Most methods for solving linear systems Ax=b are founded on the ability to split up the matrix A in the form of a product A=G·R with G belonging to a subgroup of the general linear group Gl(n,R) and R being a regular upper triangular matrix. In the same way, the calculation of the eigenvalues of a matrix by the use of an algorithm of the Rutishauser type is based on a G·Rdecomposition for the matrix. Our aim in this article will be to show the importance of the notion of splitting up, to set out the conditions under which it may be used and to show how it enables us to generate new algorithms.

During the past decade the interaction between control theory and linearalgebra has been ever increasing, giving rise to new results in both areas. As a natural outflow of this research, this book presents information on this interdisciplinary area. The cross-fertilization between control and linearalgebra can be found in subfields such as numericallinearalgebra, Canonical Forms, Ring-theoretic methods, Matrix theory, and Robust Control. This book's editors were challenged to present the latest results in these areas and to find points of common interest. This volume reflects very nicely the interaction: the range of topics seems very wide indeed, but the basic problems and techniques are always closely connected. And the common denominator in all of this is, of course, linearalgebra.;This book is suitable for both mathematicians and students.

This book gathers selected, peer-reviewed contributions presented at the Fifth International conference on numerical Analysis and Optimization (NAO-V), which was held at Sultan Qaboos University, Oman, on January 6-9, 2020. Each chapter reports on developments in key fields, such as numerical analysis, numerical optimization, numericallinearalgebra, numerical differential equations, optimal control, approximation theory, applied mathematics, derivative-free optimization methods, programming models, and challenging applications that frequently arise in statistics, econometrics, finance, physics, medicine, biology, engineering and industry.;Many real-world, complex problems can be formulated as optimization tasks, and can be characterized further as large scale, unconstrained, constrained, non-convex, nondifferentiable or discontinuous, and therefore require adequate computational methods, algorithms and software tools. These same tools are often employed by researchers working in current IT hot topics, such as big data, optimization and other complex numerical algorithms in the cloud, devising special techniques for supercomputing systems. This interdisciplinary view permeates the work included in this volume.;The NAO conference series is held every three years at Sultan Qaboos University, with the aim of bringing together a group of international experts and presenting novel and advanced applications to facilitate interdisciplinary studies among pure scientific and applied knowledge. It is a venue where prominent scientists gather to share innovative ideas and know-how relating to new scientific methodologies, to promote scientific exchange, to discuss possible future cooperations, and to promote the mobility of local and young researchers.

This book constitutes a carefully arranged selection of revised full papers chosen from the presentations given at the Second International conference on Vector and Parallel Processing - Systems and applications, VECPAR'96, held in Porto, Portugal, in September 1996.;Besides 10 invited papers by internationally leading experts, 17 papers were accepted from the submitted conference papers for inclusion in this documentation following a second round of refereeing. A broad spectrum of topics and applications for which parallelism contributes to progress is covered, among them parallel linearalgebra, computational fluid dynamics, data parallelism, implementational issues, optimization, finite element computations, simulation, and visualisation.

The subject of this book is the solution of polynomial equations, that is, s- tems of (generally) non-linearalgebraic equations. This study is at the heart of several areas of mathematics and its applications. It has provided the - tivation for advances in di?erent branches of mathematics such as algebra, geometry, topology, and numerical analysis. In recent years, an explosive - velopment of algorithms and software has made it possible to solve many problems which had been intractable up to then and greatly expanded the areas of applications to include robotics, machine vision, signal processing, structural molecular biology, computer-aided design and geometric modelling, as well as certain areas of statistics, optimization and game theory, and b- logical networks. At the same time, symbolic computation has proved to be an invaluable tool for experimentation and conjecture in pure mathematics. As a consequence, the interest in e?ective algebraic geometry and computer algebrahasextendedwellbeyonditsoriginalconstituencyofpureandapplied mathematicians and computer scientists, to encompass many other scientists and engineers. While the core of the subject remains algebraic geometry, it also calls upon many other aspects of mathematics and theoretical computer science, ranging from numericalmethods, di?erential equations and number theory to discrete geometry, combinatorics and complexity theory. Thegoalofthisbookistoprovideageneralintroduction tomodernma- ematical aspects in computing with multivariate polynomials and in solving algebraic systems.

Monte Carlo methods are numericalmethods based on random sampling and quasi-Monte Carlo methods are their deterministic versions. This volume contains the refereed proceedings of the Second International conference on Monte Carlo and Quasi-Monte Carlo methods in Scientific Computing which was held at the University of Salzburg (Austria) from July 9--12, 1996. The conference was a forum for recent progress in the theory and the applications of these methods. The topics covered in this volume range from theoretical issues in Monte Carlo and simulation methods, low-discrepancy point sets and sequences, lattice rules, and pseudorandom number generation to applications such as numerical integration, numericallinearalgebra, integral equations, binary search, global optimization, computational physics, mathematical finance, and computer graphics. These proceedings will be of interest to graduate students and researchers in Monte Carlo and quasi-Monte Carlo methods, to numerical analysts, and to practitioners of simulation methods.
