Synchronisation for multi-network with two types of inter-network coupling faults: pinning control effects

Investigation of simultaneous occurrence of permanent and/or recoverable faults of coupled nodes within different networks in a larger network structure is an appealing timely research topic. For the modelling of such a multi-network structure, the coupling terms in the same network and the coupling terms among different networks are described separately in order to explain clearly the multi-network feature here. The dimension-transformation matrix is used to deal with the mismatched dimensions of nodes in the different networks. Then a synchronisation controller is designed from the underlying theory of pinning control schemes. Furthermore, following the ideas of Lyapunov stability theory, a sufficient stability condition under the pinning control is derived which guarantees nodes in the same network synchronisation. Computer simulation results for a numerical case study of three coupled networks with nodes that possess rather complex non-linear dynamics demonstrate that the proposed controllers can enforce synchronisation despite different types of faults being occurred in the multi-network. It is also shown that the specific pinning control scheme is more effective than the random pinning.

Majority of widely used machine learning models are vulnerable to adversarial attacks, which are slight modifications of inputs that change the model's prediction with high confidence. The detection of such attacks and adversarial samples is still an open problem. In this work, we continue exploration of a novel method for adversarial image detection by means of linear algebra approach. The method is built on a comparison of distances to the centroids for a given point and its neighbours. The method of adversarial examples detection is considered theoretically, and the numerical experiments are done to illustrate the approach. A number of methods of adversarial examples generation are considered. It is shown, that the method is prone to error in case of certain adversarial attacks and training sets.

Block Krylov subspace methods (KSMs) comprise building blocks in many state-of-the-art solvers for large-scale matrix equations as they arise, for example, from the discretization of partial differential equations. While extended and rational block Krylov subspace methods provide a major reduction in iteration counts over polynomial block KSMs, they also require reliable solvers for the coefficient matrices, and these solvers are often iterative methods themselves. It is not hard to devise scenarios in which the available memory, and consequently the dimension of the Krylov subspace, is limited. In such scenarios for linear systems and eigenvalue problems, restarting is a well-explored technique for mitigating memory constraints. In this work, such restarting techniques are applied to polynomial KSMs for matrix equations with a compression step to control the growing rank of the residual. An error analysis is also performed, leading to heuristics for dynamically adjusting the basis size in each restart cycle. A panel of numerical experiments demonstrates the effectiveness of the new method with respect to extended block KSMs.

Properties of eventually positive linear input-output systems

In this study, the author considers systems with trajectories originating in the non-negative orthant and becoming non-negative after some finite time transient. These systems are called eventually positive and the results are based on recent theoretical developments in linear algebra. The author considers dynamical systems (i.e. fully observable systems with no inputs), for which they compute forward-invariant cones and Lyapunov functions. They then extend the notion of eventually positive systems to the input-output system case. The extension is performed in such a manner, that some valuable properties of classical internally positive input-output systems are preserved. For example, their induced norms can be computed using linear programming and the energy functions have non-negative derivatives. The author illustrates the theoretical results on numerical examples.

Slosh has been one of the main concerns for transportation vehicles, specifically with partially filled tanks trucks. The liquid movement due to changes of vehicle velocity magnitude and direction as well as external excitation can be the source of instability problems in trucks and passenger vehicles. Due to intrinsic characteristics, the natural frequency of sloshing is similar to the human input frequency, wind excitation and road displacement. Thus, managing and controlling the vehicle-tank system dynamics is required to maintain the desired safety standards. In this paper a numerical study of a quarter car vehicle-tank model is conducted by investigating motion of a linear pendulum model without baffles. A numerical analyses of the roll dynamics, bifurcation diagram and 0–1 test, is performed and a controller based upon the State-Dependent Riccati Equation method controlling the movement on the damper. The results demonstrate hat the pendulum model adequately maps the fluid behavior in the tank. Nevertheless, due to low dissipation of slosh motion, around the natural frequency the displacement increases significantly and the vehicle motion can cause loss of control and roll over. In this case, the passive control is unable to significantly reduce the slosh. Nevertheless, it significantly reduce the pendulum motion and avoids the overturn and improving the driviblility and safety. © Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2021.

Perfect elasticity is not achievable in real-life situation, so spring stiffness is not perfectly constant. In this paper, we study the effect of modifying non-linear stiffness terms while keeping the nominal stiffness constant. We introduce three methods to design and tune linear and nonlinear elastic behavior in the context of compliant mechanisms and we present mechanical realizations. These designs are modeled using Euler-Bernoulli beam theory. numerical simulation and experimental measurement show a good match with the theoretical model. We then present applications of our stiffness tuning methods to mechanical metamaterials, mechanical resonators, and mechanical computation. Copyright © 2020 ASME.

With the development of Internet of Things (IoT), wireless communication networks and Artificial Intelligence (AI), more and more real-time applications such as online games and autonomous driving have emerged. However, due to limited computing power and battery capacity, it has become increasingly difficult for local user devices to take on the full range of computing tasks under tight timing constraints. The emerging Mobile Edge Computing (MEC) technology is widely considered to be an important technology for achieving ultra-low latency. However, most of the existing work is focused on non-splittable computation tasks. In fact, data partitioning-oriented applications can be split into multiple subtasks for parallel processing. In this paper, we study the partial computation offloading of multiple detachable tasks in MEC networks, focusing on minimizing the total user device latency in the multi-MEC multi-user scenarios. Considering the dynamic partitioning of tasks, we adopt the barrel theory to construct a linear system of equations to find the optimal solutions and propose an approach for distributed computation offloading based on numerical methods. The simulation results show that the proposed algorithm can reduce the average user device latency by 31 % compared with the binary offloading method.

This work proposes a kinematic modelling and a non-linear kinematic controller for an autonomous aerial mobile manipulator robot that generates velocity commands for trajectory tracking problem. The kinematic modelling is considered using a hexarotor system and robotic arm. The stability and robustness of the entire control system are tested by this method. Finally, the experiment results are presented and discussed, and validate the proposed controller.

Kronecker weights for instability analysis of Markov jump linear systems

In this study, the authors analyse the instability of continuous-time Markov jump linear systems. Although there exist several effective criteria for the stability of Markov jump linear systems, there is a lack of methodologies for verifying their instability. In this study, they present a novel criterion for the exponential mean instability of Markov jump linear systems. The main tool of the authors' analysis is an auxiliary Markov jump linear system, which results from taking the Kronecker products of the given system matrices and a set of appropriate matrix weights. They show that the problem of finding matrix weights for tighter instability analysis can be transformed into the spectral optimisation problem on an affine matrix family, which can be efficiently solved by gradient-based non-smooth optimisation algorithms. They confirm the effectiveness of the proposed methods by numerical examples.

Elliptic tori in FPU non-linear chains with a small number of nodes

We revisit an algorithm constructing elliptic tori, that was originally designed for applications to planetary hamiltonian systems. The scheme is adapted to properly work with models of chains of N + 1 particles interacting via anharmonic potentials, thus covering also the case of FPU chains. After having preliminarily settled the Hamiltonian in a suitable way, we perform a sequence of canonical transformations removing the undesired perturbative terms by an iterative procedure. This is done by using the Lie series approach, that is explicitly implemented in a programming code with the help of a software package, which is especially designed for computer algebra manipulations. In the cases of FPU chains with N = 4 , 8 , we successfully apply our new algorithm to the construction of elliptic tori for wide sets of the parameter ruling the size of the perturbation, i.e., the total energy of the system. Moreover, we explore the stability regions surrounding 1D elliptic tori. We compare our semi-analytical results with those provided by numerical explorations of the FPU-model dynamics, where the latter ones are obtained by using techniques based on the so called frequency analysis. We find that our procedure works up to values of the total energy that are of the same order of magnitude with respect to the maximal ones, for which elliptic tori are detected by numerical methods. ? 2021 Elsevier B.V.
