In this work we propose a model for place field formation in hippocampus which takes into account the role of recurrent structure of CA3, a sub-region of hippocampus. In this model inputs from entorhinal cortex and dentate gyrus enter CA3 and together with the recurrent neural structure of CA3 form place fields. The model is implemented by considering neuron-glia interactions and Spike timing-dependent plasticity in CA3 neuronal network in order to introduce a biologically plausible model. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed model is able to predict biological observations recorded in the literature to a large extend. Finally, after modifying the proposed model to adapt it to a behaviour corresponding to decrease in glutamate uptake by postsynaptic neurons, which is one of the neural dysfunctions occurring in Alzheimer's disease (AD), the model shows the same changes in the place field formation as is observed in AD. This observation persuades us to work more on this model to prepare a substrate for studying AD disease and its impact on place field formation more deeply.

Incorporating individual health-protective decisions into disease transmission models: a mathematical framework

It is anticipated that the next generation of computational epidemic models will simulate both infectious disease transmission and dynamic human behaviour change. Individual agents within a simulation will not only infect one another, but will also have situational awareness and a decision algorithm that enables them to modify their behaviour. This paper develops such a model of behavioural response, presenting a mathematical interpretation of a well-known psychological model of individual decision making, the health belief model, suitable for incorporation within an agent-based disease-transmission model. We formalize the health belief model and demonstrate its application in modelling the prevalence of facemask use observed over the course of the 2003 Hong Kong SARS epidemic, a well-documented example of behaviour change in response to a disease outbreak.

Through a lumped parameter modelling approach, a dynamical model, which can reproduce the motion of the muscles of a human body standing in different postures during Whole Body Vibrations (WBVs) treatment, has been developed. The key parameters, associated to the dynamics of the motion of the muscles of the lower limbs, have been identified starting from accelerometer measurements. The developed model can be usefully applied to the optimization of WBVs treatments which can effectively enhance muscle activation.

The current efforts in neurorehabilitation technology research are leading to novel robotic devices capable of assisting the human motor rehabilitation process in a repeatable and durable way at low costs. A current major limitation is the inability of accurately evaluating the interaction dynamics between the patient and the robotic device. In this context, it is important to asses how the patient's neuromuscular function is modulated by the robot support. Important neuromuscular variables being modulated throughout the rehabilitation treatment include: the metabolic energy consumption, the muscle activity, the compliance in the subject's muscles and joints, and the resulting moment produced on the human joints and on the assistive device joints. It is currently not possible to accurately predict how these variables vary as the patient interacts with the assistive device. In this scenario, our current research work aims to develop a multi-level modelling approach, which can accurately predict the subject-specific neuromusculoskeletal function as well as the mechanic behavior of the robotic assistive device, and the interaction dynamics emerging from the human-machine cooperation. In this manuscript we present a first study on the development of a dynamically consistent model of a motorized ankle-foot orthosis. This will be in the future combined with physiologically accurate models of the human musculoskeletal system and used to investigate the mechanism underlying human-machine interaction strategies.

One of main challenges in harvesting power from a PV source is maximum power point tracking (MPPT). This is due to the nonlinear behaviour and characteristics of PV arrays. Conventional MPPT techniques usually utilize a hill climbing process which requires partial/full scan of the array power-voltage (P-V) curve resulting in high power fluctuation during peak searching. Dynamic estimation techniques, such as the Kalman filter, benefit from their ability to estimate non-measurable signals with rapid convergence. In this paper, a MPPT technique based on the Iterated Unscented Kalman Filter (IUKF) is presented. The proposed technique achieves: (i) satisfactory MPPT for PV arrays working under varying environmental conditions, (ii) PV array modelling with full parameter estimation including temperature and insolation level, and (iii) full estimation of the working P-V curve for the PV array. Only six measurement points are required for MPPT, modelling, and curve estimation;hence no full scan for the P-V curve is needed. This paper presents the system mathematical model and simulations. Moreover, an experimental setup is implemented illustrating practical results at various insolation levels and temperatures to validate the proposed technique.

Adaptations of context-aware applications do not always result in behaviours that users expect, due to imperfect sensing of context information and variability in human preferences, etc. This can negatively impact the user experience of applications and compromise the trust users have in them. In order to gain user acceptance it is critical for applications to support intelligibility, so they are capable of justifying their adaptive actions and explaining the decision process of adaptations to their users. Based on these intelligible explanations, users should be able to modify application settings/thresholds to correct any undesirable behaviour. This paper presents a model-based developmental framework that supports intelligibility and user control of context-aware applications. It identifies and exposes the internal middleware models which influence adaptation decisions, and facilitates generations of explanations regarding evaluations of the models. These middleware models include preference models defined using Defeasible Logic, situation abstractions specified using Hidden Markov Models and First Order Logic, and context models developed using Context modelling Language. The framework also takes into account users' expertise in technology when providing explanations and control to application behaviours.

This paper presents a buck converter based modelling technique for Brushless DC (BLDC) motor drives. The proposed technique is a better alternative to model BLDC motor drives due to its reduced computational complexity in contrast to the conventional phase-variable model. Using the model, constant speed operation of a BLDC motor drive operated without a DC link capacitor is analysed. Theoretical behaviour of the motor drive, predicted from the model, is compared with Matlab/Simulink based simulations to demonstrate the validity of the model. mathematical expressions are derived from the model to evaluate the steady state performance of the BLDC motor drive, which is presented, in comparison to a similar sized conventional BLDC motor drive. The proposed model and mathematical expressions are expected to be useful at the design stage of the low cost motor drive to achieve comparable performance.

The understanding of human behaviour in the real world is important aspect of attempts to develop effective tools that simulate humans in areas such as ergonomics, manufacturing, transportation, psychology and architecture. In this research, video observation studies and analysis is applied to understand the individual human behaviour in crowded spaces. Individual human behaviour is modelled and simulated using 'agents' with differing characteristics and abilities in a virtual environment. The focus is on developing a simulation method that supports an 'inclusive' sustainable environment which allows full participation of the elderly and disabled people in society.

Today online learning provides wider coverage many different approaches such as distance learning, classroom-based electronic learning and self-access learning. Online learning has been recognized as a support tool for educators and researchers simply it gives is luxury of using at anytime, anywhere. Like any learning process, online learning depends on effective communication of human knowledge, whether this occurs in a face-to-face classroom or across the Internet. Emotions can have enormous affects on learning and play a vital role in decision making, managing learning activities, timing, and reflecting on the studies. Emotions are also important in teaching and learning and often find expression in particular ways, such as interactions with others and motivation in learning. The aim of the research is to develop a computational model for recognizing leaner emotions in online learning environment. The research study was focused on developing a tool to recognise the online learner's emotions. Therefore, the study has developed Online Achievement Emotion Questionnaire (AEQ) based on the AEQ which is suited for the online learning environment. Also the study has identified a methodology for recognising learner performances during learning. That has being measured through six parameters which represent the learner's level of learning during the learning experience. These parameters are analysed using multiple regression analysis and a model equation was developed to compute the online learner's level of learning. Finally the study has analysed and evaluated the correlation between the learner emotions and the observed behaviour. This research study therefore developed a novel model of affective online learning which can be use as a tool to recognise online learner's emotions with regard to the performance in learning.

Load modelling has always been a key missing part in power system analysis especially in transient stability studies. In the Tasmanian power system, about half the load demand comes from industrial loads and some comprise large rotating machines. Therefore, modelling of these loads has to consider their behaviour during disturbances. This paper looks to develop a mathematical load response model for a paper mill connected to the power system. The developed model is based on component-based load modelling approach. A PSCAD model of the paper mill is constructed from available information on the types of loads within the mill. Simulations are then run to study its responses to disturbances. The load model is developed for both voltage and frequency changes but each of them is considered separately. Both voltage and frequency disturbances are then applied during simulations of the paper mill to investigate the combined effect of voltage and frequency disturbances. With this model, the source of each transient response can be easily identified, which can be useful for future mitigation work to avoid system instability issues.
