CIBB is a venue that embraces researchers with different backgrounds, ranging from mathematics to computer science, from materials science to medicine, and from engineering to biology, all interested in the investigation and application of computational intelligence methods to open problems in bioinformatics, biostatistics, systems biology, synthetic biology, and medical informatics. The program of this edition was organized with contributions on the main conference scientific area with heterogeneous open problems at the forefront of current research, and in special sessions on specific themes as Computational Methods for Neuroimaging Analysis, Machine Learning in Health Informatics and Biological Systems, Soft Computing Methods for characterizing Diseases from Omics Data, engineering Bio-Interfaces and Rudimentary Cells as a way to Develop Synthetic Biology, modelling and Simulation Methods for System Biology and System Medicine, Fast and Efficient Solutions for Computational Intelligence Methods in Bioinformatics, Systems, and Computational Biology, Networking Biostatistics and Bioinformatics, Machine Explanation—Interpretation of Machine Learning Models for Medicine and Bioinformatics. The organization of this edition of CIBB was supported by the Department of Informatics, Systems and Communication of the University of Milano-Bicocca, Italy, and by the Institute of Biomedical Technologies of the National Research Council, Italy. Besides the papers focused on computational intelligence methods applied to open problems of bioinformatics and biostatistics, the works submitted to CIBB 2019 dealt with algebraic and computational methods to study RNA behaviour, intelligence methods for molecular characterization and dynamics in translational medicine, modeling and simulation methods for computational biology and systems medicine, and machine learning in healthcare informatics and medical biology.

Convective heat transfer in green facade system

Green facades are passive living technologies applied to buildings. They produce many advantages for human wellbeing, building performance, and city environments. Knowledge of the energy behaviour of green facade systems is needed to inform their best design and application, and to define their energy performances. Heat and mass exchanges between the system and the surrounding environment must be determined. In this paper, the schematisation of the green facade system into layers and the energy balance approach are proposed. This study focuses on the analysis of the convective heat transfer occurring between the plant layer and the external air. It is difficult to realistically describe this mechanism and many approaches in the literature were considered. Six different formulae were evaluated. mathematical modelling and empirical data were both used. Once it was discovered that forced convection was the prevailing convective type, selected formulae were applied to the data, which were collected from an experimental green facade at the University of Bari. Based on the energy balance of the plant layer, a comparison between the calculated and measured values was carried out. Qualitative and quantitative statistical methods were used to assess the goodness -of-fit of the considered convective models. These analyses suggest the least and the most suitable approaches for convective heat transfer evaluation. The empirical equation of Morrison and Barfield and an adaptation to green facades of Deardorff model showed the best agreement. The study on the concentration changes of the radioactive substance 18 F-FDOPA in striatum is one of the important technique to diagnose the Parkinson's disease (PD). In research, the compartment model is applied to study the area proportions of 18 F-FDOPA through the brain in the striatum area and consider different concentration levels at a given time t. In particular, we adopt compartmental dynamic model to study the behaviour of 18 F-FDOPA over times after the injection. We also compute the modelling errors and give subsequent discussion about our results.

Reflection is a notion that naturally emerges from philosophy, mathematics, and sciences. In short, reflection is the ability of an entity to alter its own behaviour. This paper suggests that reflection is crucial to the development of complex and trustworthy software systems. We present RL, a reflective computational model that aims to support the development of a large-scale framework for modelling and manipulating structured data. We give the formal semantics for this computational model. We also share preliminary work on a proof-of-concept implementation of RL and discuss future work.

Concept of solar sailing which uses solar energy to propel a spacecraft is becoming popular as a low-cost spacecraft propulsion system. These solar sails require larger area while in operation and are stored in the limited space available in launch vehicles by introducing series of fold-lines. Therefore, precise prediction of deployment behaviour is important in designing tear-free deployment configurations. Physical testing of such applications is difficult due to presence of gravity, air drag and friction which prevent such structures from deploying on Earth. Hence deployment of solar sails has to be tested under vacuum and zero gravity conditions. Virtual simulations are being used to overcome these challenges. This paper attempts to understand deployment behaviour of highly compacted thin membranes and highlight the importance of incorporating fold-line properties in finite element modelling. The effects of membrane thickness and creased geometry for the deployment behaviour and deployment force were also studied through force-displacement relationship of the membrane opening. It is shown that the connection with rotational stiffness gives better idealization for the fold-line in virtual environment. Further it is evident that the deployment force and shape have a significant influence from membrane thickness and fold-line geometry.

This study introduces an efficient method to determine the computation mathematical formula of mutual inductance (M) for a pair of ring coils. A design technique called Box-Behnken that based on the response surface methodology (RSM) was utilised to develop such a formula. The M was developed to be a function for the air-gap (d) between the coupled coils, coils dimensions, and misalignment parameters. Therefore, the introduced new formula is facilitating a ring coil design, and prediction of system behaviour in normal or misalignment conditions. The percentage impact of each parameter on the M was measured. It was found that M is mainly affected by d. Finally, the outcomes due to the new formula are in a line with the results obtained from the finite element modelling (FEM) simulation.

A growing interest is nowadays directed towards the numerical modelling and monitoring of the interlaminar damage evolution of composite laminates, but also to the numerical mathematical models and techniques for simulation of the interface delamination. modelling and investigation of the mechanical behaviour and fracture modes of the multi-layered composites is a complex issue, since other important parameters, such as fibre orientation angles, stacking sequences and configuration of the composite laminates are added to the anisotropic character of the composite materials. Different failure modes may occur on multi-layered composites, while the delamination type fracture may lead to a considerable decrease of the load carrying capacity of the composite structures. Interlaminar stresses, which occur in composite laminates as an effect of the presence of the free edges, have a major influence on the delamination onset and the delamination growth. The paper summarizes the numerical methods and the approaches considered in the simulation of the delamination growth of composite laminates. The obtained results are figured in terms of the opening displacement at the interface crack tip and stress distributions on the plies of the multi-layered composites. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

An IE4 compatible improved designed permanent magnet brushless DC (PMBLDC) motor is presented here for solar powered surface mounted water pumping. With the growing attention on green energy, focus on solar powered irrigation and domestic water pumping are rapidly increasing. High efficiency, compact size and robustness make the PMBLDC motor highly compatible with the solar powered water pumping applications. Focusing this, a detailed design of PMBLDC motor with cost and efficiency optimization, is presented. This work aims a low cost, high efficient commercial development of permanent magnet brushless DC (PMBLDC) motor keeping the irrigation pumping in prime focus. Considering the maximum usage of the renewable energy and to keep the running cost of the water pumping as low as possible, another aim of this work is to make the developed PMBLDC motor solar power compatible. Initially a mathematical approach for different parameter analysis of designed PMBLDC motor is followed by an analysis validation using RMxprt designing tool. Detailed performance analysis and modelling are done using software made by Ansoft Corp. for finite element analysis. Magnetic material and efficiency of the system are optimized using parametric analysis and FEA tool. For analysis and performance validation of developed motor, an industrial product prototype is fabricated and tested at industrial testing facility. © 2020 IEEE.

The airflow in human airways is numerically investigated in a symmetrical three-dimensional airway bifurcation model using Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD). Numerical simulations are carried out for two different geometrical models. Based on Weibel's model of human airways, the first model consists of the trachea (generation 0) and the first daughter generation branches. To develop the second model, the geometry of the first model is extended to the second-generation daughter branches. Simulations were carried out for three different inlet velocities utilizing both the standard k-model and Large Eddy Simulation (LES) model. The aim of the study is to evaluate the use of the LES model and the standard k-model for modelling the airflow in the human airways. The results show that the standard k-model better predict the bronchial flow in comparison to published experimental data. Moreover, Asthma drug delivery is also investigated. Particles of 9 μm diameters, reflecting the size of common asthma-treatment drugs, are induced at an inlet velocity of 3.03 m/s and a mass flow rate of 200 mg/s. © 2019 IEEE.

The 24-hour biological rhythms known as circadian rhythms have been a fast-growing field of research for decades. Recently, the study of circadian rhythms has become important and promising for medical research, especially in the field of cancer treatment. This is due to the fact that perturbations in circadian rhythms have been associated with the progression of cancer and wrongly timed chemotherapy sessions. In addition, the study of the myriad circadian rhythms can be implicated in many areas of research in both biology and medicine. Analysis of circadian rhythms has relied on mathematical methods such as Fourier analysis and Cosinor analysis for the purpose of rhythm detection and parameter estimation. Yet many researchers in biology and medicine are not experts in the implementation and computerization of these mathematical approaches.
