Due to the ever-increasing computational demand of automotive applications, and in particular autonomous driving capabilities, the automotive industry and its suppliers are starting to adopt parallel and heterogeneous embedded computing platforms. However, C and C++, the currently dominating programming languages in this industry, do not provide sufficient mechanisms to fully exploit such platforms. As a result, vendors have begun to employ true parallel programming models such as OpenMP, CUDA or OpenCL. In this work, we report on a benchmark suite developed specifically to investigate the applicability of established parallel programming models to automotive workloads on heterogeneous platforms.

Heterogeneous multiprocessor platforms are becoming widespread in the embedded system domain, mainly for the opportunity to improve timing performance and to minimize energy/power consumption and costs. Therefore, when using such platforms, it is important to adopt a Design Space Exploration (DSE) strategy that considers compromises among different objectives. Existing DSE approaches are generally based on evolutionary algorithms to solve Multi-Objective Optimization Problems (MOOPs) by minimizing a linear combination of weighted cost functions (i.e., Weighted Sum Method, WSM). In this way, the main issues are related to reduce timing execution while trying to improve the evolutionary algorithm performance, introducing strategies that attempt to bring better solutions. Code parallelization is one of the most used approaches in this field, but no standard methods have been released since different aspects could affect the performance. This approach leads to exploit parallel and distributed processing elements in order to implement evolutionary algorithms. In the latter case, if we consider genetic algorithms, it is possible to talk about Parallel Genetic Algorithms (PGA). Considering this context, this paper focuses on DSE for heterogeneous multi-processor embedded systems and introduces an improvement that reduces execution time using parallel programming languages (i.e., OpenMP) inside the main genetic algorithm approach, while trying to lead to better partitioning solutions. The descriptions of the adopted DSE activities and the OpenMP implementation, validated by means of a case study, represent the core of the paper. © 2020 Association for Computing Machinery.

In this paper, we have discussed compiler optimization on different multicore processor architecture. General architecture of an optimizing compiler has been prescribed, Structure of multicore processor is elaborated with the help of architectural components. GCC (GNU Compiler Collection) and ICC two compilers are being observed for two languages i.e. C/C++.Optimization level for both of these compilers i.e. ICC and GCC are discussed on multiple flags. Their represent goal to compare the impact of various compiler optimizations on program performance using two compiler i.e. GNU C Compiler and ICC Compiler. Different techniques like Low-level SIMD intrinsic, Code scheduling, PARSEC Benchmarks, OOP for embedded system and compiler optimization and multi-objectives scheduling algorithm based on cuckoo optimization are observed and their objectives and limitations are highlighted as state of art.

JavaScript is one of the mainstream programming languages for client-side programming, server-side programming, and even embedded systems. Various JavaScript engines developed and maintained in diverse fields must conform to the syntax and semantics described in ECMAScript, the standard specification of JavaScript. Since an incorrect description in ECMAScript can lead to wrong JavaScript engine implementations, checking the correctness of ECMAScript is critical and essential. However, all the specification updates are currently manually reviewed by the Ecma Technical Committee 39 (TC39) without any automated tools. Moreover, in late 2014, the committee announced the yearly release cadence and open development process of ECMAScript to quickly adapt to evolving development environments. Because of such frequent updates, checking the correctness of ECMAScript becomes more labor-intensive and *** alleviate the problem, we propose JSTAR, a JavaScript Specification Type Analyzer using Refinement. It is the first tool that performs type analysis on JavaScript specifications and detects specification bugs using a bug detector. For a given specification, JSTAR first compiles each abstract algorithm written in a structured natural language to a corresponding function in IR ES , an untyped intermediate representation for ECMAScript. Then, it performs type analysis for compiled functions with specification types defined in ECMAScript. Based on the result of type analysis, JSTAR detects specification bugs using a bug detector consisting of four checkers. To increase the precision of the type analysis, we present condition-based refinement for type analysis, which prunes out infeasible abstract states using conditions of assertions and branches. We evaluated JSTAR with all 864 versions in the official ECMAScript repository for the recent three years from 2018 to 2021. Before starting a new project or repairing an existed project, embedded system developers face to the selection problem between a huge amount of different tools (e.g., development methods, architectural styles or programming languages). Because of the problem complexity usually, a developer makes a decision based on fashion or last experience unless real project needs. That approach may significantly reduce a development efficient or ruin the project. In the article, the authors analyzed the selection problem for architectural design tools and purposed a method of comparative analysis based on criteria with partially ordered estimates. The method application demonstrated on comparing of architectural style for multilevel embedded system design.

Estimation of Worst Case Execution Times (WCETs) of software functions in a real-time embedded system is fundamentally important in verifying its timing behaviour. Many existing WCET analysis tools and benchmarks, based on static WCET analysis methods, are limited to analyse software functions that conform to specific programming languages and libraries. As a consequence, these tools do not support WCET estimation of software functions in legacy industrial systems that do not conform to those languages and libraries. This paper advocates the use of a statistical method based on extreme value theory for estimating WCETs of software functions in such legacy industrial embedded systems. The main advantage of this method is that it is agnostic of the languages and libraries that are used to implement the software functions. In order to provide a proof of concept, the paper incorporates an industrial use case and applies the method to estimate WCETs of its software functions. The paper also presents an extensive comparative evaluation of the statistical method and an established static analysis tool for estimating WCETs that utilises high-level flow analysis.

Model Based Software Engineering (MBSE) consists in applying Model-Based Engineering principles - mostly abstraction and automation - to software engineering practices. As concluded by several empirical studies during the past 10 years, applying MBSE methodology is no more a question and we shall now wonder how to do it rather than if we should. One of the major criticisms of MBSE remains about the available tooling to apply its methodology. Multiple surveys show that the usability of tools and the lack of skills from the user are two key barriers that still slow down the spread of the MBSE approach. In the meantime, these surveys also highlight the difficulties software engineers often encounter during the modeling activity itself, regardless of the tool. Indeed, complex operations such as problem-to-model mapping, consistency checking or error identification are still often manually performed by humans. The recent advances in AIs introduced new software-based systems able to interact with their users to help them in their daily life. The purpose of this PhD is to investigate how such AIs (which we will call software assistants) could help software engineers to face the complexity of software modeling. Interactions between software assistants and users of MBSE tools will be the bulk of this work. We plan to implement software assistants and provide them an access to a high-quality knowledge repository on models that we will build to study these interactions. Based on these studies, we hope to contribute laying the foundations of interactions with software assistants. The end result will feature a knowledge repository and a Software Assistant acting together to help users modeling by catering for new ideas, recommendations and help. This work will also provide frameworks to create knowledge repositories and IDE-embedded software assistants.

Today, much attention is paid to the research and development of application-specific instruction set processors (ASIPs). The architecture of such processors is focused on their application and the command systems differ from each other, therefore each architecture requires its own set of developer tools like a compiler, debugger, linker, etc. The program code optimization for each ASIP also has its own specifics. At the same time, compiler development should be as fast and technologically advanced as possible in order to minimize the application delivery time (time-to-market), and make the compiled program code as reliable as possible. In this work, a comparative analysis of approaches to the retargetable compiler design is performed. The analysis of languages for the description of target platforms, which are used for automatic developer tools generation, is performed. A data-driven approach to the development of compilers, which minimizes the costs of providing support for a set of target architectures, is proposed. The possibility of using this approach for a co-design compiler and an ASIP processor or an embedded system has been substantiated. © SGEM 2019.

Automated build systems are routinely used by software engineers to minimize the number of objects that need to be recompiled after incremental changes to the source files of a project. In order to achieve efficient and correct builds, developers must provide the build tools with dependency information between the files and modules of a project, usually expressed in a macro language specific to each build tool. Most build systems offer good support for well-known languages and compilers, but as projects grow larger, engineers tend to include source files generated using custom tools. In order to guarantee correctness, the authors of these tools are responsible for enumerating all the files whose contents an output depends on. Unfortunately, this is a tedious process and not all dependencies are captured in practice, which leads to incorrect builds. We automatically uncover such missing dependencies through a novel method that we call build fuzzing. The correctness of build definitions is verified by modifying files in a project, triggering incremental builds and comparing the set of changed files to the set of expected changes. These sets are determined using a dependency graph inferred by tracing the system calls executed during a clean build. We evaluate our method by exhaustively testing build rules of open-source projects, uncovering issues leading to race conditions and faulty builds in 30 of them. We provide a discussion of the bugs we detect, identifying anti-patterns in the use of the macro languages. We fix some of the issues in projects where the features of build systems allow a clean solution.
