A constitutive framework for modelling elastomers, soft tissues and liquid crystal elastomers

This manuscript presents a constitutive modelling framework designed to characterize a wide range of soft materials. The framework uses an exponential-power law to develop a six-parameter generic hyperelastic potential function, while a two-parameter viscous dissipation function is formulated to address strain-rate sensitive materials. Independent validations of the hyperelastic and visco-hyperelastic components are carried out to rigorously evaluate the model's performance. The hyperelastic component is validated in two ways: (i) through a reduced three-parameter model, specifically suited for soft elastomers exhibiting a simple S-shaped stress-strain response and (ii) through the six-parameter generic model, which accommodates more complex datasets exhibiting non-S-shaped stress-strain behaviour. The reduced three-parameter model effectively captures the mechanical behaviour of soft elastomers, while the six-parameter hyperelastic framework describes the intricate mechanical responses of complex materials, such as soft elastomers with non-S-shaped responses, human brain tissue, porcine liver tissue and liquid crystal elastomers (LCEs). Apart from hyperelastic fitting the viscoelastic component is validated using strain-rate sensitive soft-tissue data where the two-parameter viscous dissipation function accurately models the strain-rate sensitive behaviour of soft tissues.

Here, we considered Holling functional responses, a core concept in population dynamics, and discussed their potential interpretation in the context of social epidemiology. Then, we assessed which Holling functional response best represents the vaccination behaviour of individuals when such a behaviour is influenced by information and rumours about the disease. In particular, we used the Holling functionals to represent the information-dependent vaccination rate in a socio-epidemiological model for meningococcal meningitis. As a field case test, we estimated the information-related parameters by using official data from a meningitis outbreak in Nigeria and numerically assessed the impact of the functionals on the solutions of the model. We observed significant inaccuracies on parameter estimates when either Holling type I or Holling type III functional were used. On the contrary, when the Holling type II functional was employed, epidemiological data were well reproduced, and reasonable values of the information parameters were obtained. Given the socio-epidemiological interpretation of the Holling type II functional, this means that the rate at which susceptible individuals come into contact with information may be assumed to be constant and that the time needed to handle the available information cannot be neglected. © 2025 the author(s)

In the context of designing of customized products, ensuring the verification of requirements and stakeholder needs in an efficient and cost-effective manner poses significant challenges. This paper proposes a Virtual Prototyping approach, integrating Computer-Aided Design and multibody modelling, to leverage their respective advantages. The presented case study involves the integration of two pre-existing robots, a cobot and an Autonomous Mobile Robot, to realize an Autonomous Mobile Cobot tailored to the specific needs of a manufacturing industry. Through Virtual Prototyping approach, part of the requirements, including spatial and assembly constraint, are verified by means of CAD, while interaction and behavioural requirements are verified through multibody modelling and simulation. This work highlights the efficacy of Virtual Prototyping in achieving comprehensive design verification for tailored products. By simulating the behaviour and performance of the designed system before physical implementation, Virtual Prototyping reduces the time and costs associated with traditional trial-and-error methods. Moreover, it enables a more thorough exploration of design alternatives and optimization strategies, ultimately improving the efficiency and effectiveness of the design process. This integrated approach showcases the potential of digital tools to enhance the development of complex industrial systems, paving the way for tailored solutions to meet evolving market demands.

For developing preordain capability in health care, it is important to understand the healthcare system. To achieve this demeanour, it is important to model the system mathematically and define the automata of the system. It is serendipitous that quantitative analysis of the major healthcare system can be done using the mathematical model of the healthcare system. This review paper discusses a few of the mathematical models. The paper is categorized into five sections. Section 1 discusses the pioneer work on the mathematical modelling of the heart which laid the foundation stone for the remaining works including model- and automata-based analysis of the heart and pacemaker. The second section discusses the parameters associated with the modelling of the heart and further extends onto the mathematical modelling which is followed by the aberrant heart conditions and use of pacemaker to control the conditions. The section further discusses one of the major concerns of health, i.e., increasing rate of cancer globally. Referring to the report of Global Cancer Observatory (GCO), an International Cancer Research Agency (WHO), there are 36 types of cancer reported from 185 countries worldwide, in 2020 which has also been published in American Cancer Society Journal. The proliferating rate of cancer needs to be correlated with the population. The third section discusses the model of change of population with the augmentation of the cancer cases. It also discusses the prediction of cancer cases in future for prescient vision and analysis and for initiating adaptive measures to control cancer. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2025.

In the Medical Reverse engineering (MRE) field, the manipulation of computed tomography (CT) scans from patients is complex, especially regarding the development of 3D anatomical models of patients' anatomy. This complexity depends on the variability of human anatomy, thus involving several challenges in the fabrication of custom biomedical devices. Low back pain is a worldwide widespread disease, whose cause is still unknown today. Indeed, a comprehensive understanding of spinal biomechanics is the goal that needs to be achieved for the evolution of surgical therapies and the design of useful devices for pathologies. Hence, Finite Element (FE) modelling of the lumbar spine is an important tool, useful for understanding the spinal physiological and pathological conditions. However, the obstacle of complex geometries is of extreme relevance. The aim of this paper is to support the existing literature to provide new models that can be used in FE modelling of the spine. Therefore, a novel model of the lumbar spine L45 with simplified intervertebral disc geometry was created and then the following model was validated using experimental data obtained from the literature about the long-term loading. This validated model based on long-term experiments will be useful in simulating the behaviour of the intervertebral disc during loading and unloading activities that alternate between night and day.

In this article, we propose a modelling and optimization of an InxGa1-xN based PV solar cell in the frequency-dynamic regime under monochromatic illumination. We first elaborated a mathematical model of the InxGa1-xN based solar cell in order to study its behaviour when subjected to monochromatic illumination in the frequency-dynamic regime. We were able to establish the electrical parameters as a function of the pulsation and wavelength of the illumination. Next, we optimized the indium proportion as a function of the nature of the illumination by simulating the efficiency of the PV solar cell, for different wavelength of the illumination and values of the pulsation, as a function of the indium fraction. This enabled us to obtain, for an illumination pulsation ranging from 0 to 106 rad. s−1, the optimum values for the indium fraction, which are xop = 0.28 and xop = 0.26 respectively for wavelengths of 0.5 µm and 0.9 µm, corresponding to optimum efficiencies of 28.7% and 26.6% respectively. Above a pulsation of 106 rad. s−1, the increase in pulsation leads to an increase in the indium fraction, resulting in a decrease in efficiency for both short and long wavelengths. © ICST Institute for Computer Sciences, Social Informatics and Telecommunications engineering 2025.

In this paper, liquid-liquid-mixer systems modelled by population balance equations are considered. As the control input / manipulated variable, the stirrer speed (and hence the energy dissipation rate) is used to control the distribution of the particle size. Three different measurement signals are considered. We investigate the observability and identifiability of the system for each measurement option and show that only in one scenario the model is observable and structurally identifiable. Further, it is shown that in this scenario, practical identifiability is generally challenging and particular care must be taken to ensure the model with identified parameter values is able to describe the dynamic behaviour of the system. The goal of object detection research is to address safety issues at industrial locations;yet, optimizing object detection efficiency while maintaining real-time capabilities is still difficult in complicated industrial settings. An unconditionally protected detector is proposed in this research to solve this issue. A bottleneck-structured residual block is used by the detector's backbone network to improve real-time performance and minimize computation. Additionally, a selective attentiveness network enhances object detection by recognizing important characteristics based on the neck structure's feature map's morphological attributes. The updated YOLOv4 model, Faster RCNN, and SSD on the COCO and KITTI datasets for object identification, is proposed in this research to address the aforementioned issues. Particularly important tasks requiring strong mathematical underpinnings are picture segmentation, object detection, and classification. Although there have been improvements, there are still issues, like the need to define terms like deep learning, machine learning, and artificial intelligence. A strong research foundation requires precise definitions and interpretations. The development of machine vision is a reflection of a bold attempt to mimic human eyesight. The ability to simulate human behaviour and perception has advanced remarkably thanks to interdisciplinary cooperation and using machine learning techniques. © 2025 IEEE.

Floods are frequent and devastating natural disaster that can result in significant damage to property and loss of human life. Accurate flood flow modelling is essential for predicting the effects of floods and developing effective flood management plans. Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) offer many advantages over the conventional method of flood flow modelling based on Saint–Venant equation which is based on many assumptions such as channel geometry and friction while the ANNs have ability to model the relationship without relying on explicit mathematical equations and assumption. For assessing the impact of climate change, accurate forecasting of rainfall is critical. ANNs have proven to be well-suited to address the varied and dynamic nature of flood data due to their ability to learn from vast datasets. Therefore, there is a need to efficaciously use ANNs for flood flow modelling due to their ability to capture complex correlations between input and output data. Keeping the above description in mind, this present study is undertaken to apply feed forward neural network (FFNN) and recurrent neural network (RNNs) to predict the discharge of the river in urban area using meteorological data ensuring minimal computational errors. The study is conducted on the Annapurna ghat gauging station of Barak River in the Cachar district near railway station of Silchar, using data collected from the water resource department of Cachar district, Silchar. The results demonstrate that both the feed forward neural network (FFNN) and recurrent neural network (RNN) models provide better accuracy than traditional regression models such as polynomial, logarithmic, and exponential regression models. Three-layer ANN structure is proposed having 2 hidden layer and single output layer having 3 nodes in input layer and 25 and 5 nodes in each hidden layers respectively with one node in output layer which is denoted as 3-25-5-1.
