A constitutive framework for modelling elastomers, soft tissues and liquid crystal elastomers

This manuscript presents a constitutive modelling framework designed to characterize a wide range of soft materials. The framework uses an exponential-power law to develop a six-parameter generic hyperelastic potential function, while a two-parameter viscous dissipation function is formulated to address strain-rate sensitive materials. Independent validations of the hyperelastic and visco-hyperelastic components are carried out to rigorously evaluate the model's performance. The hyperelastic component is validated in two ways: (i) through a reduced three-parameter model, specifically suited for soft elastomers exhibiting a simple S-shaped stress-strain response and (ii) through the six-parameter generic model, which accommodates more complex datasets exhibiting non-S-shaped stress-strain behaviour. The reduced three-parameter model effectively captures the mechanical behaviour of soft elastomers, while the six-parameter hyperelastic framework describes the intricate mechanical responses of complex materials, such as soft elastomers with non-S-shaped responses, human brain tissue, porcine liver tissue and liquid crystal elastomers (LCEs). Apart from hyperelastic fitting the viscoelastic component is validated using strain-rate sensitive soft-tissue data where the two-parameter viscous dissipation function accurately models the strain-rate sensitive behaviour of soft tissues.

Examining the effects of voluntary avoidance behaviour and policy-mediated behaviour change on the dynamics of SARS-CoV-2:A mathematical model

Background Throughout the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic,policymakers have had to navigate between recommending voluntary behaviour change and policy-driven behaviour change to mitigate the impact of the *** individuals will voluntarily engage in self-protective behaviour when there is an increasing infectious disease risk,the extent to which this occurs and its impact on an epidemic is not *** This paper describes a deterministic disease transmission model exploring the impact of individual avoidance behaviour and policy-mediated avoidance behaviour on epidemic outcomes during the second wave of SARS-CoV-2 infections in Ontario,Canada(September 1,2020 to February 28,2021).The model incorporates an information feedback function based on empirically derived behaviour data describing the degree to which avoidance behaviour changed in response to the number of new daily cases *** Voluntary avoidance behaviour alone was estimated to reduce the final attack rate by 23.1%,the total number of hospitalizations by 26.2%,and cumulative deaths by 27.5%over 6 months compared to a counterfactual scenario in which there were no interventions or avoidance behaviour.A provincial shutdown order issued on December 26,2020 was estimated to reduce the final attack rate by 66.7%,the total number of hospitalizations by 66.8%,and the total number of deaths by 67.2%compared to the counterfactual *** Given the dynamics of SARS-CoV-2 in a pre-vaccine era,individual avoidance behaviour in the absence of government action would have resulted in a moderate reduction in disease however,it would not have been sufficient to entirely mitigate transmission and the associated risk to the population in *** action during the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic in Ontario reduced infections,protected hospital capacity,and saved lives.

Here, we considered Holling functional responses, a core concept in population dynamics, and discussed their potential interpretation in the context of social epidemiology. Then, we assessed which Holling functional response best represents the vaccination behaviour of individuals when such a behaviour is influenced by information and rumours about the disease. In particular, we used the Holling functionals to represent the information-dependent vaccination rate in a socio-epidemiological model for meningococcal meningitis. As a field case test, we estimated the information-related parameters by using official data from a meningitis outbreak in Nigeria and numerically assessed the impact of the functionals on the solutions of the model. We observed significant inaccuracies on parameter estimates when either Holling type I or Holling type III functional were used. On the contrary, when the Holling type II functional was employed, epidemiological data were well reproduced, and reasonable values of the information parameters were obtained. Given the socio-epidemiological interpretation of the Holling type II functional, this means that the rate at which susceptible individuals come into contact with information may be assumed to be constant and that the time needed to handle the available information cannot be neglected. © 2025 the author(s)

Refinements to a mathematical model of human drivers' steering control incorporating driver learning are reported. State estimation and realistic sensorimotor noise sources are introduced to the driver model to better represent neural processes. It is found that the driver model exhibits the expected learning behaviour in terms of estimation and control performance. Further work is planned to validate the model experimentally.

This research aimed to assess the environmental fate and exposure risks of the LCR-AFB-like chimera derived from the PathoGelTrap solution. Part one of this study focuses on elucidating the behavioural indicators of the chimera, particularly its diffusion and sedimentation processes, crucial for understanding its fate in aquatic environments. The study reveals that the chimera diffuses instantaneously into water and exhibits slow sedimentation rates, with significant differences observed between the chimeric protein and other particles. The findings underscore the need for further research to refine models and understand the complex interactions between the chimera and aquatic systems. Part two of this study delves into environmental fate and exposure mapping to quantify human and environmental exposure pathways to the LCR-AFB-like chimera. A probabilistic mathematical model assesses partitioning coefficients, bioconcentration factors, and potential human exposure scenarios. The study concludes that PathoGelTrap liquid is environmentally safe under modelled conditions, with bioconcentration factors falling within acceptable ranges. However, potential exposure pathways, such as drinking water and recreational activities, warrant further investigation due to their sensitivity to various parameters. The findings contribute valuable insights into the safety and environmental soundness of the PathoGelTrap technology, paving the way for future risk assessment endeavours and emphasising the need for ongoing research to refine understanding and prediction of the chimera's behaviour and associated risks. © 2024, EUROSIS-ETI. The proliferation of artificial intelligence in the e-commerce industry has created new opportunities for online transaction negotiation. Traditional online dialogue systems are unsuited for this task, as they cannot negotiate and analyse user behaviour. To address the issue, this paper proposes a human-computer negotiation model that integrates the architecture of a dialogue system with automatic negotiation. The system is developed based on Q-learning and deployed on the WeChat applet platform. It can handle repetitive and diversified negotiations, negotiate with multiple parties, improve negotiation efficiency and reduce manual customer service costs. We have done extensive experiments to show that the system can negotiate efficiently with human users.

The application of recommendation technology in the field of information retrieval not only helps users to obtain useful content from the huge amount of data, but also improves the effect of search engine optimization. behavioural interventions are often used to tackle social issues that seem solvable with some form of behaviour change. However, increasing research points to behaviour change as a fundamentally internal process, raising questions on the limitations of current technologies to produce enduring changes. The gap between existential views of behaviour and existing technocentric solutions prompts us to review the dominant model of intervention and explore new directions to design technical intervention systems. In this paper, we utilise a sociotechnical systems approach to model and reframe the role of behavioural intervention systems. Our model integrates internal aspects of behaviour change into the operational concept of technological systems to discuss how technology could be better designed to adapt to the idiosyncratic needs of individuals and support their behaviour change processes. The resulting model represents a paradigm shift away from operational rigidity in technology development towards system architectures that account for higher-order human needs. © 2024 The Authors.

The development of new injectable molecules for different diseases and reformation of first-generation pharmaceuticals has led to growing interest in making autoinjectors usable for different medications. The major challenge in this quest is the complexity of injecting highly viscous drugs in large volumes. This research aims to develop a dynamic model to describe the influence of drug viscosity and volume on the injection process and evaluate the sensitivity of medication fluid behaviour to variations in component dimensions of the autoinjector fluid delivery system. Using mathematical modelling, the plunger motion is characterised by the spring, fluid resistance and frictional forces between the vial and plunger. It displaces linearly and accelerates until maximum velocity is reached. Slow plunger motion is associated with increasing glide and break-loose force. Wall shear stress captured via Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) modelling is directly proportional to the medication viscosity and it increases linearly for Newtonian and shear-thinning medications. Separation flow is observed in the syringe for viscosities between 15 - 80 cP. This represents decreasing flow as pressure increases, increasing the chances of needle deformation and injection pain due to tissue damage. Injecting highly-viscous drugs is possible via considerations of kinematic and rheological properties. © 2024 by ASME.

In the context of designing of customized products, ensuring the verification of requirements and stakeholder needs in an efficient and cost-effective manner poses significant challenges. This paper proposes a Virtual Prototyping approach, integrating Computer-Aided Design and multibody modelling, to leverage their respective advantages. The presented case study involves the integration of two pre-existing robots, a cobot and an Autonomous Mobile Robot, to realize an Autonomous Mobile Cobot tailored to the specific needs of a manufacturing industry. Through Virtual Prototyping approach, part of the requirements, including spatial and assembly constraint, are verified by means of CAD, while interaction and behavioural requirements are verified through multibody modelling and simulation. This work highlights the efficacy of Virtual Prototyping in achieving comprehensive design verification for tailored products. By simulating the behaviour and performance of the designed system before physical implementation, Virtual Prototyping reduces the time and costs associated with traditional trial-and-error methods. Moreover, it enables a more thorough exploration of design alternatives and optimization strategies, ultimately improving the efficiency and effectiveness of the design process. This integrated approach showcases the potential of digital tools to enhance the development of complex industrial systems, paving the way for tailored solutions to meet evolving market demands.
