This paper presents a novel study of the dynamic performance analysis of an advanced static VAr compensator (ASVC) using three-level voltage source inverter. The analysis is based on the modelling of the system in the d-q axis. The dynamic behaviour of the system is analysed using PSpice through a set of simulation tests. The results obtained may lead to correct design of a robust controller for reactive power applications.

It is necessary, to an increasing extent, to take controllers and control loops into consideration in mathematicalmodelling and simulations for power quality studies. DC arc furnaces belong to those electric loads which network behaviour is essentially influenced by control processes. Rated at more than 100 MVA, these furnaces cause voltage fluctuations and harmonics in the HV power system. Based on experiences of onsite measurements at several plants, a mathematical furnace model was completed by implementing phase lock-loop and DC current control loops. The paper shows what influence is exerted to harmonics and flicker severity by the DC furnace current control. Case study calculations are compared to measurement results. It is shown that it is not sufficient to simplify or neglect the control loops in such cases.

Interactive system design requires good descriptive systems, and the development of tools to support it. In particular, models and notations are required for describing user tasks, and for describing the structure of the human-computer dialogue to support these tasks. These descriptions should ideally be linked. The paper reviews task and dialogue models, and describes how the divide between the two can be bridged via the Lean Cuisine+ notation, which is a semi-formal graphical notation for describing the behaviour of event based direct manipulation GUIs. The notation is placed in a wider context by reference to the system development life cycle and the unified modelling language (UML).

Presents theoretical and experimental investigations into the dynamic modelling and characterisation of a flexible manipulator system. A constrained planar single-link flexible manipulator is considered. A dynamic model of the system is developed based on finite element methods incorporating structural damping. Performance of the algorithm in describing the dynamic behaviour of the system is assessed in comparison to an experimental test-rig in the time and frequency domains.

This paper addresses the complexity of modelling drivers behaviour by the adoption of agent-based techniques. As human factors are central to intelligent transportation systems (ITS), it has became imperative to consider the uncertainty and variability inherent in drivers' behaviour for simulation frameworks aimed at assessing ITS technologies. An agent-based extension to an existing microscopic simulation model, DRACULA, is suggested which aims at benefiting from characteristics such as reasoning capabilities and autonomy, offered by agent-based approaches. The scope of this work is particularly concerned with the departure time and route choice processes in a commuter scenario.

In this paper, we consider an aspect of the intra-specific brood-parasitism with a mathematicalmodelling. As in case of moorhen Gallinula chloropus, the case dealt with in this paper in such that just a part of:the whole population has the parasitising behaviour against the individuals belonging to another part of non-parasite subpopulation that does not have such behaviour. Analysing the expected fitness gain from the brood-parasitism, we consider the condition in order that parasite individuals coexist with nonparasite ones within a population. From the mathematicalmodelling analysis, it is shown that the stable equilibrium frequency of parasite individuals within a population, if exists, depends on the difference among individuals in terms of the individual quality reflected to the survival probability of bred offsprings. The objective of this study is to characterise the two-phase flow hydrodynamic behaviour of a rectangular air-lift loop reactor. The local and global gas hold-up, the global liquid circulation velocity, and the bubbles diameter, were measured and correlated to the superficial gas velocity or the pressure drop created by the gas sparger. The influence of geometrical and operating parameters was also studied. Then, a mathematical model was developed to predict the average gas hold-up (respectively, in the riser and the downcomer), and the global liquid circulation velocity. It was validated with experimental data. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

This paper presents a simulation model of the human respiratory system. A combination out of well proved mathematical equations on one hand and an extended rule base on the other enables the dynamic simulation of several interactions of the respiratory system. For the implementation of the rule base a finite state machine technique had been used. The derived comprehensive simulation model is used to study and analyze the respiratory dynamics for teaching purposes.

The simulation of a reverse-flow operation of a fixed-bed catalytic reactor, where the highly exothermal partial oxidation of o-xylene to phthalic anhydride is processed, is accomplished by using a heterogeneous one-dimensional model, which accounts for mass transport by diffusion and convection inside large-pore catalytic particles. The dynamic behaviour of the reactor is analysed by varying the inlet conditions and the switching period. This work. points out the benefits that can arise from the use of the reverse-flow operation, namely the decrease of the hot-spot temperature and the more favourable temperature distribution along the bed. In spite of the lower temperature profiles, the final conversion, as well as selectivity and yield of phthalic anhydride are not. significantly affected. The results predicted by the heterogeneous model with intraparticle convection and diffusion, HT,, model, are compared with those obtained when diffusion is the only transport mechanism inside the catalyst, HT, model. A comparison with the simple pseudo-homogeneous model, PH, is also achieved. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.
