In the past, the studies of mode choice decision focusing on the air transport and ground transport is very limited. In contrast to earlier literature, this paper examines the impacts of budget airlines in modelling the mode choice of business travellers towards the air transport and ground transport. By undertaking a stated preference survey in Klang Valley region, Malaysia, discrete choice models are developed to analyze the behaviour and preference of business travellers towards the choice of conventional airline, budget airline, bus, car and train. The results reveal that the travelling destination, travel time, travel cost, safety and comfort are the significant determinants. The socio-economic factors of gender, race and monthly income are also found to be the influential factors. Additionally, the results of sensitivity analysis confirmed that the variation of the comfort level have a significant impact, i.e. 4.24% on the mode shift. The findings highlight beneficial information for the transport operators in improving their service's planning.

Functional magnetic resonance imaging is an improved method for observing correlates of neural brain activity at high spatial resolution in human subjects. This technique is used for determining the specific regions of activation in the brain's cortical areas while the subject performs a pre designed motor task. Localized changes in cortical blood oxygenation during voluntary fist movements are modeled in a statistical framework such as general linear model (GLM) to obtain statistical parametric maps that represent various neuronal activations in the brain. fMRI was performed during visually cued motor task on a healthy subject in a 3.0 T scanner using gradient echo planar imaging with a 60 s repetition time. Evaluation of fMRI data is performed using SPM and final results are used to determine effective connectivity within a bilateral network comprising M1, premotor cortex (PMC) and supplementary motor area (SMA). Dynamic Causal modelling (DCM) is used to analyze the effective connectivity between the above specified regions of the brain.

The behaviour of skin is still not well understood and characterising skin properties is always challenging due to its complex biological structure. Nevertheless, this paper highlights the success of determining skin material parameters using Ogden's model and finite element (FE) simulation. The approach involved integrating experiment, FE modelling and inverse-FE analysis. Data from in vivo experiments were used to develop 2D hyperelastic finite element models based on Ogden's constitutive equation and systematic case studies were constructed. By iteratively varying several material parameters and values, FE simulations were performed to simulate the skin deformation according to the actual experimental set up. The results were compared to the experiments' and the best match curve constitutes the material parameters. The current results show that the Ogden's coefficient and exponent for the subject was estimated to be μ = 10 Pa and α = 40 respectively. Further analyses using other models such as Mooney-Rivlin and Neo-Hookean could be carried out for comparison. Nevertheless, this study has contributed to the knowledge about skin behaviour.

Pedometers are increasingly being used for purposes like assessment of physical activity, rehabilitation, disease management and as a utility for the visually impaired. These devices rely on algorithms that consist of measuring distance covered by the number of steps taken. Conventional estimations of distance covered rely on empirically obtained relations to arrive at their data. In this paper, we present a means of estimating the distance covered by the wearer through a more realistic model using sensor readings from a 3-axis accelerometer present in most pedometers as well as in modern phones and tablets. First comes step detection where each individual step taken by the wearer is identified. Subsequently, we determine stride length, based on the inverted pendulum model and the periodicity of accelerations generated by humans. Lastly, we obtain the total distance covered during the walk. Finally, we analyze the results with respect to currently existing models.

Magneto-rheological fluid (MR) is part of smart materials and main property, very used in practical applications, consists in viscosity modification in case of exposal to a magnetic field. Magneto-rheological stop valve (VMR) represents one of its most known applications. Thanks to non-Newtonian flow of MR fluid, its mathematical modelling is very difficult. Because of that part of the parameters of the mathematical model must be experimentally determined. This paper presents the determination of mathematical function that describes wave front of MR fluid flow, named wave front function. Furthermore, comparative experimental results obtained for VMR testing for different sets of parameters are presented. The influence of important parameters for VMR behaviour is studied. For this study, an experimental stand has been projected which allows VMR testing and dynamic parameters acquisition for this type of valves. By comparative study the influence of qualitative behavior of these parameters in VMR is determined. Based on data from this study accurate mathematical models can be realized depending on constructive variant of the valve.

Bi-directional Inductive Power Transfer (IPT) systems allow contactless power transfer between two sides and across an air-gap, through weak magnetic coupling. These systems essentially constitute high order resonant circuit and their complexity increases with increasing number of pick-ups. A mathematical model which provides an insight into the behaviour of bi-directional IPT systems with multiple pick-ups would therefore be invaluable at design stage. This paper develops a multivariable dynamic model for bi-directional IPT system with multiple pick-ups. A 1.5 kW bi-directional IPT system with 3 pick-ups is simulated in PLECS and the results are presented with comparisons to demonstrate the validity of the proposed model. Results of the simulation indicate that the proposed model accurately predicts the behaviour of bi-directional IPT system with multiple pick-ups and can therefore be used as a valuable tool for both dynamic analysis and controller design.

The authors investigate the dynamical behaviour of a Duolever type of suspension on a standard sports motorcycle. The paper contains the modelling aspects of it, as well as the optimization process followed in order to obtain the suspension parameters and geometry arrangements. Head angle, wheelbase and normal trail are studied as indicators of the handling properties of the suspension system. Matlab optimization toolbox was used to design a mathematical model of a duolever front suspension system which keeps its normal trail constant during the full suspension travel. By using VehicleSim software, non-linear simulations were performed on motorcycle model that includes a duolever suspension. By a quasi-static variation of the forward speed of the motorcycle, the time histories of the system's states were obtained. The corresponded root locus to the linearized model were plotted and compared to those of the original motorcycle model without duolever system. A modal analysis was performed in order to get a deeper understanding of the different modes of oscillation and how the duolever system affects them. The results show that whilst a satisfactory anti-dive effect is achieved with this suspension system, it has a destabilizing effect on pitch and wobble modes.

Using a first-principles approach, the constituent components of a series hybrid electric car are modelled and integrated to form an overall coupled dynamic model. Controllers for the individual components are constructed, and are combined with a load follower supervisory controller and driver model to enable simulation of the vehicle under general operating conditions. The powertrain includes AC/DC, DC/AC and DC/DC converters which are described by standard average models with realistic power efficiencies. The powertrain also includes permanent magnet synchronous machines that are modelled using conventional d-q frame equations. There is novelty in the use of a general purpose friction moment, acting on each of the electrical machines, that is included to capture the equivalent energy loss due to friction, eddie currents and hysteresis, thus providing a good match between the predicted steady-state behaviour of the machines and experimental data. A longitudinal vehicle dynamics model with realistic descriptions for the tyres, aerodynamic resistance, suspension and continuously variable transmission (CVT) is also included. A scheme for improving the motor efficiency under general operating conditions, by controlling the CVT, is devised. The overall vehicle model is used to track the New European Drive Cycle (NEDC), for two design scenarios, one with fixed and one with variable final drive ratio. The simulation results demonstrate the applicability of the model for control system design, realistic prediction of vehicle behaviour and energy losses in the various components, and design optimisation.

human tracking in dynamic scenes has been an important topic of research. Objects in the world exhibit complex interactions when captured in a video sequence, some interactions manifest themselves as occlusions. A visual tracking system must be able to track objects which are partially or even fully occluded. In this paper, we propose an approach for tracking multiple objects in dynamic scenes to handle objects partial occlusion. The algorithm consists of two steps at first step we use Gaussian Mixture Model as an effective way to extract moving objects from a video sequence. Then a combinational method is used for shadow removal. The second step of the proposed algorithm is object tracking framework based on Kalman filtering which uses Stable Marriage Problem (SMP) implemented algorithm which is adapted to perform data association and occlusion detection, and fast mean shift computation results for tracking during occlusion . Our approach has the advantages of low cost and low complexity, and can be realized in real time system and is tested on using several real world datasets.

A Current-to-Pressure (I/P) converter is a device which converts a current input, typically between 4mA and 20mA, to a proportional pressure output. Such devices are often used in valve positioners and regulators to provide accurate and flexible control. This paper describes a physics based mathematical model of an I/P converter implemented using Matlab which is capable of simulating response under dynamic conditions. Detailed physical conditions such as thermal conduction and convection (and their effects on components), compressible orifice flow and inertial movement of components have been incorporated into the model using an explicit time-stepping lumped-parameter scheme. Parameters were obtained for the model using a series of novel experimental procedures. Experimental tests were carried out on a set of I/P converters over a range of operating temperatures and input current sequences. It is shown that the correlation between the simulated results (based on only measured physical characteristics of components) and the experimental test results is quantitatively accurate. It is further shown that the simulation allows the effects of significant design changes to be predicted, and that comparison between experimental and simulated results reveals areas where complex flow behaviour modifies pressure output significantly.
