Appropriate mechanical representation of passive muscle tissue is crucial for human body impact modelling. This requires an understanding of the deformation behaviour of the tissue. Existing data mostly relate to uniaxial compression tests at normalized strain rates of between 0.05%/s and 3200%/s and Split Hopkinson bar tests at normalized strain rates of above 54,000%/s. Thus data on fresh tissue in both the fibre and cross-fibre direction at normalized strain rates relevant to automotive accidents are needed. In this paper results of compressive loading of freshly slaughtered porcine muscle samples using a drop-tower testing rig are reported. Fibre and cross-fibre compression tests at strain rates varying from 11,600%/s to 37,800%/s were performed. Results show a nonlinear stress-stretch relationship as well as a clear rate dependency. The mean (standard deviation) engineering stress in the fibre direction at a stretch of 0.7 was 22.03kPa (1.5kPa) at a strain rate of 22,000%/s and 37.06kPa (3.0kPa) at 37,800%/s. For the cross-fibre direction, the equivalent engineering stresses were 5.95kPa (0.6kPa) at 11,600%/s, 25.88kPa (5.3kPa) at 22,000%/s and 43.68kPa (1.4kPa) at 37,800%/s. However, significant local strain variations and an average of 8% mass loss were observed, highlighting the difficulties in these kinds of tests.

Load modelling has always been a key missing part in power system analysis especially in transient stability studies. In the Tasmanian power system, about half the load demand comes from industrial loads and some comprise large rotating machines. Therefore, modelling of these loads has to consider their behaviour during disturbances. This paper looks to develop a mathematical load response model for a paper mill connected to the power system. The developed model is based on component-based load modelling approach. A PSCAD model of the paper mill is constructed from available information on the types of loads within the mill. Simulations are then run to study its responses to disturbances. The load model is developed for both voltage and frequency changes but each of them is considered separately. Both voltage and frequency disturbances are then applied during simulations of the paper mill to investigate the combined effect of voltage and frequency disturbances. With this model, the source of each transient response can be easily identified, which can be useful for future mitigation work to avoid system instability issues.

This paper presents the development of paraplegic hamstrings muscle model with Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Inference System (ANFIS). A series of experiments using Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) with different stimulation frequencies, pulse width and pulse duration to investigate the impact on muscle output torque are conducted. The data that is obtained is used to develop the paraplegic hamstrings muscle model. 588 training data and 220 testing data set are used in the development of hamstrings muscle model. The ANFIS hamstrings muscle model is found to be the most accurate muscle model representing paraplegic hamstrings muscle model. The established model is then used to predict the behaviour of the underlying system and will be used in the future for the design and evaluation of various control strategies.

UK coasts are subject to widespread erosion in part due to the cumulative effect of human intervention on soft coastlines, and further threatened due to more rapid change due to climate change, especially sea-level rise. At the same time, Shoreline Management now requires predictions of coastal evolution up to 100 years in the future. This leads to the challenge of predicting coastal geomorphic behaviour at the mesoscale (101 to 102 km and 101 to 102 years). Currently, this is often based on expert judgement. However, relevant components for mesoscale coastal simulation are emerging, including: (1) new methods for system-level analysis of coast, estuary and offshore landform behaviour, which include engineering and management interventions in a consistent manner to natural drivers;(2) well validated 'bottom-up' hydrodynamic and sediment transport models such as POLCOMS and TELEMAC;(3) operational 'reduced complexity models' of selected coastal landforms (e.g., cliffs (SCAPE), estuaries (ASMITA), saltmarsh (SLAMM));and (4) growing observational datasets that allow data-driven approaches to coastal analysis and prediction. The iCOASST Project will use these components to develop and apply an integrated systems modelling framework for mesoscale coastal simulation as explained in this paper.

modelling contagious diseases needs to incorporate in the models information about social networks through which the disease spreads out as well as data about demographic and genetic changes in the susceptible population, and also to include mechanistic knowledge about contacts between hosts and pathogens. We will introduce all these elements in two examples of contagious diseases, the obesity, a social pathology partly caused by behaviour mimicking some dominant habits of nutrition and HIV transmitted through social networks. Obesity spread modelling will use the notion of homophilic graphs and we will show that a micro-simulation of IBM type (Individual Based modelling) can reproduce the current stable incidence of the HIV epidemic in a population of HIV-positive MSM (Men having Sex with Men).

In this paper we analyse the energy consumption of BitTorrent, the most popular Peer-to-Peer (P2P) application, over IP/WDM networks considering different peers behaviour scenarios. We show, by mathematical modelling and simulation, that leechers can cause high network energy consumption if they leave the network after finishing downloading. We introduce an energy efficient approach to compensate for the negative impact of leechers departure on network energy consumption.

Considering high efficiency of fish robots, their development to accomplish marine tasks is indispensible. In order to do that initially the robot needs to be mathematically modeled and simulated with respect to its mechanical design. For simulation, the parameters of the mathematical model require optimization. In this paper, a fish robot with two degrees of freedom (DOF) is introduced. After that, the dynamic equations of motion of the robot are presented and discussed. To simulate the robot, the constant parameters of the equations are optimized using Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm. Finally, applying both optimized and non-optimized parameters in the simulation, the effect of each parameter on the behaviour of the robot is observed and analyzed.

This paper presents the in flight thermal behaviour of ESA's second ATV, Johannes Kepler, and shows a comprehensive comparison of the post flight analysis and the actual flight measurements. The ATV is exposed to a thermal environment with very variable conditions according to its mission phase and to the date of the mission (free-flight phase, attached to the ISS, beta angle, attitude, dissipation level, etc) and therefore requires a complex thermal control system design. Hence it consists of a passive part (MLI, thermal filler, etc) and an active part (Variable conductance heat pipes and heated items, etc.) allowing to keep the temperatures within their required limits and to optimize the heater power consumption with regards to power resources. During flight, the minimum and maximum temperatures as well as the average consumed heater power per heater lines have been recorded for each orbit and afterwards compared to the prediction of the thermal mathematical model (TMM). The TMM was established and validated during the ATV development. For the application on ATV2 slightly changes on the ISS configuration and the ATV2 specific mission profile (cargo mass, power dissipation, attitude, etc) were made. The comparison to flight measurements shows very good agreement and the slight deviations observed are caused by the assumptions and simplifications necessary to restrict the size and the calculation duration of the simulations. The first ATV mission (ATV Jules Verne) was a demonstration flight where the complete range of mission maneuvers was performed. The ATV2 was the first flight model (FM1) and performed a nominal mission profile. Thus the mission duration of the ATV2 was significantly shorter (4 months including 10 days of free flight) than that of the first mission (7 months including 2 months of free flight). A super heater is a device that is used to convert wet, saturated steam into dry steam. Dry steam at 538°C contains more thermal energy. It increases the overall efficiency of the cycle. The modelling of the Super heater is done to control the temperature. The paper deals with simulation of control of power plant Super heaters by means of Simulink. The simulation models are developed. These are applied to electrical power generating plants in order to characterize the essential dynamic behaviour of the boiler. The corresponding models are used for the power plant processes. mathematical model of a super heater is described by sets of nonlinear partial differential equations. Estimation of the Super heater model is done by the System identification tool for design of a steam temperature control system. Data obtained by the measurement compared with simulation results.
