This paper presents mathematicalmodelling of a single-link flexible manipulator in vertical plane motion. This extends the previously developed mathematical model for motion in the horizontal plane, where the effects of gravity, rotary inertia and shear deformation were ignored. The dynamic model of the system is obtained using the Lagrange equation. The finite difference method is used to transform this into a discrete formulation. The dynamic behaviour of the system in vertical motion is studied using the developed algorithm. Simulation results of the response of the manipulator are assessed in comparison to corresponding theoretical ones in the time and the frequency domains to verify the accuracy of the algorithm in characterizing the behaviour of the flexible manipulator system.

The objective of this paper is to present a mathematical model of a photoconductive switch, made from a polycrystalline thin layer of CdSSe material, as a solid-state device in the generation of high-voltage sinusoidal waveform at a very low frequency. The paper also presents related experimental set-up and results. The comparison between the modelling and the experiments shows that the model can theoretically display the major behaviour of the switch in analogue applications.

Some recent developments regarding the application of analytical modelling of systems susceptible to interactive buckling are presented. The aim of the current work is to highlight some advantages of mathematicalmodelling for interpreting the mechanical response of practical nonlinear problems in structural engineering and mechanics. Two applications where prestressing is combined with nonlinear instability are presented. The presented cases have been used to validate numerical simulations and allow insights into the fundamental parameters that control large deflection behaviour.

The static and dynamic behaviour of technical systems (e.g. electrical and mechanical systems, systems from the area of chemical and process engineering) and nontechnical systems from the areas as biology, medicine and economics can be described by mathematical models. There exist two general approaches to modelling the theoretical and experimental approach, which both have advantages and disadvantages. This contribution is focused on an identification and modelling of a laboratory equipment by various approaches. Individual approaches were verified and compared with each other.

The design of systems where people and machines interact is an area where engineers work together with psychologists, sociologists, anthropologists, and other social scientists who are experts in the structure and functioning of the cognitive system and the laws of humanbehaviour. Both groups of experts collaborate in designing the machines and the interaction between machines and human beings. In this collaborative work, several assumptions are made, among which one of the more important is that it is possible to model the human cognitive system and its behaviour independently of the context of the interaction because these are assumed to be relatively fixed and only modifiable by evolution and learning processes. Based on this assumption, a methodology is followed in which social scientists model the human cognitive system independently of the context and, based on this modelling, they bring human knowledge into the design process. However, there is evidence that the characteristics and functioning of the human cognitive system are not independent of conditions of interaction. Revisiting this assumption may have important consequences for how we design machines and how humans interact with them. Above all, if the assumption is reviewed, it would mean that it is not possible to expect that the human sciences can model the human cognitive system independently of the context of the interaction. As a consequence of this, cultural aspects of interaction must also be taken into account when modelling the functioning and characteristics of the human cognitive system.

This article presents a new multiphysics modelling approach for cell manipulation by dielectrophoresis. This approach is proposed to model and predict the behavior of particles injected into a microchannel due to the application of an electrical field. The objective of this model is to better characterize microelectronic circuits dedicated to design and implement hybrid systems such as lab-on-chips integrating microelectronics and microfluidic structures. The proposed model allows to determine the required configuration of microelectronic circuits and needed control signals to generate. This model applies primarily to applications using dielectrophoresis cell separation in a microchannel. Then, by using the proposed model, the cell behaviour can be predicted using an advanced multiphysics simulation methode.

The paper reports findings on mathematicalmodelling of ingots of different geometry. It is established that V-shaped cracks concentrated in the ingot bottom are gradually removed through upset, while arch-shaped cracks located around the sedimentation cone top open up. A computer simulation made it possible to calculate efficient deformations in the workpiece axial zone. An alteration of the ingot geometry leads to an increase in efficient deformation and, consequently, a better treatment of axial areas and elimination of the axial defects of the ingot metal.

The organisation management and social science literature are rich in descriptions of models relevant to the software development process. However, even the most prescriptive of these models are not specified with any great degree of formality. Nevertheless, key aspects of these models can be represented using more formal modelling approaches. This, in turn, allows the definition and development of evaluation environments that allow the rapid prototyping of persistent process models which effectively embody technical, organisational, social and human factors. A software engineering process modelling framework is presented. The focus of this work is on behavioural aspects. A feature of the framework is that user views, in a variety of modelling formalisms, may be extracted from a common, highly-abstracted conceptual model. Examples of 'user views' represented and implemented in Prolog and a systems dynamics modelling tool are presented.

humanbehaviour has significant impact on the performance of any project. Software projects are no exception. This paper presents a research plan to develop combined agent-based and system dynamics models to simulate software development process focusing on the behaviour of team members in a software project environment. The outcome of such research work can be used to explore the relationships between various factors, such as workload, stress, attitude, management approach, organisation process, as well as individual and team performance. It can also be used as a tool to help managers of software organisations to understand the importance of human aspects, and make better human resource management decisions for improved project performance.

"Go to the ant, ... consider its ways and be wise!" (Proverbs 6:6). We have progressed using biomimicry to inform our engineering designs and processes. Yet we have learnt very little in finding our inspiration from nature for leading in our complex world. In nature, those species that learn by observing, listening, making sense, internalising, thinking, and resting at the right time, survive and thrive in their environments - on plains, in mountains, in the bush, rivers, oceans, deserts, and the sky. Fight or flight takes place in both nature and business. Challenges are shared in coexistence, patience, perseverance, resilience, and adaptation. Leadership challenges that are emerging in the new world of human and machine coexistence will also be enriched by lessons from nature that inspire new behaviour, that are not conceived in business schools or legacy cultures, but that are flexible, effective, and work efficiently - as natural solutions have done for millennia. We discuss the makings of a conceptual thought model of leadership inspired by nature. It is a starting point to create an awareness of how nature-inspired leadership may be applied. Yet, when modelling anything on nature, one has to realise that all models are simplifications, which means that nature itself, as a complex system, is not fully understood. Our aim should not be to copy nature, but to extract principles from it.
