Poroelastic materials are essential for engineers to improve the sound and vibration properties of a product. The most common mathematical model that describes the vibro-acoustic behaviour of these materials is the Biot theory, which considers the fully coupled behaviour of a homogenised solid phase, based on the structural skeleton, and a homogenised fluid phase, describing the inter-penetrating fluid. This paper focuses on an efficient implementation of poroelastic materials using the finite element method. Owing to the presence of several wave solutions, namely, two compressional wave types and one shear wave type, it is difficult to define clear meshing guidelines for poroelastics modeling a priori and trial and errors is required to ensure reliable results. Multiple scales may be present, and local resonance phenomena may significantly modify the resolution requirements in certain frequency bands. In order to remedy this, and to be able to deliver a (nearly) mesh-independent solution, a physics based adaptivity rule is developed which determines the distribution of (directional) element orders at each frequency, prior to the calculation, in order to reach a user-defined target accuracy. The resulting approach is applied to a system-level vibro-acoustic application case with a poroelastic material treatment.

The rapid increase in penetration of electric vehicle (EVs) will turn parking lots (PLs) into a charging stations. PLs associated with workplace/ shopping centre/ homes will be the most convenient spots for EV owners to charge their vehicles. However, EVs are moveable load, and it is challenging to predict its usage pattern, charging/discharging behaviour and availability in the PLs. This work proposes a probabilistic model to estimate the aggregated charging demand and available energy storage capacity of EVs while considering its usage, driving style and travel patterns and battery degradation. The proposed model is based on mathematical formulations that suggest definite improvement with the existing models in terms of accurate estimation of EV charging load and its available energy storage capacity. We concluded that by enabling vehicle to grid, the parking lots equipped with EV chargers would be the key energy resource for the virtual power plant. © 2020 IEEE.

Remote human Activity Recognition (HAR) in a private residential area has a beneficial influence on the elderly population's life, since this group of people require regular monitoring of health conditions. This paper addresses the problem of continuous detection of daily human activities using mm-wave Doppler radar. Unlike most previous research, this work records the data in terms of continuous series of activities rather than individual activities. These series of activities are similar to real-life activity patterns. The Dynamic Time Warping (DTW) algorithm is used for the detection of human activities in the recorded time series of data and compared to other time-series classification methods. DTW requires less amount of labelled data. The input for DTW was provided using three strategies, and the obtained results were compared against each other. The first approach uses the pixel-level data of frames (named UnSup-PLevel). In the other two strategies, a Convolutional Variational Autoencoder (CVAE) is used to extract Un-Supervised Encoded features (UnSup-EnLevel) and Supervised Encoded features (Sup-EnLevel) from the series of Doppler frames. Results demonstrates the superiority of the Sup-EnLevel features over UnSup-EnLevel and UnSup-PLevel strategies. However, the performance of the UnSup-PLevel strategy worked surprisingly well without using annotations.

Understanding how cell fate is determined when exposed to extreme stresses such as heat shock is critical in biomedical systems. It has long been understood that exposure of cells to high temperature typically protect themselves with a heat shock response (HSR), where accumulation of denatured or unfolded proteins triggers the synthesis of heat shock proteins (HSPs) through the heat shock transcription factor, e.g., heat shock factor 1 (HSF1). Recent experimental work has also shown that protein posttranslational modifications (PTMs) such as SUMOylation play crucial roles in cellular responses to heat shock. As a complementary approach to the current experimental methodologies, in this study we aim to develop a mathematical model of SUMOylation-development synergism of HSR for the purpose of studying the dynamical behaviour of HSR quantitatively. The structure of our dynamical model is derived mostly from mass action kinetics while the model parameters are optimized by using a genetic algorithm (GA) based data-driven approach. The preliminary results show GA based data-driven approach has potentials for our modelling purpose. © 2020 ACM.

Understanding the human hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis presents a major challenge for medical science. Dysregulation of the HPG axis is linked to infertility and a thorough understanding of its dynamic behaviour is necessary to both aid diagnosis and to identify the most appropriate hormonal interventions. Here, we review how quantitative models are being used in the context of clinical reproductive endocrinology to: 1. analyse the secretory patterns of reproductive hormones;2. evaluate the effect of drugs in fertility treatment;3. aid in the personalization of assisted reproductive technology (ART). In this review, we demonstrate that quantitative models are indispensable tools enabling us to describe the complex dynamic behaviour of the reproductive axis, refine the treatment of fertility disorders, and predict clinical intervention outcomes. © 2022 The Author(s)

Aspiration thrombectomy is a life-saving interventional procedure to remove a blood clot from the brain of stroke patients. The pressure and blood flow dynamics during this procedure are crucial in determining the clinical outcomes. A mathematical model based on Hagen-Poiseuille law of fluid flow in a tube is adapted to simulate the pressure and fluid flow characteristics in an in vitro model of an occluded and unoccluded cerebrovascular network that mimics a poor (unilateral) and good (symmetrical) collateral flow within the Circle of Willis. The results show that in the absence of an occlusion, the pressure and pressure drop are higher in the symmetrical network compared to that in the unilateral network. This is due to the additional limb in the symmetrical network that must be supplied, which is absent in the unilateral network. In the presence of an occlusion, the flow reduces in the obstructed vessel, the collateral flow, overall pressure and pressure drop increases in both systems, but is higher for the symmetrical network. The results compare qualitatively with those observed in in vitro studies and with clinical observations. The theoretical framework lays the foundation for more advanced models for the pressure and blood flow dynamics towards clinical applicability. © 2021 Institute of Physics Publishing. Motivated by the increasing number of COVID-19 cases that have been observed in many countries after the vaccination and relaxation of non-pharmaceutical interventions, we propose a mathematical model on time-varying networks for the spread of recurrent epidemic diseases in a partially vaccinated population. The model encapsulates several realistic features, such as the different effectiveness of the vaccine against transmission and development of severe symptoms, testing practices, the possible implementation of non-pharmaceutical interventions to reduce the transmission, isolation of detected individuals, and human behaviour. Using a mean-field approach, we analytically derive the epidemic threshold of the model and, if the system is above such a threshold, we compute the epidemic prevalence at the endemic equilibrium. These theoretical results show that precautious human behaviour and effective testing practices are key toward avoiding epidemic outbreaks. Interestingly, we found that, in many realistic scenarios, vaccination is successful in mitigating the outbreak by reducing the prevalence of seriously ill patients, but it could be a double-edged sword, whereby in some cases it might favour resurgent outbreaks, calling for higher testing rates, more cautiousness and responsibility among the population, or the reintroduction of non-pharmaceutical interventions to achieve complete eradication. human-machine collaboration (HMC) has been a growing trend in research and real-world implementation. Many manufacturers started to integrate the robot into their production line and able to collaborate with the human. The aim is to boost the production system performances by taking advantages of both human and robot. However, the human-machine collaboration required a comprehensive design to make sure the system run well, thus enhance the production system productivity and efficiency. This paper elaborated a human-machine collaboration design for a cartoys assembly line. The design is modelled by using discrete event simulation (DES) approach. The simulation goal to give picture and prediction regarding system performances and behaviour from the HMC assembly line design. Several sequencing rules are applied to the system's resources. Comparison between sequencing rules and Pareto Frontier analysis are conducted in the study to give insight regarding the system performance and to obtain the preferable sequencing rules that applied to the resources. The result is sequencing rules provide a significant effect on system performances such as resources utilization, throughput, and flow time. The most preferable sequencing rule for the assembly line has been identified. © 2020 Association for Computing Machinery.

Solar photovoltaic (PV) panels are subject to inefficiencies from panel soiling and high temperatures. A system is proposed to eliminate these sources by integrating PV generation with a compressed air system. The stored high-pressure air can be used to blow over the surface of the panels, removing present particles and providing a convective cooling effect, increasing overall generation efficiency. A mathematical model of the charging process of the proposed system has been derived, comprising of PV generation, a DC-DC boost converter, DC motor, air compressor and air tank. Closed-loop PID control has been implemented to control the duty cycle of the boost converter to maintain a constant voltage supply to the motor, given a variable voltage source from PV generation. The control has shown to be effective in the extreme cases of change in input radiation to the PV panels. It is expected this work can aid in the further design and development of the integrated PV-compressed air system for cooling and cleaning. © 2021 Chinese Automation and Computing Society in the UK-CACSUK.

In today's aging society special attention is devoted to the research of human balance control. Our research group focuses on understanding the control mechanism of the brain during balancing from an engineering point of view. The model of stick balancing is derived and the dynamical behaviour of the mechanical system is investigated numerically. The control force is modelled as a PD controller with predictor feedback without implementation uncertainty, which allows perfect delay compensation. However, the sensory dead zone of human perception is also accounted for in the model and thus, a delayed switchingtype controller is applied. After deriving the mechanical model, numerical analysis is carried out in order to investigate the effect of time delay and the size of sensory dead zones. Copyright © 2020 ASME.
