Synchronisation of chaotic neural networks with unknown parameters and random time-varying delays based on adaptive sampled-data control and parameter identification

This study investigates the synchronisation problem of chaotic neural networks with unknown parameters and random time-varying delays. By introducing a stochastic variable with Bernoulli distribution, the neural networks with random time-varying delays is transformed into one with deterministic varying delays and stochastic parameters. A simple and robust adaptive sampled-data controller is designed such that the response system can be synchronised with a drive system with unknown parameters by using suitable parameter identification and the Lyapunov stability theory. The proposed synchronisation criteria are easily verified and do not need to solve any linear matrix inequality. numerical simulations are carried out to demonstrate the effectiveness of the established synchronisation laws.

Actuator fault estimation using direct reconstruction approach for linear multivariable systems

This study considers the application of a continuous non-linear fault estimation system to reconstruct the state vector and actuator faults for multivariable linear systems, in which the effects of faults are modelled as additive unknown inputs. To estimate the state, a continuous function is introduced to compensate the effects of fault and disturbance. It is shown that if the state reconstruction error converges to zero asymptotically, then the continuous function can be used as a reconstruction of fault and disturbance. The feasibility of the design scheme can be checked by solving a linear matrix inequality. Also, the design scheme does not rely on any particular canonical form of the model, so coordinate transformation is not necessary. Using the similar approach, a disturbance decoupled fault reconstruction scheme is also proposed. Finally, a design example is given and the reconstruction of both multiplicative fault and additive disturbance are simulated.

In this study, the stability analysis and synthesis problems for continuous Markov jump linear systems with partly known transition probabilities are investigated. The partly known transition probabilities cover the cases that some elements are known, some are unknown with known lower and upper bounds and some are completely unknown. By making full use of the continuous transition probability matrix property, that is, the sum of transition probabilities is 0 for each row, a new method for the analysis and synthesis is presented in terms of solvability of a set of linear matrix inequalities. Compared to the existing results in the literature, it is shown that the proposed method is more effective to deal with the considered transition probabilities. numerical examples are given to show the validity of the proposed method.

Robust H₂ control applied to boost converters: design, experimental validation and performance analysis

This study proposes a design procedure and experimental validation for a robust H-2 state feedback controller applied to a DC-DC boost converter modelled as a linear system affected by time-varying parameters lying in known intervals. The parameters considered as time-varying are the input voltage, the load resistance and the operating point duty cycle. A polytopic representation of the system is derived and the controller is designed by means of a convex optimisation problem based on linear matrix inequalities. The conventional H-2 controller is extended to cope with alpha-stability and robust linear quadratic regulator design, providing different strategies to trade-off the magnitude of the control gains and the response of the closed-loop system. Tight correspondences between numerical simulations and the experimental results prove the viability of the application of this technique for this kind of plant. Finally, a robust performance analysis illustrates the capacity of the closed-loop system to reject energy bounded disturbances, with interpretation for the cases of time-varying and time-invariant parameters.

Consensus of multi-agent systems: a simultaneous stabilisation approach

This study considers the state consensus problem of multi-agent systems by virtue of novel simultaneous stabilisation techniques, where the distributed controller is proposed using relative outputs of the agents. A new consensus analysis condition is derived by studying the corresponding simultaneous stabilisation problem. Based on the analysis result, a necessary and sufficient condition is then established to ensure the consensus achievement of multi-agent systems, where the controller gain matrix is parameterised by a positive definite matrix, which is independent of the Lyapunov matrices. Iterative approaches are also developed to solve the design conditions, and to optimise the initial values with the solvability of the original problem improved. Further results are obtained for the dynamic output-feedback case. Finally, a numerical example is given to show the effectiveness of the obtained results.

This brief concerns the stabilisation problem for a class of slowly switched positive linear systems in discrete-time context. The average dwell-time switching associated with the corresponding state-feedback controllers is designed to stabilise the closed-loop systems and keep the states non-negative. The developed conditions are formulated as linear matrix inequalities, which can be directly used for controller synthesis and switching designing. Finally, a numerical example is presented to show the feasibility of the obtained theoretical results.

Robust controller with state-parameter estimation for uncertain networked control system

This study presents the design of an adaptive Kalman filter for networked systems involving random 'sensor delays, missing measurements and packet dropouts'. Two different adaptive filters are considered to estimate unknown parameter vector associated with the system matrices and subsequently the estimation of state and parameters of the system based on the minimisation of square of the output prediction error is adopted in bootstrap manner. An estimator-based robust controller design has been proposed for asymptotic stability of the system whose parameters can vary within a known bound. The effectiveness of the designed algorithms is tested through a numerical example under different cases.

Dynamic compound shape control of robot swarm

This study presents a dynamic compound shape control for a swarm of robots. A new definition of dynamic potential energy associated with the desired compound shape, which is the union of various basic shapes, is presented. Each basic shape is specified by the corresponding inequality functions. With this new definition, a variety of interesting compound shapes, which are difficult to form by the existing methods, can be easily formed. The swarm can also change their shape and size during the course of movement with the aid of a time-varying transformation matrix. A Lyapunov-like function is presented for stability analysis of the swarm systems. Simulation results are presented to illustrate the performance of the proposed method.

On Kaczmarz's projection iteration as a direct solver for linear least squares problems

In this paper we construct and theoretically analyze a class of direct projection algorithms for the numerical solution of linear least squares problems. These algorithms are obtained by adding supplementary directions for projection, constructed as linear combinations of the initial system rows and columns, in Kaczmarz and Extended Kaczmarz iterative methods. The above ideas are extended to the block row and column versions of the previously mentioned methods. The developed algorithms are then compared with other direct projection-based methods by the application to problems arising in multibody elasticity. (C) 2011 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Robust control of observer-based sampled-data systems: digital redesign approach

This study proposes the digital redesign (DR) method for an observer-based output-feedback control in the presence of parametric uncertainties. The term DR is to convert an existing analogue control into an equivalent digital one in the sense of state-matching. The DR problem can be reduced to find the digital gains minimising the norm distance between the closed-loop states of the analogue and digital control. The main feature of the proposed DR is that the state estimation error in the plant dynamics is considered for the state-matching condition. Also, by handling the parametric uncertainties in the concerned system, the robust stability is well guaranteed in the proposed DR procedure. Its constructive conditions are expressed as the linear matrix inequalities A numerical example has been demonstrated to visualise the feasibility of the proposed methodology.
