This paper proposes a co-simulation architecture based on software component standard. It proposes a pattern to unify the co-simulation interfaces of several building energy simulation tools. It will thus facilitate and generalize the establishment of a co-simulation. Advantages of this strategy are highlighted through the coupling between the software COMFIE for thermal envelope simulation and the tool BRAHMS for occupant behaviour simulator, in the Matlab/Simulink environment. Linking these two tools is essential to take profit from their specific skills in each area and ensure a detailed simulation of both precise physical models and computational models of human cognitive abilities. This is needed to ensure an efficient building control taking into account the complexity of this system.

A mathematical model has been developed to generate stochastic synthetic vertical force signals induced by a single person jumping. The model is based on a unique database of experimentally measured individual jumping loads which has the most extensive range of possible jumping frequencies. The ability to replicate many of the temporal and spectral features of real jumping loads gives this model a definite advantage over the conventional half-sine models coupled with Fourier series analysis. This includes modelling of the omnipresent lack of symmetry of individual jumping pulses and jump-by-jump variations in amplitudes and timing. The model therefore belongs to a new generation of synthetic narrow band jumping loads which simulate reality better. The proposed mathematical concept for characterisation of near-periodic jumping pulses may be utilised in vibration serviceability assessment of civil engineering assembly structures, such as grandstands, spectator galleries, footbridges and concert or gym floors, to estimate more realistically dynamic structural response due to people jumping.

Multi-agent systems (MAS) are driving the way to design and engineer control solutions that exhibit flexibility, adaptation and reconfigurability, which are important advantages over traditional centralized systems. The understanding, design and testing of such distributed agent-based approaches, and particularly those exhibiting self-* properties, are usually a hard task. Simulation assumes a crucial role to analyse the behaviour of MAS solutions during the design phase and before its deployment into the real operation. Particularly, Agent-Based modelling (ABM) tools are well suited to simulate MAS systems that exhibit complex phenomena, like emergent behaviour and self-organization. This paper discusses the simulation of agent-based manufacturing systems and introduces the advantages of using ABM tools. The NetLogo platform is used to illustrate the benefits of such tools in the manufacturing world on the specification of a MAS system for a washing machine production line.

Friction Stir Welding (FSW) is a relatively new solid-state joining technique, which is versatile, environment friendly, and energy and time efficient. For a comprehensive understanding of the effects of process conditions, such as tool rotation speed and traverse speed, on characterisations of welded materials, it is essential to establish prediction models for different aspects of the materials' behaviours. Because of the high complexity of the FSW process, it is often difficult to derive accurate and yet transparent enough mathematical models. In such a situation, a systematic data-driven fuzzy modelling approach is developed and implemented in this paper to model FSW behaviour relating to AA5083 aluminium alloy, consisting of microstructural features, mechanical properties, as well as overall weld quality. This methodology allows constructing transparent fuzzy models considering both accuracy and interpretability attributes of fuzzy systems. The elicited models proved to be accurate, interpretable and robust and can be further applied to facilitate the optimal design of process parameters, with the aim of finding the optimal combinations of process parameters to achieve desired welding properties.

The in vitro culture of hydrogel-based constructs above a critical size is accompanied by problems of unequal cell distribution when diffusion is the primary mode of oxygen transfer. In this study, an experimentally-informed mathematical model was developed to relate cell proliferation and death inside fibrin hydrogels to the local oxygen tension in a quantitative manner. The predictive capacity of the resulting model was tested by comparing its outcomes to the density, distribution and viability of human periosteum derived cells (hPDCs) that were cultured inside fibrin hydrogels in vitro. The model was able to reproduce important experimental findings, such as the formation of a multilayered cell sheet at the hydrogel periphery and the occurrence of a cell density gradient throughout the hydrogel. In addition, the model demonstrated that cell culture in fibrin hydrogels can lead to complete anoxia in the centre of the hydrogel for realistic values of oxygen diffusion and consumption. A sensitivity analysis also identified these two parameters, together with the proliferation parameters of the encapsulated cells, as the governing parameters for the occurrence of anoxia. In conclusion, this study indicates that mathematical models can help to better understand oxygen transport limitations and its influence on cell behaviour during the in vitro culture of cell-seeded hydrogels. The mathematical tool was used for a long time to model the dynamics of the populations, at present approach of modeling Multi-agents seem to be promising in the views of its capacity to master the complexity of the studied systems. In this work we try to model the population of cells occurring during the infection by the virus of the human immunodeficiency (HIV) to show the efficiency of the approach Multi-agents by comparing with the mathematical approach. The obtained results allowed to bring to light the behaviour and the interactions between the various cells studied in agreement with the biological reports.
