The paper motivates the explicit recognition of communication and hands-on experience when stakeholders design work processes, both, on the individual and on the organization level. As a straightforward implementation Subject-oriented Business Process Management is reviewed. Its constructs for modelling and resulting capabilities for seamless execution when using a corresponding suite are discussed. In particular, it is shown how stakeholders can articulate their way of task accomplishment in terms of communication relationships while producing an executable model. As the behaviour of all participating stakeholders in a specific business process can be expressed in terms of communication acts, adjusting individual and task-relevant flows of communication leads to a complete picture of an organization in operation. Moreover, subject-oriented representations allow executing the resulting workflow without further transformations. They enable interactive experience of business processes which in turn facilitates (collective) reflection and redesign. In this way, stakeholders can trigger and control seamless round-trips in organizational development. It minimizes development costs and social risks, since alternative ways of task accomplishment can be negotiated before becoming operational in daily business.

Boussinesq-type equations (BTE) have become the favourites for modelling waves in the coastal zone, due to their large range of application and recent improvements on breaking and nonlinear effects representation. Nevertheless, moving shoreline boundary conditions is still an unclear issue, since BTE become singular at zero depth. From a mathematical standpoint, Saint-Venant equations (SVE) should be employed near the shoreline, where dispersion is negligible. Validated resolution schemes for SVE reproduce the propagation of breaking waves and the dry-wet interface behaviour. Since BTE and SVE are best suited for different zones, we have developed a hybrid finite-volume approach, modelling wave propagation from deep water to the surf zone with BTE and the swash zone with SVE. We present a simple method to communicate both schemes using a quasi-hyperbolic decomposition of BTE and solving a Riemann-type problem locally. The model is tested against solitary and regular wave measurements. © 34th IAHR Congress 2011. All rights reserved.

engineering problems are tedious and time consuming to solve manually due to higher complexity. Though the biological systems are very complex they are susceptible to engineering analysis. This forms the basis for bioprocess modeling optimization and simulation. In the microbial world mixed culture operations play a vital role. In such case interaction among them decides the output of the system and five patterns of interactions (namely neutralism, amensalism, competition, commensalism, mutualism, predation and parasitism) are observed so far. In the present work an innovative and unified approach is developed to characterize these patterns of interactions among microorganisms for two species interaction. The models were derived from experimental data in batch mode using CFTOOL kit and the differential equations were solved using ODE SOLVER in MATLAB 7.1. The simulation for continuous operations was carried Out using C++ software and the interpretations are obtained using surface plots drawn using MINITAB.

We describe the EpiMap project, in which mobile phones and sensors record the proximity of other devices, to gather information on human interactions within the rural communities of developing countries. Collected information will be used to develop improved mathematical models of the spread of infectious diseases, such as measles, tuberculosis and pneumococcal diseases. modelling will be complemented by the use of surveys to aid in the understanding of living conditions in these villages. EpiMap is an extension of the FluPhone project, which we carried out in 2010. FluPhone collected data on human interaction, by using mobile phones to record information such as locality and user symptoms. Delay tolerant opportunistic networks such as the Haggle framework [5] were used as a basis for communication. We introduce the EpiMap vision for a system of opportunistic networks combined with satellite communication, designed to face the challenges posed by weak power and communications infrastructure in the rural regions of developing countries in Asia, Africa and South America. We aim to use a delay-tolerant small satellite for data transfer between developing countries and Europe and North America. Data collected through EpiMap can be used to help design more efficient vaccination strategies and equitable control programmes. © 2011 ACM.

The current paper discusses an extended investigation on the hydrodynamic behaviour of soil erosion under the fully controlled laboratory conditions studied in previous experiments (Jayaratne et al., 2010a, 2010b). The Ahlborn sediment mobile bed tank at the University of East London hydraulics laboratory was purposefully re-fabricated to install a Soil Protrusion Apparatus (SPA) for investigating sediment properties on soil erodibility (Jayaratne et al., 2010a). A plastic sediment bed was used to allow hydraulic measurements to be carried out with clear visual observation. An HD digital video camera was used to record the soil-hydrodynamic phenomena and digital images were analysed to obtain accurate measurements of the spreading area and volume with a computer aided design software. Extended physical modelling of crescent zones also included analysing their grain size distribution. Measured sediment and flow data were used to develop a simple empirical relationship for erosion rate for each crescent zone using dimensional analysis and best-fit techniques. © 34th IAHR Congress 2011. Virtual Environments can be considered as asynchronous distributed systems with static and highly dynamic aspects. Despite a number of available design tools, the dynamic aspects, behaviour and interaction, are mainly designed and developed with ad hoc solutions utilizing high-level programming or scripting languages without any engineered design procedure. This leads to neither reusable nor readable solutions letting design of dynamic in Virtual Environments still a complex and time-consuming task. In this work the Asynchronous Multi-Agent Abstract State Machine model is analyzed. Its suitability to the design of dynamic aspects of Virtual Environments is evaluated in order to put the basis to the development of a design methodology unifying the intuitiveness of Agent Based Modeling with the Abstract State Machine theoretical foundations and well defined methodology.

A programme of research is outlined which considers the foaming performance and foam behaviour of surfactant systems commonly encountered in hand-wash laundry detergent applications. An experimental study of the physical chemistry of foam generation indicates that precipitation of a typical anionic surfactant with calcium forms mesophase particles and causes a marked reduction in the rate of transport of surfactant to air water surfaces and a concomitant reduction in foaming. Oily soil antifoam effects are however insensitive to the presence of calcium, being equally effective regardless of pH and calcium content. They may be reproduced by a simple particle oil mixture of a saturated and an unsaturated triglyceride (e.g. tristearin and triolein respectively). A detailed foam rheometry study is performed using foam flowing through a constriction. Bubble shapes are used to deduce the normal and shear stresses across the foam flow field. Broad agreement between the experimental stress field and that obtained from quasistatic simulations is demonstrated. As foam flow-rate increases, a different model, which takes explicit account of viscous dissipative forces within the foam flow field is required. The dissipative foam flow model predicts differential shrinkage and stretch rates of foam films. Coupled to a model for surfactant transport, this shows the extent to which surfactant concentration accumulates in shrinking films and is depleted in stretching films. In addition to film stretching, it is also important to know about film bursting or failure rates. Here failure rates are estimated using capillary suction pressures exerted on the films by Plateau border channels around film edges. The failure rates can then be employed to predict the evolution of bubble size at various spatial locations in a foam: reasonable agreement with experimental bubble size distributions is obtained. In the construction of new facilities and projects in existing facilities objective is to incorporate efficient, cost-effective fire protection and life safety systems that are effective in detecting, extinguishing or controlling a fire event that results in improving overall building safety. The primary goal is to protect human life from fire and products of combustion. The secondary goals are to reduce the potential loss from fire. Model that is used for simulation is a single office room in the PHOENICS VR-Editor, with the following additional items for smoke movement calculation, with output of PPM, smoke density and visibility. General 3D conservation equations (mass, momentum and energy conservation) are solved numerically under input conditions specific for fire. The KE-EPSILON model has been applied. As a result of mathematical modelling, unsteady 3D fields of gas velocity and temperature, smoke concentration have been obtained and analyzed while taking into account the influence of mechanical ventilation in a standard office room. It was concluded that CFD modelling using PHOENICS could be applied systematically to investigate the dynamics of fire-spread under the influence of various internal indoor conditions.

We propose a Deep Belief Net model for robust motion generation, which consists of two layers of Restricted Boltzmann Machines (RBMs). The lower layer has multiple RBMs for encoding real-valued spatial patterns of motion frames into compact representations. The upper layer has one conditional RBM for learning temporal constraints on transitions between those compact representations. This separation of spatial and temporal learning makes it possible to reproduce many attractive dynamical behaviors such as walking by a stable limit cycle, a gait transition by bifurcation, synchronization of limbs by phaselocking, and easy top-down control. We trained the model with human motion capture data and the results of motion generation are reported here. © 2011 S. Sukhbaatar, T. Makino, K. Aihara & T. Chikayama.

Cognitive reliability and error analysis method (CREAM) has been developed and gradually complemented with novel quantitative techniques to enhance its inherent perspective human error probability (HEP) analysis. While some probabilistic models are used to improve the accuracy of analyzing HEP, they ignore the characteristics of the easiness, visibility and integrity of the traditional deterministic method in CREAM. This paper aims to establish a novel Bayesian network model, which is capable of providing the instant and precise estimate of HEP given the updated information about a dynamic context without compromising the easiness and visibility features of the traditional method. The mathematical procedure of developing the Bayesian network is described in a 6-step methodology, including definition of primary effects of common performance conditions (CPCs), adjustment of dependency of CPCs, new grouping of CPCs, distributions of prior conditional probabilities, integration of positive and negative CPCs and estimate of HEP. Main contributions of this paper lie in its original intention of eliminating irrelevant neutral primary effects in the process of adjusting CPC dependency and separately treating the numbers of positive and negative effects of CPCs. The proposed quantitative HEP analysis methodology can be widely applied to various industries to facilitate the associated human error reduction and operational safety improvement.
