Coupled problems occur widely in the pure and applied sciences and engineering. Two types of models are becoming more common-multiscale models, which couple physical phenomena operating on different spatiotemporal scales, and multiphysics models, which couple distinct natural phenomena. The modelling of coupled systems is an emerging discipline that is now the focus workshops and conferences. Many groups have created model coupling software, spanning a spectrum ranging from custom-made, problem-specific solutions and application domain-specific frameworks to open-source and commercial generic coupling infrastructure packages. Constructing complex coupled models from numerous interacting models-or constituents-can be notoriously difficult. Coupled models exhibit knowledge, software, and algorithmic /computational complexity. Interdisciplinary teams are the mechanism used to master knowledge complexity. But how does one grapple with the other two types of complexity? Current practice is an ad hoc approach in which an interdisciplinary group achieves their goal by "just figuring it out" (JFIO). The problem with JFIO is it often begins with a team feeling thwarted and overwhelmed, proceeds without a clear roadmap, entails generous amounts of trial-and-error, and is prone to surprises that can cause delays. Furthermore, in software engineering terms JFIO is of low-level process maturity (e. g., not reproducible). Coupled systems thus far built typically have relatively few (similar to 5-1 0) constituents. Any attempt to tackle more complex system modelling exercises such as coupling climate to energy and economics models or simulating a whole organism like the human body will require coupling of a significantly larger number of constituents. It is doubtful that JFIO will scale to meet such a challenge. Ideally, one would like a "cook book" approach to building a coupled model. Workforce planning is an essential activity that is required to optimally utilize human resources in an organization, work center or service facility. The assignment problem, which is a special case of the transportation problem, is an example of optimally and uniquely allocating each resource (e.g., an employee, machine or time slot) to a particular activity (e.g., a task, site or event). Another problem in workforce planning arises when management needs to employ the right number of people to perform daily tasks such as in a reception department. Each employee is weekly required to work a certain number of days (not necessarily consecutive) and the number of required employees varies from day to day according to demand. In particular, if every employee is required to work five days a week and takes any two days off, then scheduling employees to meet daily requirements becomes a formidable task for management. This problem is harder than when the two off-days are consecutive. This paper addresses the problem of finding the optimal number of employees to be assigned each day of the week and determining the weekly schedule of each employee given that on each day at least a certain number of employees must be used to meet job or project requirements. The approach presented here is to solve the problem in two stages. The first stage solves the problem with two consecutive off-days using a linear integer programming model. The second stage uses a zero-one integer programming model utilizing results of the first stage. Both mathematical formulation and solution to the problem are developed, and the LINDO computer package is used to solve an illustrative example. The optimum daily workforce size and schedule of every employee are thus obtained.

Controllers, especially PIDs, are extensively used in industrial practice, and there is a continual search for methods that facilitate controller parameter setting, with low requirements on the operator's knowledge. Ideally, they should be fully automatically, and should require no human participation. One of the methods presented recently is based on an experimentally performed evaluation of excited frequency responses with the aim of achieving recommended values of one or more control quality indicators known from the course of the Nyquist plot. Unlike their linear origin, the indicators can be obtained in control loops involving nonlinearities even in the controller. In this sense, the method has a philosophy similar to that of the popular Ziegler and Nichols method. No mathematical model and theory is required for its implementation. All processing is carried out by a program added to the control algorithm. No additional instrumentation is necessary. This paper presents considerations when dealing with real plants with strong nonlinearity in t heir behaviour in conjunction with improvements in indicator evaluation.

It is well recognised today that climate change is affecting the Earth's physical and biological systems, and is expected to do so on forthcoming decadal to century timescales. A need exists for useable predictions of the impacts associated with such climate change, and the likely societal responses to these. This must also be seen in the context of other drivers of global change, and be presented at suitable spatial and temporal scales, to enable prioritisation of adaptation measures which are feasible in the most vulnerable communities, countries and regions. Climate modelling is advancing, with much better simulations able to explain observed changes believed to be a consequence of raised atmospheric greenhouse gas concentrations. Generated from 'ensembles' of climate model outputs, these are expected to have more robust predictive capability. Ideally, to link the biophysical and social scales, it will be necessary to characterize climate behaviour at spatial scales smaller than those of the current climate model outputs, and to include predictions of surface meteorological extremes which incorporate rainfall as well as temperature change. The challenge of this is ongoing. To gain fully from the improved climate change predictions now available, and to develop associated mitigation and adaptation strategies, well-founded socio-ecological-economic(1) models are required, integrating social and biophysical information to provide holistic insights into alternative possible futures. It is also important that these should be both accessible and relevant to the various users of such information, and presented in a way which is easy to understand and explain. Climate vulnerability assessment is complex, touching on social, cultural and economic factors which need to be combined with the physical aspects of climate change. human modelling in human-in-the-loop systems (HITLS) design can be a complex and dynamic endeavour. Thereby it needs a theoretical framework for grounding methods and models on verified principals and an integrative approach that takes into consideration the specificity of biological organization of living systems, according to the principles of physics, and a coherent way to organize and integrate structural and functional artificial elements. This paper focuses on the rationale of human modelling for HITLS design, in the context of a conceptual framework based on Chauvet's mathematical theory of integrative physiology (MTIP).

Hydrogen is considered as an attractive energy source in the 21 st century and as a fuel to replace conventional fossil fuels. Apart from being a potential source of unlimited clean power, it is also widely used in the chemical process industries and is likely to become a dominant fuel in the transportation sector. Microbial conversion of biomass is a newly developed and unique process, which involves the fermentation of organic substrates such as carbohydrates present in organic wastewater by a consortium of bacteria to produce hydrogen. The study outlined in this paper provides a review of the microbial conversion process and describes the mathematical modelling of the microbial electrolysis cell behaviour in MATLAB.

Vehicle safety has increasingly become an economical factor for vehicle manufacturers and this has become most apparent in car safety [1-4]. Manufacturers are now spending considerable resources on safety research. Government requirements on safety have compelled manufacturers to carry out considerable number of crash tests to validate the safety of their cars [6-7]. The data from these tests is important in the development of simulation models employing finite element (FE) software. Many companies predict crashworthiness using commercially available software such as PAMCARSH and LS-DYNA. These simulations are based on mathematical constitutive equations and hence any simulation created is only as representative as the constitutive equations used. This project has studied the reliability of the material models used by LS-DYNA. Material models selected for analysis are used extensively by impact simulations software and were namely: Power Law Plasticity and Cowper/Symonds. Piecewise Linear Plasticity was also selected because it is based on a true stress/strain and is expected that the simulation would be representative. The models were developed using Belytschko-Lin-Tsay shell elements and were compared with experimental tests employing uni-axial tension strips carried out on three materials - aluminium, high strength steel and mild steel. The tests were carried out using a DARTEC tensile testing machine (up to strain rate of 2.0s(-1)) at UCE in Birmingham. Testing for the higher strain rates (aluminium up to 269.1s(-1), mild steel up to 460s(-1), and high strength steel up to 456.9s(-1)), were carried out at The Royal Military College, Shrivenham using a ROSAND tester.

Existing models of categorization typically represent to-be-classified items as points in a multidimensional space. While from a mathematical point of view, an infinite number of basis sets can be used to represent points in this space, the choice of basis set is psychologically crucial. People generally choose the same basis dimensions - and have a strong preference to generalize along the axes of these dimensions, but not "diagonally". What makes some choices of dimension special? We explore the idea that the dimensions used by people echo the natural variation in the environment. Specifically, we present a rational model that does not assume dimensions, but learns the same type of dimensional generalizations that people display. This bias is shaped by exposing the model to many categories with a structure hypothesized to be like those which children encounter. The learning behaviour of the model captures the developmental shift from roughly "isotropic" for children to the axis-aligned generalization that adults show.

Physically, dynamic regimes of electric transformers are characterized by the variation in time of "electromagnetic status". mathematically, the processes dynamics of electric transformers are described by differential equations which, in most cases, are nonlinear. Based on the mathematical model equations, in this paper will be presented the structural diagrams method, as a modeling method of electric transformers in dynamic regimes. Among others, the benefit derived from the easily conversion of structural diagrams in Matlab-Simulink implementations. Moreover, within the present industrial society the humans further challenges are doubtless related to a sustainable industrial metabolism, integrating industrial activity into ecological systems. By modeling the electrical transformers in dynamic regimes according to an industrial ecosystem pattern, one could provide a holistic view of the interactions and symbiosis interrelationships among human activities, technical systems operation and ecological processes.

Applying computer simulation management experiment method to study the issue of trans-boundary water conflict is proposed in the paper. Based on the thought that the nature of water conflict is strained relations among peoples due to water benefit disputes, a trans-boundary water conflict system is regarded as a complex network system composed of conflict players and the interrelationships among them. So, the paper focuses on the fact that to solve water conflict, to control the human behaviours is the key issue. Therefore, firstly, by reviewing the status quo of water conflict model and the related researches, the existing problems of the present studies are analyzed and the computer simulation management experiment method is proposed to set up a human behaviour model and a water conflict multi-agent system. And then, a framework of trans-boundary water conflict model based on qualitative simulation of human behaviour is designed, including the network graph model of trans-boundary water conflict system, agent behaviour modelling, conflict relationship modelling and the model functions of conflict early warning and control. The framework diagram is given in the paper and the related technologies are pointed out. The paper aims at finding out an effective method to study and solve trans-boundary water conflict on the basis of understanding, early warning and controlling human behaviour in trans-boundary water conflict.
