In this paper, we investigate human perception of the difference tone by two ultrasonic sounds. Although it has been generally agreed that the difference tone is a sound which does not exist physically but only in human subjective feelings, we doubt its truth. We therefore derive the human perception model for such tone and verify the model by physiological experiments using the magnetoencephalography (MEG).

Many common chronic diseases operate at the intersection of metabolic and cardiovascular dysfunction. In order to model the effects of these diseases and investigate underlying causes we are developing a cardiomyocyte model which incorporates both the mechanics and metabolic factors that underlie work done by the heart. In this paper we present the first experimental results from our study measuring mechanical properties in human cardiac trabeculae, including the effect of inorganic phosphate (Pi) on the complex modulus at 37 degrees C. Extending our previous mathematical model, we have developed a computationally efficient model of cardiac crossbridge mechanics which is sensitive to changes in cellular Pi. This extended model was parameterised with human cardiac complex modulus data. It captured the changes to cardiac mechanics following an increase in Pi concentration that we measured experimentally, including a reduced elastic modulus and a right-shift in frequency. The human cardiac trabecula we studied had a low sensitivity to Pi compared to what has been previously reported in mammalian cardiac tissue, which suggests that the muscle may have cellular compensatory mechanisms to cope with elevated Pi levels. This study demonstrates the feasibility of our experimental-modelling pipeline for future investigation of mechanical and metabolic effects in the diseased human heart.

Urban planning practice and architectural design increasingly adopt agent-based models and simulations to support decision-making for spatial design. Nonetheless, although essential, a reliable representation of human spatial behaviour in a socially rich context is still challenging. The study presents a framework built on a Dynamic Network Visualization of space use patterns based on a Post Occupancy Evaluation in the case study of a hospital ward, which is intended to develop an agent-based spatial analysis. A functional and organizational redesign of the ward plan is proposed following the analysis of social and spatial behaviour of agents. The outlined methodology aims to prepare the development of a multi-agent software simulation to validate the proposed redesign from a human-centred perspective. Findings indicate the relevance of the proposed approach starting from organizational contexts with complex workflows where cooperation between agents is widely exist, such as in healthcare environments. The framework is structured as a methodology to support the practice of architectural design and urban planning for the realization of more efficient and sustainable cities.

Performance of electronic sensors used for physical measurements is highly depends upon the operating conditions. Environmental changes e.g., temperature variations do affect the sensor outputs especially for those which are used for very precise measurement. The effect of temperature variation from ambient to the harsh drastically degrades the electronic sensor output performance e.g., piezoelectric sensor in our case. It is very hard to model the output variation of piezoelectric sensor whose output is non-deterministic or random in nature and it also change with temperature. Normal mathematicalmodelling techniques to correct error are very difficult to implement due to complexity and nonlinearity. Data has been acquired from piezoelectric sensor used for pressure measurement whose output variation is random in nature with respect to the temperature variations. The scope of this paper is to study the behaviour of piezoelectric sensor output signal taking into consideration the different varying temperature profiles. Artificial intelligence technique like Fuzzy is used to minimize the error up to desirable amount. The novelty in our work is that Fuzzy approach has been implemented on this kind of engineering problem. Results have been compared with mathematical technique i.e., curve fitting based upon the error correction criterion. Fuzzy approach has shown significant improvement in error minimization of piezoelectric sensor as compared to the mathematical techniques.
