Analysing the behaviour of power system under various conditions of operation is essential in view of its importance. Analysis of HVDC system in particular, considering its increased popularity and complexity, is of importance. Although various software are available for analysing HVDC system, there exists lack of a precise tool for the purpose of real-time analysis. In this paper, full spectrum simulator (FSS) is used for real-time digital simulation of CIGRE HVDC system, after modelling it with mathematical equations. The computer language C is used for coding the system and individual sections of HVDC model are coded separately. Making use of parallel processors, the separate codes are combined to form the complete HVDC system and run on FSS for real-time analysis. The complete program for the model is analysed in off-line simulation and found to be similar to that obtained from FSS for real-time simulation.

Memristor is a type of memory resistor that has analog behaviour. That is, the resistor is programmable between the two modes with the minimum resistance and the maximum resistance, and its values are retained until subsequent voltage implementations. Non-volatility, memory friendliness, analog and high switching performance, minuteness and its capability to integrate with integrated circuits are prominent advantages of this element. In this paper, we perform a physical and behavioural modelling using a structural model designed to evaluate memristor behaviour. Initially, a 4-by-4 cross-over structure is designed. The memory array consists of four vertical nano-wires and four horizontal nano-wires that cross over each other and a memristor is located at the intersection of each nano-wire. In the Memristor structure positive terminal is connected to the vertical nano-wire and its negative terminal to the horizontal nano-wire. The data sequence [1010] in the first column of the array is written in (4, 1), (3, 1), (2, 1), (1,1) cells respectively and then is read from them. Finally, by examining the details of the element behaviour, changing its parameters such as frequency, input voltage and varying Roff and Ron range and employment of a model, designed for simulation, the output results are obtained.

The demand for solar photovoltaic (PV) system is growing rapidly driven by new technology and strong economies of scale. PV systems directly convert solar energy into electricity without release any pollution into the environment and deplete natural resources. PV technology has matured and its reliability keeps improving. However, PV system is more expensive to produce than conventional sources of energy due in part to the cost of manufacturing PV devices and in part to the conversion efficiencies of the equipment. Besides, important attention in designing, developing and installing the PV systems is time-consuming. In this paper, we propose a mathematical model to predict the PV systems behaviour and performance by considering the plausible factors. The factors accept in this model are solar irradiance and manufacturers' information for the type of PV panel. A case study at the eastern part of Peninsular Malaysia was conducted to examine the effect of factors on the performance of PV. Through the comparative analysis, the results have a good agreement. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

Solubility phase diagram which consists of information on solute concentration, metastable and saturation limits against temperature, provides helpful insights in designing crystallization process to achieve desired crystal size distribution (CSD). Usually, the design of cooling crystallization process involves high supersaturation level at the beginning of the process in the metastable zone that is bounded by metastable and saturation limits. However, this high level of supersaturation causes an increment in both nucleation and crystal growth rates which induce the growth of the seed crystals as well as unwanted secondary nucleation that produce excessive fine crystals. Mitigation by employing proper temperature trajectory or policy along metastable zone to avoid unnecessary long operational time and fine crystals is needed. Thus, the purpose of this paper is to develop and simulate mathematical model of seeded batch crystallization process for the case of potash alum which is mainly used for purification in water treatment. Dynamic response of such process under open-loop operation for three cooling policies which are natural, linear and cubic is performed for evaluating the effect of different cooling policies on CSD. Simulation results based on the dynamic behaviour for all three cooling policies show cubic cooling policy obtained the best performance by achieving mean crystal size of 420 µm from the targeted CSD at 430 µm, and the mean crystal size for fine crystals is the lowest which is 35 µm compared to linear and natural cooling policies, at 40 µm and 55 µm, respectively. This information is prominent in deciding proper temperature trajectory of optimal cooling policy for potash alum crystallization process.

One of the current main challenges in Geotechnical and Structural engineering is the analysis of the vertical component of site ground motion. In engineering practice, a simplified formulation of the Biot‘s equations is usually employed to model the coupled hydro-mechanical behaviour of saturated soils, namely the u–u formulation that neglects some terms of fluid inertial forces. This is in contrast with more refined formulations such as the u– u formulations that takes all inertial terms into account. The aim of this work is the validation of the u–u formulation as compared with the u–u formulation by means of numerical simulations, which are performed for different levels of permeability and different dynamic motions. The results are analysed in terms of frequency content and amplification rate, discussing the limits of applicability of the u–u formulation with respect to the u–u formulation. © 2019 Associazione Geotecnica Italiana, Rome, Italy.

Geometric modelling is one of the methods for determination of the mass-inertial parameters of the different segments of the body, as well as of the body as a whole. It can be in addition used for determination of the body mass-inertial positions in different positions specific when a person performs a given activity including those in everyday life like walking, driving a car, relaxing at home in a convenient chair, but also in sports, in entertainment, etc., including even position of interest for NASA for planning the space activities of astronauts. The current article presents data on the geometric and mass-inertial characteristics of the human body based on a 16-segmental 3D model for some of the above-mentioned problems. We present both a brief review of some of our results, report some additional measurements needed for improving the geometrical modelling and outline some suggestions for the improvement and future development of the model. The so developed model is oriented towards application in medicine (orthopaedics and traumatology), rehabilitation robotics, computer simulations, sports and fields such as simulation of human behaviour in space, ergonomics, criminology, and other areas. © 2019 Newswood Limited. Lignocellulosic biomass could be pyrolytically converted into value-added products and one of the steps during the pyrolysis is thermal decomposition which involves multiple reactions. Therefore, mathematical modelling of thermal decomposition could provide molecular insight into thermal degradation reactions by providing accurate prediction of the phases of the multi-component reactions in particular nucleation, growth and boundary-phase reactions occurring under different working conditions. In this study, thermal decomposition behaviour of Corn Stover was explored using thermogravimetry technique (TGA-DTG) at heating rates of 20, 30, 40 and 50 °C/min under nitrogen gas flow (55 mL/min) and oxygen gas flow at 15 mL/min. The Flynn-Wall Ozawa (FWO) and Kissinger Akahira Sunose (KAS) models were used to estimate the kinetic parameters such as apparent activation energy, pre-exponential factor and order of reaction so as to be able to design the pyrolytic reactor that could be used for the biomass conversion. The hemicellulose maximum mass loss rate was at 300 °C, cellulose at 410 °C and lignin decomposition from 190 °C to 620 °C. The apparent activation energies calculated ranged from 44.39 -134.81 kJ/mol using the FWO method while the KAS method gave 87.83 - 282.41 kJ/mol. The variation of the apparent activation energy represents the four different stages occurring during the thermal decomposition process for the corn stover. The Friedman's model was used with reaction- order model to estimate the order of reaction. The predicted model fitted well with the experimental data showing that the complex degradation process followed a first-order reaction.

The proposed article is based on mathematical models of study and development setting up computational experiments of a person using an exoskeleton walking with a load process. The development and study of anthropomorphic robots' dynamics involves the systematic approach and use of mathematical modelling methods, the automatic control theory apparatus, which makes it possible to study a complex object as a whole and also consideration of the totality of human-machine system elements, united by diverse and multi-level types of connections, as an integral object. The research objectives are the development of mathematical models describing the process of operator-exoskeleton interaction, as well as the development of a three-link mathematical model of the exoskeleton - operator system. The development of a motion control strategy when walking allows obtaining time dependences of state vector parameters changes. mathematical models describing the process of operator and the exoskeleton interaction are being developed. The research is based on the original three-link mathematical model of the exoskeleton-operator system proposed in the paper. The original method based on interpolation, experimentally obtained data and dynamic analysis of the operator-exoskeleton system behaviour is applied. In the course of numerical modelling, time diagrams of the hinge-mechanical system torques in the process of lifting loads were obtained. Basing on the results of mathematical modelling of an operator's walking with a load in an industrial exoskeleton, the conclusions about the possibilities of an active gravitational compensator in the hip joint are obtained.

modelling of the gluco-regulatory system in response to an oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) has been the subject of research for decades. This paper presents an adaptation to the well-established oral minimal model that is identifiable from glucose data only and is able to capture the dynamics of glucose following both OGTT and mixed meal consumption. The model is in the form of low-dimensional differential equations with a recently introduced input function consisting of Gaussian shaped components. It was identified from glucose data recorded from six subjects without diabetes, prediabetes and type 2 diabetes under controlled conditions. The inferred parameters of the model are shown to have physiological meaning and produce realistic steady state behavior. This model may be useful in the development of clinical advisory tools for the treatment and prevention of non-insulin dependent type 2 diabetes mellitus.

Acoustic behaviour of the human maxillary sinus: The importance of the middle meatus and the ostium on resonance frequency behaviour

This study aims to investigate the resonance frequency of the human maxillary sinus for the application of acoustically-driven drug delivery. An improved model of the classic Helmholtz resonator formula has been developed to predict the resonance frequency of a nasal cavity and maxillary sinus combination, using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). To be more specific, a 3-D CFD model of the left side of a healthy human nose, composed of a nasal cavity connected to the maxillary sinus through an ostium, has been developed to undertake direct computational acoustics for predicting the resonance frequency. The simulations of the acoustic airflow in the nasal cavity, ostium, and maxillary sinus were carried out by solving the continuity and Navier-Stokes equations. A series of experiments were conducted for validation of CFD modelling using the resonance frequency of the nasal cavity and maxillary sinus combination as a criterion. The results showed that the classic Helmholtz resonator formula overpredicted the resonance frequency of the realistic nasal cavity and maxillary combination by 50% compared to measured experimental data. However, the results of the CFD simulation demonstrated a good agreement with the experimental data, showing a difference of 10%. Further, it is shown that by accounting for the fluid mass within both the maxillary sinus and the middle meatus the resonance frequency of the nasal cavity and maxillary sinus combination can be accurately predicted.
