Detection of individuals' intentions and actions from a stream of humanbehaviour is an open and complex problem. There is however an intrinsic need to automatically recognise the activities performed by users of mobility assistive aids to better understand their behavioural patterns, with the ultimate objective of improving the utility of these devices. While discriminative algorithms such as Support Vector Machines (SVM) are well understood, generative probabilistic approaches to machine learning such as Dynamic Bayesian Networks (DBN) have only recently started gaining increasing interest within the robotics community. In this paper, a comprehensive evaluation of these techniques is carried out for human activity recognition in the context of their applicability to assistive robotics. Results show comparable recognition rates, offering valuable insights into the advantageous characteristics of DBN in relation to their dynamic and unsupervised nature for realistic human-robot interaction modelling.

The p53 tumour suppressor plays key regulatory roles in various fundamental biological processes, including development, ageing and cell differentiation. It is therefore known as "the guardian of the genome" and is currently the most extensively studied protein worldwide. Besides members of the biomedical community, who view p53 as a promising target for novel anticancer therapies, the complex network of protein interactions modulating p53's activity has captivated the attention of theoreticians and modellers due to the possible occurrence of oscillations in protein levels in response to stress. This paper presents new insights into the behaviour of the p53 network, which we acquired by combining mathematical and experimental techniques. Notably, our data raises the question of whether the discrete p53 pulses in single cells, observed using fluorescent labelling, could in fact be an artefact. Furthermore, we propose a new model for the p53 pathway that is amenable to analysis by computational methods developed within the OPAALS project.

This paper discusses the feasibility of individually designing human prosthesis for surgical use and proposes a methodology for such design through mathematical extrapolation of data from digital images obtained via tomography of individual patient's bones. Individually tailored prosthesis designed to fit particular patient requirements as accurately as possible should result in more successful reconstruction, enable better planning before surgery and consequently fewer complications during surgery. Fast and accurate design and manufacture of personalized prosthesis for surgical use in bone replacement or reconstruction is potentially feasible through the application and integration of several different existing technologies, which are each at different stages of maturity. Initial case study experiments have been undertaken to validate the research concepts by making dimensional comparisons between a bone and a virtual model produced using the proposed methodology. Future research directions are discussed in the final section of this paper.

In this paper we presented some considerations concerning computerized analysis of a complex and flexible methodology used to evaluate and investigate the human performances limits in different activities situations and in bipodal posture. In the first part of the paper we reviewed some points related to the theoretical aspects of biomechanical studies for stability and equilibrium. In the second part of the paper we describe the research methodology as well as the experimental system integrated with the analysis procedures. In the final part we present the analysis results and conclusions.

In October 2007 a series of seismic tests were carried out on a 7-storey building made of cross laminated (XLam) wooden panels in natural scale on a shaking table E-Defence in Japan within the SOFIE project. The paper presents calculation procedure, prediction of dynamic behaviour of the tested structure excited by the earthquake record "Kobe JMA 1995" and comparison between predicted, that means calculated and measured response. Due to blind prediction approach some construction details were not known before dynamic time history response calculation. Therefore some assumptions, engineering judgment and rough static analyses were needed to define all construction parts which were in modelling approach assumed as important and could have had influence on dynamic response of the analyzed structure. The most important assumptions related to the definition of the stiffness and load bearing capacity of mechanical connections, types of anchors and their positions in each floor level, were determined on the basis of static analysis where the structure was loaded with equivalent horizontal seismic forces and then were used in dynamic analysis. A mathematical model was developed in program SAP2000 where modal and time history analyses were carried out. Comparison of calculated and measured results is described and evaluated on the basis of the model assumptions and its simplification.
