Dynamic behaviour of a common machine tool design with fixed-mounted linear feed drives is characterized by disturbances caused by motion axes operation. It excites vibration which deteriorates machined surface quality and machining productivity as well. Those aspects represent important factors when evaluating the machine tool quality. There are several possibilities of how to suppress the vibration. It is possible to absorb the vibration by means of a dynamic vibroabsorber or to improve damping of the whole machine structure. However, vibroisolation of the motion axis from the rest of machine tool represents a more efficient method. New concept of the vibroisolation technique based on active mounting of the feed drive motor is presented in this paper, whereby application of an active element with enough large stroke acting between the motor and machine frame is considered. Employing this approach, natural frequencies of the machine tool are not excited and consequently machine tool frame is isolated from forced vibration. The paper shows simulation results of the active vibroisolation method using a mathematical model of a test bed and a real machine tool. Experimental investigation of the method on a real testing bed has been performed as well.

Advent of bio-readsorbable devices for drug release was made possible thanks to polymers as poly-lactic acid (PLLA) and poly-glycolic acid (PGA) which are tolerated by the human body and degrade in situ because of hydrolysis mechanism. Nowadays, an increased demand for a better reliability in drug delivery systems emerged, and researchers are replacing "trial and error" methods with approaches based on mathematical models. Indeed a good model is able to predict variables influence and trends, avoiding an expensive and time consuming experimental activity. Here we present a mathematical model (based on fundamental conservation equations) which describes the degradation in a tissue of a bioresorbable suture thread in which a drug is loaded, and the behaviour of the drug in the tissue. Model leads to a system of partial differential equations, from which a large system of ordinary differential equations can be obtained applying method of lines. Resulting system was solved with a fourth order Runge Kutta.

Building a navigation system within a 3-dimensional virtual computer world is challenging. Further, building our navigable virtual world corresponding to real world facts (such as a map or a landscape of a given area) magnifies this challenge. This research investigates on possibilities of modeling a 3D navigable world corresponding to real world facts via mathematical constructs derived using the provided information of a given area. Thereafter, this realism augmented 3D navigation system is transformed into a 3D virtual driving simulator. Our driving simulator is used as a tool for measuring driver behaviour under different types of varied conditions. The final output of this simulator after a single driving session is a sample data set indicating predefined metrics;those can be used to state observations for a typical human factors experiment. Hence the observations after a driving session in a simulated environment are used to derive useful inferences with respect to real driving. The metrics include;number of wall collisions, number of traffic cone collisions, time taken per driving session and speed detected during different times (can be used to obtain a speed graph later). The sample human factors experiment tested on our driving simulator is about inferring the relationship between driver behaviour vs. consumption of alcohol, which is simplified to driver behaviour vs. drowsiness for the sake of demonstration.

Many different individuals, who have their own expertise and criteria for decision making, are involved in making decisions on construction projects. Decision-making processes are thus significantly affected by communication, in which a dynamic performance of human intentions leads to unpredictable outcomes. In order to theorise the decision making processes including communication, it is argued here that the decision making processes resemble evolutionary dynamics in terms of both selection and mutation, which can be expressed by the replicator-mutator equation. To support this argument, a mathematical model of decision making has been made from an analogy with evolutionary dynamics, in which there are three variables: initial support rate, business hierarchy, and power of persuasion. On the other hand, a survey of patterns in decision making in construction projects has also been performed through self-administered mail questionnaire to construction practitioners. Consequently, comparison between the numerical analysis of mathematical model and the statistical analysis of empirical data has shown a significant potential of the replicator-mutator equation as a tool to study dynamic properties of intentions in communication.

Recent travel forecasting models have focussed upon the fact that travel is derived from the activities in which people participate, such as work, school, shopping, sport, leisure, and social events. Non-discretionary activities such as work and school may be explained by the traveller's sociodemographic characteristics and generalised travel costs, as well as long-term decisions such as a decision to move to a particular town. Participation in social and leisure activities is determined by one's friends and the groups that one is a member of, i.e., their household, their workplace/school, sporting groups, voluntary organisations and clubs. These acquaintances form part of an individual's social network: a representation of the people one interacts with. This demonstrates a shift in the activity-travel modelling field from "where" to "what" and now towards "who with". On top of this, our changing use of ICT is influencing our activity and travel patterns, as some activities can now be replaced by online activities, and online activities can lead to actual travel. Some researchers are already looking beyond households to the influence of social networks. However, we are not aware of any agent-based urban models considering activity-travel choice of individuals. Existing work is in the conceptual or early implementation phases. The aim of this project is to develop and validate a model combining social ("who with") and spatial ("where") networks for investigating and predicting social activities. In this paper, we describe the design of our model. Agent-based modelling is a good fit for our model. Our system consists of different people, their relationships and interactions with each other, and their activities in and possible movement around the environment. The topology is not homogeneous and clusters may form. We have used a combination of the metamodels found in mature agent-oriented software engineering methodologies to design our model, focussing on system goals
