Applicability of tricycle modelling in the simulation of aircraft steering system 1

Aircraft nose wheel steering system is simulated on MATLAB–Simulink platform to understand the influence of tyre–ground interaction and aircraft ground dynamics on the steering behaviour of the aircraft. The aircraft steering systemmodel generally includes the Nose Landing gear model, Aircraft Dynamics model and Tyre model. In most of the literature, bicycle modelling method is adapted with two main gears lumped together and a nose landing gear, whereas tricycle modelling method with all the three gears is more appropriate and accurate way of predicting the aircraft steering response. In the present work, the mathematical formulation for the tricyclemodel is developed and it is observed that the resultant equations are nonlinear and coupled, whereas the bicycle model is represented with linear and coupled equations. For the same inputs parameters, both tricycle and bicycle models are simulated. Results obtained from both the models are within 5% difference with the introduction of additional non-linearity in the tricycle modelling. Hence for aircraft with nosewheel steering, bicyclemethod is sufficient for predicting steering response but for the all-wheel steering system (steering on both nose and main landing gear), it is more appropriate to use the tricycle modelling method to predict the accurate steering response. © Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2020.

Understanding the human balancing is a fundamental question. Investigation of simple tasks can help in this challenging problem. In order to describe the nature of the underlying control mechanism, first of all, the balancing force has to be determined. As a second step one can identify the behaviour of the controller. There are two main problems in the model of the whole control process of balancing, time-delay is unknown and the exact mathematical definition of the control goal is also not known. The explanation for this latter issue the classical inverted pendulum model has 2DoF but only one control forces exists, thus it can be handled as a typical underactuated mechanical system. In underactuated systems the task of inverse dynamics is not well defined. Some degrees-of-freedom cannot directly be controlled, and the corresponding generalized coordinates depend on the system dynamics only. In this study we model the control mechanism as a time periodically (i.e. clock-driven) switched controller. We investigate the stability properties of the closed-loop system. We show a periodically switched controlled which can be a possible model of human balancing.

In this study, a conceptual mathematical model for the refractory and isolating lining of high temperature installations is deduced based on system constraints. Model's decomposition leads to a bi-level objective having discrete optimization task with higher number of layers of compositions. Solutions are generated by a series of lower layers and multiple-objective optimization in accordance with a hierarchical participative structure. Graphical modelling of case study is developed with AutoLisp and OpenDCL for AutoCAD, which allows, for each refractory lining's proposal generation. The user's application and the associated graphic information among other possibilities allows to evaluate factors that could not be included in the model used for the solution of the original task. A novel heuristic approach is developed in the frame of the Integration Variables Method called "Exploration of Variables Codes (EVC)". The results of EVC are numerically compared with the ones obtained using the elitist genetic algorithm approach "Non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm II (NSGA II)" for the same model's structure. The optimized results demonstrate the higher solutions diversity, that facilitates the human-machine interaction procedures associated to develop the optimized solution.

The performance of colon-targeted solid dosage forms is commonly assessed using standardised pharmacopeial dissolution apparatuses like the USP II or the miniaturised replica, the mini-USP II. However, these fail to replicate the hydrodynamics and shear stresses in the colonic environment, which is crucial for the tablet's drug release process. In this work, computer simulations are used to create a digital twin of a dissolution apparatus and to develop a method to create a digital twin of a tablet that behaves realistically. These models are used to investigate the drug release profiles and shear rates acting on a tablet at different paddle speeds in the mini-USP II and biorelevant colon models to understand how the mini-USP II can be operated to achieve more realistic (i.e., in vivo) hydrodynamic *** behaviour of the tablet and the motility patterns used in the simulations are derived from experimental and in vivo data, respectively, to obtain profound insights into the tablet's disintegration/drug release processes. We recommend an "on-off" operating mode in the mini-USP II to generate shear rate peaks, which would better reflect the in vivo conditions of the human colon instead of constant paddle speed.

Understanding how cell fate is determined when exposed to extreme stresses such as heat shock is critical in biomedical systems. It has long been understood that exposure of cells to high temperature typically protect themselves with a heat shock response (HSR), where accumulation of denatured or unfolded proteins triggers the synthesis of heat shock proteins (HSPs) through the heat shock transcription factor, e.g., heat shock factor 1 (HSF1). Recent experimental work has also shown that protein posttranslational modifications (PTMs) such as SUMOylation play crucial roles in cellular responses to heat shock. As a complementary approach to the current experimental methodologies, in this study we aim to develop a mathematical model of SUMOylation-development synergism of HSR for the purpose of studying the dynamical behaviour of HSR quantitatively. The structure of our dynamical model is derived mostly from mass action kinetics while the model parameters are optimized by using a genetic algorithm (GA) based data-driven approach. The preliminary results show GA based data-driven approach has potentials for our modelling purpose.

Over the past decade, studying animal behaviour with the help of computer vision has become more popular. Replacing human observers by computer vision lowers the cost of data collection and therefore allows to collect more extensive datasets. However, the majority of available computer vision algorithms to study animal behaviour is highly tailored towards a single research objective, limiting possibilities for data reuse. In this perspective, pose-estimation in combination with animal tracking offers opportunities to yield a higher level representation capturing both the spatial and temporal component of animal behaviour. Such a higher level representation allows to answer a wide variety of research questions simultaneously, without the need to develop repeatedly tailored computer vision algorithms. In this paper, we first cope with several weaknesses of current pose-estimation algorithms and thereafter introduce KeySORT (Keypoint Simple and Online Realtime Tracking). KeySORT deploys an adaptive Kalman filter to construct tracklets in a bounding-box free manner, significantly improving the temporal consistency of detected keypoints. In this paper, we focus on pose estimation in cattle, but our methodology can easily be generalised to any other animal species. Our algorithm is able to detect up to 80% of the ground truth keypoints with high accuracy, with only a limited drop in performance when daylight recordings are compared to nightvision recordings. Moreover, by using KeySORT to construct skeletons, the temporal consistency of generated keypoint coordinates was largely improved, offering opportunities with regard to automated behaviour monitoring of animals.

The current paradigm of a business process model is that it is a representation of a sequence of tasks that act upon some data input, to produce an output, aiming the production of a new service or product to be delivered from a producer to a customer. Although this is a valid way of thinking, it neglects to consider in enough detail the influence of some phenomenon on inputs, e.g. human behaviour, communication, social interactions, the organisational culture which can have a significant effect on the output delivered by a business process. As the dynamics of these phenomena are non-linear, they can be interpreted as a complex system. This holistic way of thinking about business processes opens the doors to the possibility of combining different simulation methods to model different aspects that influence a process. A BPMN engine and an agent-based simulation (ABS) engine are chosen to serve the basis of our framework. In its conception, we not only consider the technical aspects of the framework but also delve into exploring its management and organizational dimensions, with the intent of facilitating its adoption in enterprises, as a tool to support decision support systems. We analyse how accurate the simulation results can be when using these two tools as well as what considerations need to be considered within organizations.

Infant Formula Milk (IMF) is the best alternative to human milk and breastfeeding, however selecting the best IMF for infants requires careful consideration primarily because infants are still in the most delicate stage of their life, hence choosing the right IMF for them present a challenge particularly for first time mothers. An online survey was conducted to be able to understand the process of thinking that mothers go through before deciding to buy IMF. This study has identified that compatibility (impact) and practicality (availability and price) are the main factors that most mothers consider when choosing the IMF for their child through Structural Equation modelling (SEM) with formative construct model approach using a component - based / PLS method. The results derived from this study can aid mothers and parents alike decide when choosing the suitable IMF for their child.

The power system loads are often modelled by ag-gregated load models, which describe the voltage characteristics of the bus loads. The bus loads may include distributed generation (DG) units, which affect the apparent load behaviour. In power systems with decreasing amount of dispatchable generation, the voltage characteristics of aggregated loads have raised interest as a source of load flexibility in the context of Conservation Voltage Reduction (CVR). The available CVR potential is often assessed based on the static load models of the bus loads. In this paper, equations for evaluating the impact of DG on the exponential model of an aggregated load are presented. It is also discussed based on numerical examples, how the two calculation methods behave at high penetration level of DG. The results indicate that the methods provide similar results at over 80% penetration level of DG (if the load has resistive characteristic). Above that level the numerical results disembark. In addition, it is shown how the operation point of calculation affects the calculation results of the methods.

We present a mathematical model of a microbial community in the human colon, including transport, exchange and metabolic processes. The colon is represented as a bioreactor with separate lumen and mucus microhabitats. The microbial community in the colon is grouped into four biomass functional groups based on their metabolic activity. While computational models present a challenge in the selection of model parameters, they also provide a more systematic approach to addressing uncertainties when compared to in vivo and in vitro experiments. We conduct an exploratory study on the uncertainty of our input parameters and a simulation study of the perturbation and recovery of gut microbiota from antibiotic exposure. We consider our parameters as random variables drawn from a uniform random distribution to reflect the diversity of gut microbial composition and variability between individuals.
