Multi-agent systems (MAS) are driving the way to design and engineer control solutions that exhibit flexibility, adaptation and reconfigurability, which are important advantages over traditional centralized systems. The understanding, design and testing of such distributed agent-based approaches, and particularly those exhibiting self-* properties, are usually a hard task. Simulation assumes a crucial role to analyse the behaviour of MAS solutions during the design phase and before its deployment into the real operation. Particularly, Agent-Based modelling (ABM) tools are well suited to simulate MAS systems that exhibit complex phenomena, like emergent behaviour and self-organization. This paper discusses the simulation of agent-based manufacturing systems and introduces the advantages of using ABM tools. The NetLogo platform is used to illustrate the benefits of such tools in the manufacturing world on the specification of a MAS system for a washing machine production line.

This present paper deals with mathematicalmodelling of the crane's mechanical, hydraulic, and control systems as well as the numerical simulation of offshore cranes performing sealift operations. The simulations are performed by FEDEM - a general non-linear dynamic analysis program for flexible multibody systems. The pedestal, the revolving crane superstructure called crane king, and the boom are flexible links modelled by shell finite elements and connected together by different joints. A mathematical model of the hydraulic system and a control system is implemented in the mechanism model, making it possible to realistically control the operation of the crane. The results from the dynamic simulations verify that the virtual crane gives a very good picture of the dynamic behaviour of the real crane in offshore environment. This study shows how dynamic amplification can be reduced by proper operation and design of the hydraulic and control system. Simulation examples are shown for sealift from supply vessel when both the supply vessel and the FPSO (Floating Production, Storage and Offloading vessel) are subjected to wave induced forces.

Authorization infrastructures are an integral part of any network where resources need to be protected. As organisations start to federate access to their resources, authorization infrastructures become increasingly difficult to manage, to a point where relying only on human resources becomes unfeasible. In our work, we propose a Self-Adaptive Authorization Framework (SAAF) that is capable of monitoring the usage of resources, and controlling access to resources through the manipulation of authorization assets (e.g., authorization policies, access rights and sessions), due to the identification of abnormal usage. As part of this work, we explore the use of models for facilitating the autonomic management of federated authorization infrastructures by 1) classifying access behaviour exhibited by users, 2) modelling authorization assets, including usage, for identifying abnormal behaviour, and 3) managing authorization through the adaptation and reflection of modelled authorization assets. SAAF will be evaluated by integrating it into an existing authorization infrastructure that would allow the simulation of abnormal usage scenarios.

Organic PV cells have gained tremendous attention in recent years for its advantage of having tailored molecular properties and economic manufacturing process. Along with the rigorous and rapid researches progressing in the field of organic photovoltaic cells, accurate modelling of organic PV cells has gained extreme importance. Hence in this paper, modelling of organic solar photovoltaic cells based on an improved reverse double diode model is presented. Apart from all other complex mathematical models available in literature, the modelling is performed by introducing simple circuit equations. Furthermore, the model is highly capable of realizing the ideal and non-ideal current-voltage characteristics of an organic PV cell. The eight unknown parameters of the model are extracted using Genetic Algorithm(GA) and the extracted parameters are used to predict the I-V characteristics of a nay-100 organic solar cell. The main aim of this paper is to study the behaviour of organic solar cells and to realize an accurate PV model to replicate the exact I-V characteristics. (C) 2017 The Authors. Friction Stir Welding (FSW) is a relatively new solid-state joining technique, which is versatile, environment friendly, and energy and time efficient. For a comprehensive understanding of the effects of process conditions, such as tool rotation speed and traverse speed, on characterisations of welded materials, it is essential to establish prediction models for different aspects of the materials' behaviours. Because of the high complexity of the FSW process, it is often difficult to derive accurate and yet transparent enough mathematical models. In such a situation, a systematic data-driven fuzzy modelling approach is developed and implemented in this paper to model FSW behaviour relating to AA5083 aluminium alloy, consisting of microstructural features, mechanical properties, as well as overall weld quality. This methodology allows constructing transparent fuzzy models considering both accuracy and interpretability attributes of fuzzy systems. The elicited models proved to be accurate, interpretable and robust and can be further applied to facilitate the optimal design of process parameters, with the aim of finding the optimal combinations of process parameters to achieve desired welding properties.

A rapid growth in the smart-wearable industry is making it increasingly important to cater to the Quality of Experience (QoE) requirements of the end-users. In this work, we try to model the relationship between human experience and quality perception in relation to the smart-wearable segment. For this, the concepts of Quality of Data (QoD) and Quality of Information (Qol) are used. Step-counts and heart-rate measurement readings by the wearables are the parameters considered for evaluating the QoD, whereas perceived ease of use, perceived usefulness, and richness in information are the ones taken for evaluating the QoI. A subjective experiment comprising of 40 participants and 5 wearable devices is performed in a free-living condition in order to create the QoE model. We hypothesize QoE to be a function of QoD, and Qol and use a balanced weight technique to formulate the final model. R-2 and adjusted-R-2 values of 0.65 and 0.63 indicate a reasonable predictive power of the proposed scheme. Based upon the results appropriate recommendations are provided to the different smart-wearable vendors for improving their products, thereby ensuring a greater user-adoption.

Emergency evacuation is an important issue in fire safety. In this study, a cellular automaton (CA) model in which the humanbehaviour termed 'flow with the stream' is considered is proposed to simulate the procedure of emergency evacuation. Based on the CA model, the influence of the number of guiders to the evacuation from a large compartment is analyzed through numerical test. The result shows that the proposed CA model is a promising tool that may be used in fire safety design.
