Theoretical flaw-response modelling programs are used to simulate ultrasonic flow detection and provide a cheap and fast alternative to test-piece trials during the Inspection Qualification (IQ) process. The selection of the most appropriate model for a given test scenario requires a high level of technical expertise, necessitating the use of a qualified NDT engineer. Moreover, due to the heterogeneous nature of these models, integration with other NDT software tools can be difficult and requires the user to be responsible for data management within the system. The multi-agent system (MAS) utilises intelligent software agents capable of autonomous behaviour and decision-making skills in order to create a single software environment to provide support for IQ. The motivation behind this MAS approach, the design and implementation of the agents and the benefits offered by the MAS will be described. A test scenario of a multi-agent IQ will be used to demonstrate the potential advantages offered by this novel systems approach. Specifically, the contribution of these modelling agents to the overall system and their interactions with other tools to automate the IQ process will be addressed.

This paper is devoted to simulation of curvilinear movement of high-speed tracked vehicles driven by human operators with different qualification. The mathematical model of the high-speed tracked vehicle's movement with provisions for description of a human operator is reduced. A skill level reflecting probability of faultless work of the human operator is chosen as an estimate criterion. This probability is unambiguously defined by the correction coefficient value depending not on training duration, as usual, but by results of total qualification tests (so-called degree of proficiency of the human operator). Results of simulation of the high-speed tracked vehicle's control system prove that the management quality depends on the qualification of the human operator. That is an indirect confirmation of adequacy of the offered human operator simulation model based on the Mamdani's Expert system.

The performance of a cyber-physical system (CPS) is affected by many factors, however the impact of human performance on a CPS is often overlooked. modelling and simulation play an important role in understanding CPSs, and co-simulation offers a way to easily incorporate human performance models into co-models of CPSs. This paper demonstrates an initial human performance model in the form of a train driver model in the railway domain. The model is linked to models of the rolling stock and movement authority using the Functional Mock-up Interface (FMI). Initial results are presented and a discussion of future directions for the work.

In this paper we discuss two projects looking at applying advanced abstraction mechanisms from software engineering to the field of physiological modelling. We focus on two abstraction mechanisms commonly found in modern object-oriented programming languages: generics and inheritance. Generics allows classes to take other classes as parameters, allowing common behaviour to be described with particularities abstracted away. We demonstrate this technique on an example from heart modelling. Inheritance allows one to reuse code and to establish a subtype of an existing object. We focus on the benefits reaped from inheritance where this property enables run-time substitutability. This technique is demonstrated within the context of multi-scale tumour modelling. Finally, we look at how combining both techniques enables greater modularity and the construction of a model driven framework for the rapid creation and extension of families of biological models.

Hydrogen is considered as an attractive energy source in the 21 st century and as a fuel to replace conventional fossil fuels. Apart from being a potential source of unlimited clean power, it is also widely used in the chemical process industries and is likely to become a dominant fuel in the transportation sector. Microbial conversion of biomass is a newly developed and unique process, which involves the fermentation of organic substrates such as carbohydrates present in organic wastewater by a consortium of bacteria to produce hydrogen. The study outlined in this paper provides a review of the microbial conversion process and describes the mathematicalmodelling of the microbial electrolysis cell behaviour in MATLAB.

Fused deposition modelling (FDM) is an extrusion based Rapid prototyping (RP) technique which can be used to fabricate tissue engineering scaffolds. The present work focuses on the study of the melt flow behaviour (MFB) of Poly-epsilon-caprolactone (PCL) as a representative biomaterial, on the FDM. The MFB significantly affects the quality of the scaffold which depends not only on the pressure gradient, its velocity, and the temperature gradients but also physical properties like the melt temperature and rheology. The MFB is studied using two methods: mathematicalmodelling and finite element analysis (FEA) using Ansys (R). The MFB is studied using accurate channel geometry by varying filament velocity at the entry and by varying nozzle diameters and angles at the exit. The comparative results of both mathematicalmodelling and FEA suggest that the pressure drop and the velocities of the melt flow depend on the flow channel parameters. One inference of particular interest is the temperature gradient of the PCL melt, which shows that it liquefies within 35% of the channel length. These results are invaluable to better understand the MFB of biomaterials that affects the quality of the scaffold built via FDM and can also be used to predict the MFB of other biomaterials.
