Consideration of uncertainties in bridge structural engineering is a growing topic because it provides valuable information on the reliability of bridges in time while addressing life-cycle aspects. Utilization of nonlinear finite element method (NLFEM) and Monte Carlo (MC) type simulation is essential for modelling of the concrete bridge random behaviour and its reliability assessments. Generally, a physical problem can be represented by a mathematical model, which depends on input parameters (material characteristics, geometry, etc.). The aim of the stochastic analysis is to propagate uncertainties through a mathematical model to gain statistical information from the output as well as information about the sensitivity of the mathematical model to uncertainties in input variables. However, in bridge engineering, the mathematical model can be quite complex and uncertainty propagation solved by classical MC approach is very difficult to perform as MC type simulation involves large number of numerical evaluations of structural response. Therefore, advanced statistical and reliability techniques, including meta-modelling, have to be applied. The paper describes methodology of such integrated approach for a routine complex assessment utilizing developed software tools and practical application of the approach for selected case studies of concrete bridges from Czech Republic.

Activated carbon adsorption is often used as a primary method in dealing with industrial exhaust containing VOCs. In this work, a mathematical model of an adsorption process was established based on the lumped parameter method, the linear driving force model and adsorption equilibrium dynamics. The mathematical model was numerically solved by using ode15s solver in MATLAB and verified by adsorption experiments. Next, we used the verified model to conduct series of simulations about p-xylene adsorption and desorption onto activated carbon. Simulation results shows that: 1. Double column series adsorption can improve the adsorbent utilization rate and the relative adsorption amount, which increases the desorption rate and the desorption amount. 2. Adopting higher purge gas temperature can increase the desorption rate significantly and reduce the energy requirement for desorbing per kilogram of solvent. 3. The incomplete desorption can greatly reduce the proportion of the inefficient desorption in thermal regeneration steps. Generally, the energy utilization efficiency reaches the maximum when the incomplete desorption ratio is about 60-70%. © 2020 16th conference of the International Society of Indoor Air Quality and Climate: Creative and Smart Solutions for Better Built Environments, Indoor Air 2020. The virtual physiological human gets nerves! How to account for the action of the nervous system in multiphysics simulations of human organs

This article shows how to couple multiphysics and artificial neural networks to design computer models of human organs that autonomously adapt their behaviour to environmental stimuli. The model simulates motility in the intestine and adjusts its contraction patterns to the physical properties of the luminal content. Multiphysics reproduces the solid mechanics of the intestinal membrane and the fluid mechanics of the luminal content;the artificial neural network replicates the activity of the enteric nervous system. Previous studies recommended training the network with reinforcement learning. Here, we show that reinforcement learning alone is not enough;the input-output structure of the network should also mimic the basic circuit of the enteric nervous system. Simulations are validated against in vivo measurements of high-amplitude propagating contractions in the human intestine. When the network has the same input-output structure of the nervous system, the model performs well even when faced with conditions outside its training range. The model is trained to optimize transport, but it also keeps stress in the membrane low, which is exactly what occurs in the real intestine. Moreover, the model responds to atypical variations of its functioning with 'symptoms' that reflect those arising in diseases. If the healthy intestine model is made artificially ill by adding digital inflammation, motility patterns are disrupted in a way consistent with inflammatory pathologies such as inflammatory bowel disease.

Mankind has been witnessing the invasion of pandemic COVID-19 since December 2019. This is not the first time that the world population is suffering from such a deadly infectious disease. In earlier times also the well-being of human beings was disturbed by the diseases like AIDS, SARS, MARS, Polio Plague, Bubonic Plague. During the outbreak of COVID-19, almost all the major sectors-Schools, colleges, railways, air traffic, road traffic, and industrial units remains closed for a long time. It is well known that modelling in mathematical sciences has also played its role in combating and reducing the impacts of infectious diseases. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is made to analyse and explain the dynamical behaviour of pandemics through mathematical modelling. The models like SIR, SEIR, SEIRD, SEAIHCRD, SAUQAR may be seen in the epidemiological literature. The present study has analysed the COVID like pandemic with the help of the Lyapunov Method and Routh Hurwitz stability criteria along with the Jacobian method. mathematical software MATLAB has been used to check the stability/instability of the growth of the pandemic. The mathematical Model SVIER in the present study takes the parametric value from natural birth rate, rate of vaccination for susceptible population, the rate at which vaccinated population again enters into the susceptible population, the natural death rate, rate of vaccination, rate of infection to infected class, the rate of recovery and the rate at which vaccinated class is directly recovered without getting infected and determines the stability of growth of pandemic. In this study, attempt has been made to destabilize the growth of pandemics and formulate a tool to control, contain and eradicate the long-term effects of pandemics. In our findings, it has been observed that Pandemic growth can be controlled through containment of parameters like vaccination, quarantine or hospitalization.

On some new results on mathematical modelling of the human body: A short review

mathematical modelling is one of the methods for determination of the mass-inertial parameters of different segments of the body, as well as of the whole body. The current article presents a review of some new results obtained via recently suggested 20-segmental 3D mathematical model of the human body. In order to automatize the calculation of the mass inertial parameters of the body in any of its usual positions, and not only for separate segments – which can be analytically performed --- the model has been also generated in a proper computer environment. We report some new data obtained via utilization of the model pertinent to the segments of the body. In addition, we also present a short review of our recent results related to i) a new type of mathematical modelling of the thigh of the human body; ii) investigation of the mass – inertial characteristics in basic body position as selected by NASA; iii) study of mass-inertial parameters during the eight phases of the human gait cycle; iv) a new approach for generation of the upper limb of the human body. The proposed model shall be helpful in engineering, when designing devices aimed to help disabled people. Finally, we outline some additional improvements and future developments of the model. Let us note that the proposed model and its considered modifications are oriented towards applications in medicine (orthopedics and traumatology), rehabilitation robotics, computer simulations, sports, as well as in areas such as ergonomics, simulation of human behaviour in space, forensics (body fall, body impact) and more.

Discrete element method (DEM) has proved to be an excellent tool for modelling bulk materials. Contrarily to the early stages of these simulations when mainly circular and spherical elements were used, extensive research is going on regarding the application of complex element shapes, e.g. polyhedra. Robust and objective geometry characterisation methods are needed to quantify the shape of virtual and real particles in order to assess the effect of particle shape on the global mechanical behaviour. This paper proposes a weighted fabric tensor that is able to characterise the shape of individual particles in such a way that the preferred potential load-bearing direction(s) are pointed out. The three eigenvalues of this tensor express whether the stone block or grain is compact, flaky, rod-like, or is an intermediate shape in between the three basic shapes. The proposed approach has computational advantages in quantifying the results of imaging processes of stones and grains deterministically without any subjectivity. It has the advance over the traditional bounding box approaches that it is directly based on the orientations of the surface normal vectors, i.e. those directions along which an assembly of stones or grains can best transmit the internal forces. © ECMS Mike Steglich, Christian Mueller, Gaby Neumann, Mathias Walther.

It is an on-going process for the nuclear industry to implement newer safety measures based on lessons learnt from operating experience in both engineering and operation (such as establishing new regulations and providing additional measures for backup safety actions during external hazards). Even minor safety incidents in NPP are viewed critically and appropriate safety measures are undertaken to prevent such occurrences. Nevertheless, human errors are found to be one of the key contributors to accidents in NPPs. This is due to various reasons such as complex interfaces, workloads, and dynamic situations. Moreover, human error data is hard to be collected and classified;the factors which influence human behaviour are difficult to be identified. When attempting to reduce human error in such complex systems, cognitive dimensions (attention, memory, etc.), behavioural variables, environmental factors, organizational and technical factors associated with incidents/accidents must be clearly addressed. Though a number of methods are available to analyse and investigate the causes of human error, it seems that most of the existing methods are insufficient for comprehensive analysis of human activity-related contextual aspects of accidents. For this reason, the present study proposes a proactive modelling approach that combines fuzzy analytical hierarchy process (FAHP) and Bayesian belief networks (BBNs) with human factors analysis and classification system (HFACS), in order to identify the role of human errors. HFACS is a validated method to classify errors from current investigative records and to document the full range of potential human factor data in complex industries, such as avionics, rail and chemicals. FAHP implementation strengthens the HFACS system by offering an empirical context to ensure the quantitative evaluation of nuclear accidents. The proposed model is comprised of three stages. Planning and predicting the processes of biological tissues heating associated with therapeutic effects involves high-precision mathematical modelling. However, the thermophysical properties of tissues can vary greatly from patient to patient. The paper presents a computational and experimental method for identifying mathematical models of heat transfer, not involving the placement of temperature sensors inside of the studied object. The experimental setup consists of a flat sample of the material, a laser setup, and a thermal imaging camera. The surface thermal response to the pulsed heat flux of the laser is an array of input data for the developed software package. The heat transfer coefficient and heat flux density are determined iteratively by minimizing the residual functional between the calculated and experimental values. The method was tested when determining the characteristics of a specimen of low-pressure polyethylene. The result was obtained in 5 iterations and under the influence of external natural convection, and without taking into account the translucency of the material, a discrepancy of calculated and experimental values of 3.5% was shown. The method can be used to plan the therapeutic process in order to ensure its maximum effectiveness. © 2020 Institute of Physics Publishing. All rights reserved.
