Recently, unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) technology has been growing rapidly and widely used in civil applications, such as aerial mapping, precise agriculture, power line patrolling. However, most of high precision position and orientation systems (POS) are still heavy and expensive, so they are still unpractical to be equipped on UAV. In this study, we investigated the feasibility of providing precise navigation and positioning service for UAV with single frequency GPS/BDS receiver. The challenges of precise positioning for UAV with low cost receivers are threefold: (1) signal captured with low cost receivers and antennas has poorer quality and interference immunity. (2) UAV moves fast and flexible. (3) UAV navigation requires real time and high reliable positioning solution. GPS-based single frequency can provide centimeter accuracy positioning in friendly environments, while its availability and reliability is difficult to meet the requirement. In this study, we introduced GPS/BDS combined RTK positioning, which increases the redundancy number and improved the precision and reliability of float solution. Meanwhile, we analyzed the signal and antenna gain characteristics of low cost receiver and antenna, and established a refined stochastic model for GPS and BDS observations. We also made use of the Doppler observations to improve the kinematic model and quality control, which significantly improves the success rate of carrier phase ambiguity resolution in single frequency RTK case. In order to validate the performance of our algorithm, we carried out in-flight tests with Tersus single frequency GPS/BDS receiver and analyzed the test results. The results indicate that our RTK algorithm can improve the fix rate of ambiguity resolution from 36 % to around 60 % in challenging environments. We also validated that GPS/BDS RTK has better availability and reliability than GPS stand-alone RTK.

The IoT will host a large number of co-existing cyber-physical applications. Continuous change, application interference, environment dynamics and uncertainty lead to complex effects which must be controlled to give performance and application guarantees. Application and platform self-configuration and self-awareness are one paradigm to approach this challenge. They can leverage context knowledge to control platform and application functions and their interaction. They could play a dominant role in large scale cyber-physical systems and systems-of-systems, simply because no person can oversee the whole system functionality and dynamics. IoT adds a new dimension because internet based services will increasingly be used in such system functions. Autonomous vehicles accessing cloud services for efficiency and comfort as well as to reach the required level of safety and security are an example. Such vehicle platforms will communicate with a service infrastructure that must be reliable and highly responsive. Automated continuous self-configuration of data storage might be a good basis for such services up to the point where the different self-x strategies might affect each other, in a positive or negative form. This paper contains three contributions from different domains representing the current status of self-aware systems as they will meet in the internet-of-Things and closes with a short discussion of upcoming challenges.

Distributed network-induced delays of wireless networked control systems with the multi-channel may deteriorate the performance of control systems, and noise interference of system may also lead to the control quality dropping. To solve these problems, a wireless networked control strategy based on H 2 /H ∞ filtering is proposed. Firstly, a directed graph is used to describe the communication topology of the distributed sensor nodes, and different Markov chains are employed to describe the characters of network-induced delays in each wireless channel. To improve the precision of the controlled inputs, a H 2 /H ∞ filter is then designed to reduce noise interference of the output signals of the sensors, and a closed-feedback filtering and control system model is further proposed. Moreover, for the given maximum network-induced delays in each wireless channel, the stochastic stability of the closed-feedback filtering and control system is presented and a prescribed H 2 /H ∞ performance is also achieved, and the relationships between the stochastic stability criteria, the network-induced delays, the filtering parameters and the controller gain are established. Finally, simulation results confirm the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed method.

In this paper, we introduce a new Active Queue Management (AQM) paradigm and a corresponding congestion control mechanism for a novel video-streaming framework. We call the proposed framework Erasable Packets within internet Queues (EPIQ). EPIQ exhibits best-effort complexity within the network, similar to the networking complexity of HTTP-based Adaptive Streaming (HAS); yet EPIQ can provide optimal quality-of-experience performance similar to the performance of high-complexity multi-queue solutions. EPIQ exploits the inherent multi-priority nature of video to deliver optimal quality-of-experience without requiring any additional overhead in terms of redundant packets or network resources such as multiple queues and without the need to maintain state information about flows. The novelty of EPIQ is rooted in its packetization. Each EPIQ packet consists of multiple segments, and where each segment carries different priority video content. Under congestion, a network router can simply partially erase only small portions of the EPIQ packets instead of dropping complete packets. We show through an analytical model and extensive simulations that this new paradigm in video streaming provides significant improvements over HAS solutions in terms of quality-of-experience metrics. These significant improvements are achieved while maintaining fairness, stability, and low-complexity within the network.

Constrained Application Protocol (CoAP) was developed to support the communication between resource constrained nodes via low-power links. As an internet protocol, CoAP needs congestion control primarily to stabilize the networking operation. In this paper we propose a new round trip time based adaptive congestion control scheme, which improves CoAP by utilizing the retransmission count information in estimating the retransmission timeout. An experiment is conducted based on Californium CoAP framework and real devices. It shows that the proposed scheme significantly improves CoAP in terms of throughput and rate of successful transaction.

The internet of things (IoT) is the interconnection of physical objects with the internet network using existing technologies and communication protocols. The speed up and massive uses of this network's type in a multitude domain, from large industrial applications to small every day's uses, raises new serious problematic related to security. Indeed, recent reports on cyber security highlighted the internet of things' vulnerability, and the risks continue to increase exponentially, especially with the deployment of intelligent networks [1]. These objects connected to the internet network will create a lot of new attack attempts and present a considerable danger for the integrity of data. To avoid disastrous consequences, security approaches must take place to ensure a set of criteria, namely: resistance to attack, data authenticity, access control and user privacy [2]. Due to limited IoT capacities as a CPU, memory, bandwidth and the energy, a new kind of protocols and concepts have been developed and/or improved to satisfy the specific quality of service of this network's type. Among these protocols we find “Message Queue Telemetry Transport” (MQTT). It is an open source protocol created by IBM that uses the Publish/Subscribe pattern and requires only a small bandwidth. In this work, we propose a new approach of secured communication based on the MQTT protocol. Indeed, in an unsecured network, we use standard techniques and algorithms of cryptography such as digital signatures, hash functions and the RSA algorithm to secure communications, data and keys exchanges in an IoT network.

Communications in Wireless Sensor networks (WSNs) are affected by dynamic environments, variable signal fluctuations and interference. Thus, prompt actions are necessary to achieve dependable communications and meet quality of service requirements. To this end, the reactive algorithms used in literature and standards, both centralized and distributed ones, are too slow and prone to cascading failures, instability and sub-optimality. We explore the predictive power of machine learning to better exploit the local information available in the WSN nodes and make sense of global trends. We aim at predicting the configuration values that lead to network stability. In this work, we adopt the Q-learning algorithm to train WSNs to proactively start adapting in face of changing network conditions, acting on the available transmission power levels. Our aim is to prove that smart nodes lead to better network performance with the aid of simple machine learning.

The connection of control and process networks to company infrastructures and the internet, besides offering undeniable advantages, also imposes the adoption of adequate security countermeasures. Specialized firewalls, able to recognize and inspect traffic concerning peculiar communication protocols such as Modbus, which are commonly adopted in industrial applications, are beginning to spread on the market. However, several industrial control systems (ICSs) must satisfy critical performance and timing requirements and the impact of introducing such a kind of devices in an existing network should be evaluated carefully. In this paper we present a simple approach based on ordinary equipment and open source software, which can help system designers and managers to get approximate but useful information about effects produced by including an industrial firewall in their system. The proposed technique, though quite simple, has the advantage of circumventing the need of ad-hoc measurement instrumentation and can be used also by non-experts, virtually with little or no effort, to get rough guess indications about the extent the firewall insertion in the network can be tolerated.
