Accurate mathematical modelling of joints is directly related to the need to obtain a better fundamental understanding of the role that elements of the system have on the dynamic tribological behaviour of the component it represents. Simulation models also make a contribution towards reduction of the cost of in-situ experimentation in biotribological systems, as well as overcoming difficulties with ethical and practical problems related to in-situ testing. The aim of the current work is to report on the results obtained from a dynamic model of a human hip joint. The model is used to investigate the tribological performance of the synovial fluid over a varying range of operating conditions - specifically pressure, temperature and varying load conditions. The model is based on a minimum of empirical relationships, preferring relationships grounded in solid fundamental theory. This reduces the number of parameters that can be modified in the model and ensures that predictions made are not based on external manipulations. Copyright © 2005 by ASME.

Biological treatment is one of most important processes in the purification of wastewater. The activated sludge process is a biological suspended growth system, in which organisms that degrade the pollutants may aggregate to form floc or exist as dispersed cells. A good separation of biomass in the settling tanks is an essential component of the activated sludge treatment system. Poor separation of sludge in the sedimentation tank is the result of the microorganisms's failure to aggregate into floc which can lead to uncontrolled biomass loss, and ultimate failure of the process as the mean solids residence time falls below critical levels. Prediction of these conditions is not possible with the present understanding of the nature of activated sludge and the limited scope of the available mathematical models. modelling is an important part of the design which is used to predict the behaviour of systems. The variables that are involved include kinetic parameters, amount of substrate and location of first microorganism. Development of the system is based on using the Delphi, as an object-oriented (OOP), package. The main objectives of this paper are: (1) the development of an individual floc model starting from a single organism. (2) the development of a mathematical model to investigate the suspended floc growth properties such as substrate utilization and [increasing the number of microorganisms] microorganisms population growth, and growth rate. (3) the development of a multi-species model. (4) the development of a multi-substrate model. The model is concerned with mechanisms involved in formation, substrate reduction, cell growth, and cell death of an activated sludge floc. The model simulates two groups of ammonia oxidizers which are Nitrosomonas and Nitrobacters. While the biomass grows much slower than the rate of substrate diffusion, it is assumed that updating substrate concentration would be demonstrated for a group of cells instead of a single cell. © 2005 C

For human assembly structures in which the mass of the crowd is significant compared to that of the structure, it is necessary to model the passive crowd as an added dynamic system to the structure. Earlier work has been conducted by the authors to analyse the frequency response of a joint crowd-structure system in which the structure is treated as a SDOF system and the passive crowd is modelled as a 2DOF system. It was found that the occupied structure has dynamic properties different from when it is empty. This paper investigates the possibility of representing the joint crowd-SDOF system as an equivalent reduced-DOF system. Two equivalent reduced-DOF systems are investigated - SDOF and 2DOF systems. The errors between the response of the equivalent systems and the full model are calculated and presented in this paper. The results show that the full model exhibits behaviour of a SDOF system for structures with natural frequency less than 4 Hz. For structures above 4 Hz, the equivalent 2DOF system gives a better fit to the full model compared to the equivalent SDOF system.

Chromatographic separation is a pre-eminent downstream processing operation for the isolation of biological products, and has excellent resolution so is almost indispensable in the manufacturing of biopharmaceuticals for human diagnostic and therapeutic purposes. The complexity of chromatographic process dynamics, the large number of parameters involved, most of which depend on the processing materials, pose great challenges for the deriving of operating strategies for achieving maximum process efficiency. To date, the chromatographic process is based on experimentation and iterated to achieve the desired target. However, such trial and error approaches is time consuming and expensive and limits the number of variants which can be tested within the commonly short development time window. This paper uses mathematical modelling, computer simulation and optimisation in order to identify viable cost effective solutions. It allows the integration of process interactions, quantification of process trade-offs and rapid achievement of optimal strategies. A casestudy is given based on the expanded bed hydrophobic interaction chromatographic separation of a liable protein from Saccharomyces cerevisiae cell homogenate. An overall process performance diagram is generated, representing the key process trade-offs that need to be considered during the design and operation of the chromatographic process. This novel approach overcomes the limitation of as experimentally based approach, and provides a powerful tool for the bioprocess engineer for the development of chromatographic separations. ©2005 IEEE.

Conventional computers have been successful for solving many real world problems but the algorithmic requirement limits their usefulness in applications where no exact mathematical relationship between input-output variables can be established. One such problem is the effects of noise pollution on human work efficiency. From the literature survey, it is observed that the human work efficiency depends to a large extent on noise level, type of task, and exposure time. The cause-effect relationships of these parameters are complex and highly non-linear in nature. It is difficult to develop a mathematical model in such situations. Artificial neural network are model-free estimators that do not require articulating a mathematical relationship. They "learn from experience" with numerical data. Hence, an attempt is made in this paper to develop a model for predicting the effects of noise pollution on human work efficiency using neural networks

This paper presents a mixed optimization-simulation approach for modelling of complex water resource systems. This model is associated with the specialized graphical interface WARGI (Water Resources System Optimization Aided by Graphical Interface), already described in previous publications [8], [16], which assists the user during interaction with mathematical codes. WARGI makes it possible to start from the physical system, modify system configuration and related data and process data uncertainty using scenario optimization. The criterion adopted does not limit identification of the system flows only to predefined management rules, which may be obtained through successive optimizations as is done in other water resource simulation models. The mixed approach proposed in the paper uses the simulation model (WARGI-SIM module) to establish "preference-criteria", easily expressed by the user during input phase, and management rules obtained by the results of the optimization phase (WARGI-OPT module). Therefore, the WARGI-SIM module simulates system behaviour along discrete time steps, analysing a limited number of decision making alternatives that can be modified during interaction with the WARGI-OPT optimization module that operates on future scenarios applied to unitary period aggregation. The complete toolkit is still called WARGI and is configured as a user-friendly Decision Support System for complex water resource system analysis. This paper illustrates the application of the toolkit to the Flumendosa-Campidano multi-sector water system in south-eastern Sardinia (Italy).
