This paper aims at developing a new methodology based on finite element (FE) techniques with a combination of several other methods to extend the component-based design philosophy of EC3 to the cyclic behaviour of end plate connection. In the first part, the experimental procedure for studying the behaviour of an isolated T-stub as the main component of an end plate connection under monotonic and cyclic loading is presented. The second part comprises the four steps necessary to build the analytical model. Firstly the monotonic and secondly the cyclic FE models of these specimens are discussed and validated. Then, a mathematical energy balance model is developed to reproduce the cyclic response. This model is the basis of a mechanical model which predicts the behaviour of a T-stub which constitutes the main component of connections. With these data, a spring model is used to predict the moment rotation curve for an isolated end plate connection. (C) 2000 Civil-Comp Ltd and Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

The aim of this paper is to present a method to generate computational, geometric models of 3D objects defined in the form of a 'cloud of points' (CoP). These objects can then be discretized for subsequent finite element analyses. Various procedures required to achieve this are briefly described, including the mathematical representation pf an integrated image acquisition/modelling system, which allows for the automatic creation of accurate geometric models of either scanned images of objects or of CoP generally, as well as the mesh generation algorithm employed. The application of this combined method is then demonstrated with respect to modellinghuman organs and agricultural objects. The main emphasis of the paper is on the wide applicability of the developed techniques. (C) 2000 Civil-Comp Ltd. and Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

Glass reinforced plastic (GRP) pipes are increasingly being used in the offshore industry and their behaviour in fire is studied using mathematical and numerical modelling. The thermochemical response of a single-skinned GRP pipe exposed to hydrocarbon fires is modelled using the finite element technique. Axi-symmetric mathematical and numerical models are developed to quantify the fire performance of thin-walled and large diameter GRP pipes for seawater transport. The mathematical model is based on one-dimensional models developed for single-skinned GRP pipes and panels and include: (i) transient heat conduction;(ii) radial gas mass movement;(iii) mass loss and Arrhenius rate decomposition of resin material and (iv) endothermicity of the decomposition process. The numerical results are presented for a polyester-based GRP pipe with flowing seawater and thickness 1.09cm and compared with those for GRP panels and pipes with the same thicknesses but different boundary conditions. It is shown that for a given set of dimensions and boundary conditions, GRP pipes reach insulation failure (time to 160 degrees C) earlier than GRP panels. The results can be used, in conjunction with the author's previous work (Looyeh & Bettess, 1996), to assess the feasibility of using GRP for offshore pipes and pipelines where severe fire conditions may occur.

In order to simulate the environmental dispersion and behaviour of effluent discharges from offshore oil and gas installations, a model has been developed to simulate the physical mixing behaviour of neutrally and positively buoyant plumes. The mathematical foundations of a Langevin based model capable of representing three phase (initial mixing, dynamic buoyancy collapse and ambient turbulence) dispersion are described. An initial asymptotic analysis is presented as part of a laboratory and field calibration process.

In order to display huge scenes with virtual human inhabitants evolving inside a virtual city, we propose a methodology to create and manage different Level of Detail for a well-segmented scene without "re-meshing" the scene during simulation. A database dedicated to urban life simulation providing data for planning human actions and behaviour is completed such a way to furnish information about the most adapted displayed representations.

This paper considers the differences between users with motion-impairments and able-bodied users when they interact with computers and the implications for user models. Most interface design and usability assessment practices are based on explicit or implicit models of user behaviour. This paper studies the applicability of an existing interface design user model to motion-impaired users for the relatively straightforward task of button activation. A discussion of the empirical results is provided and the paper concludes that there are significant differences between the behaviour of motion-impaired users and the accepted modelling theory.

A mathematical model is developed to simulate the hydraulic behaviour and the biodegradation process in a landfill site. The model incorporates governing equations that describe processes influencing the leachate production and the biochemical processes taking place during the stabilisation of organic wastes, including leachate flow, hydrolysis, acidogenic, and methanogenesis. The model considers the significant changes in moisture distribution and leachate quality that may occur during the operational period of the landfill. The model results are compared with the leachate production, chloride concentration, BOD, pH, and methane production data from Keele Valley Landfill in Ontario, Canada. Encouraging agreement has been observed between the real landfill data and the model results.

Description of off-design behaviour of axial compressors is possible only by their characteristics. An overall picture of compressor off-design performance can be built up from consideration of behaviour of individual stages and the interaction between a series of stages. In practice it is often necessary to determine characteristics of already manufactured compressors by calculation. In these cases the above mentioned method is not applicable, because of absence of detailed stage characteristics, unknown the distortion of velocity field, and the processes occurs as a result of interaction the stages. The paper deals with a simplified method of calculation of off-design operational modes using few initial data. The method applies the laws what the known between parameters on the line of optimal operational modes, the analogy between corrected number of revolution curves of multistage compressor characteristics and stage characteristics.
