This paper focuses on a simulation platform to model and simulate the energy consumption of a building with multiple zones under the influence of daily and seasonal environmental factors, as well as the impact of the HVAC system and human activities. By using model-based requirements engineering (MBRE), the requirements of the simulation platform are hierarchically derived and specified. On this basis, the simulation platform is designed and developed. With the help of the simulation platform, it is possible to obtain a mathematical model for a realistic description of the thermodynamics and energy consumption of the individual zones of a building, which can be used as a basis for the model-based development of the energy management system, e.g. intelligent energy dispatch strategy. In the following, the concept of the simulation platform and the process will be demonstrated and validated with an application example of the research building Open Mobility Lab (OML).

This paper introduces a comprehensive design process of coupled composite layups. Optimizing the layup for a morphing race car diffusor is the example case study. Analytical optimization is followed by numerical simulations and validation by physical testing. As a first step, the analytical optimization tool (written in MATLAB) finds the optimal layup for the desired coupled mechanical behaviour (e.g. twisting in response to bending moment) by calculating and comparing the magnitude of the coupling terms of each layup permutation based on the classical laminate theory (CLT). The realistic boundary conditions and loads are simulated numerically with the use of finite element modelling. The autoclave-prepreg manufactured specimens are then tested physically on universal test machines to validate modelling results. The optimized coupling behaviour was found to be significant enough to promise notable aerodynamic advantage over the traditional diffusor. The optimization process proved to be useful. It is possible to use this process to optimize the layup for a wide variety of different components with coupling behaviour. Furthermore, this paper presents possible solutions to mitigate thermally induced warping of coupled composites with non-symmetric layups. Laminating on tools with excessive curvatures to counterweigh thermal warpage during manufacturing, or designing composites with hybrid layups in terms of the ply materials are proposed. © 2019 International Committee on Composite Materials. An important number of major utilities infrastructure projects are adopted worldwide as a consequence of human migration, pollution, geo-political alliances which force the governments around the world to massively invest in new transport and distribution networks serving for water, electricity, gas and oil supply. Installing pipelines in energy utility corridors containing high-voltage AC transmission lines subjects the pipelines to induced AC voltages, which is a real and serious problem requiring increased attention. Through proper modelling techniques, the induced currents and voltages in the underground/aboveground metallic pipelines can be accurately computed. In the following paper two different modelling concepts, based on circuit theory and electromagnetic theory approach are developed and discussed. A common right-of-way corridor between an overhead transmission line and a metallic pipeline is considered during the proposed assessment methodology. In order to evaluate how different variations of the model affects the magnitude of the induced quantities in the metallic pipeline a parametric analysis is employed. Based on the computed results, several dependencies between the power line current loads along with the considered length of parallel routing and the induced voltage are highlighted.

This paper presents the implementation of a mobile robot in 3D environment. A non-holonomic mobile robot (TurtleBot Burger 3) is designed to navigate following different trajectories by controlling its motors, and it is expected to be useful to test autonomous navigation algorithm. The study of a non-holonomic mobile robot is so difficult due to the complexity of its mathematical description. Therefore, this paper introduces a simulator based on the geometrical structure of the robot. After that, a 3D mobile robot is built and simulated in Matlab-Simscape environment. Different schemes of tracking trajectories have been introduced in this work to study the behaviour of the mobile robot. The purpose of this 3D environment is to create a hostile environment with random obstacles and it optimize the path tracking of the robot. The proposed simulation modelling is valuable to give a clear understanding of complex systems and it will help to have a correct digital representation of the robot. © 2019 IEEE.

A mathematical model for the virtual simulator of the power unit electrical part

The mathematical model is developed for a virtual training system (simulator) of the power unit electrical part operators of a thermal (nuclear) power plant. The model is used to simulating the main operating conditions of the power unit electrical part: generator idling, generator synchronization with the power system, excitation shifting from the main unit to the backup one and vice versa, switching in the power unit auxiliary system, and others. Furthermore, it has been implemented modelling some probable emergency conditions within a power plant: incomplete phase switching, damage to standard power unit equipment, synchronous oscillations, asynchronous mode, etc. The model of the power unit electrical part consists of two interacting software units: models of power equipment (turbine, generator with excitation systems, auxiliary system) and models of its control systems, automation, relay protection and signalling. The models are represented by the corresponding algebraic-differential equations that provide real-time mapping power unit processes at the operator's request. The developed model uses optimal solving algebraic-differential equations to ensure the virtual process behaviour in real-time. In particular, the implicit Euler method is used to solve differential equations, which is stable when simulating processes in significant disturbances, such as accidental disconnection of the unit from the power system, tripping and energizing loads, generator excitation loss, etc.

Analytical modelling and experimental measurements are both useful techniques for evaluating the performance of networks. Models provide insight while measurement provides realism. mathematical analysis can provide valuable insights for the management and configuration of a network in order to optimise network performance. Queueing analysis has been used extensively to study the performance of telecommunications and computer networks. However, software-defined networking (SDN) has introduced greater variability within the network environment. For software defined networks, it is unknown how well the existing queueing models represent the performance of a real SDN network. This leads to uncertainty between what can be predicted and the actual behaviour of a software defined network. This work investigates the accuracy of software defined network queueing models. This is done through comparing the performance results of analytical models to experimental performance results. The outcome of this is a better understanding of how reliable the existing queueing models are for analysing SDN performance and areas where the queueing models can be improved. © 2019 IEEE.

The purpose of the article is to develop the required and sufficient conditions under which numerical methods can be used for engineering calculations and for scientific research of hydrodynamic processes in solving practical problems related to predicting the spread of pollutants in water bodies and streams. The conducted studies consisted in comparing the results of laboratory experiments and mathematical modelling, in particular the distribution of heat in a stream with different temperature in water layers was studied. To check the adequacy of the proposed numerical models, calculations were performed and comparisons were made with the results of experimental data. The obtained results allowed to determine the boundaries of the qualitative difference in the flow behaviour for different numbers of Froude and Reynolds. The accuracy of the method was also studied. A number of additional requirements for numerical models were proposed in addition to approcsimation and stability, such as requirements of conservativeness (divergence), existence of trivial solutions on grids, possibility to calculate highly unsteady, quasi-stable, pulsating and stationary flows, requirement of invariance of linearized equations, as well as the requirement of a one-dimensional scheme to be a consequence of a two-dimensional scheme. Distribution of velocities of wind currents using a three-dimensional and two-dimensional model was studied for a real object. A shallow-water bay of the Aral Sea was chosen as the object for the research. Comparison of the calculation results for both models showed that the flow velocity fields, as well as the distribution of pollutants in shallow waters, can be performed using a two-dimensional model.

Computer Aided Design (CAD) packages are widely used to create mathematical modelling of product’s geometry at the time of design and development phase. This CAD model involves very complicated definition of geometrical entities and interpretation of the same for assembly planning is an open research area. Most of the currently used assembly planning approaches hugely depends on human expert’s intervention. Current practices mostly use, only component name definition out of CAD data to identify component type which is likely to fail if the industry is using different language or number system to define component names. This paper presents a novel CAD data computation system for component type realization and assembly sequence generation. The developed system works automatically and independent of component names so that manual errors can be avoided. Assembly sequence generation helps in reducing complexity to be analyzed by human expert. © Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd 2019.

In recent years multidisc wet friction clutches are of great importance to manufacturers of automatic transmissions (ATs) for the automotive industry, particularly since the introduction of double-clutched ATs. Their main advantage compared to their dry-friction counterparts is that they ensure smooth engagement, high reliability and long service life. Their progressive engagement due to the developed Couette flow between the discs enables them to be used both as clutches and as brakes in order to control power flow in simultaneously engaged geared shafts in the AT. Due to the coupled nature between the mechanical and the fluid dynamics regimes governing their operation, these systems are highly complex to be treated analytically and instead numerical approaches have proven to provide better results. However, the numerical treatment of such problems provides only case-specific results, which cannot be generalised and are not able to provide a general insight in the complex dynamics of the device. Furthermore the computational cost and the associated modelling and simulation effort during the design phase is high, making the incorporation of such methods in iterative design processes and algorithms counterproductive. In this paper the modelling of the dynamic behaviour of a wet multidisc clutch during the engagement phase is performed, via the combination of analytical and numerical methods and conclusions are drawn about the effect of the main geometric, kinematic and dynamic design parameters on the clutch's response. The dynamic modelling is performed by applying the principle of linear and angular momentum on each disc. The effect of the fluid film is taken into account through the solution of the governing Navier-Stokes equations via CFD analysis or by the use of semi-analytical solutions with high accuracy, where applicable. The drug release system is a process in which a bioactive substance discharged from a drug product and enters the process of absorption, distribution and metabolism to deliver its pharmacological action. The drug release is maintained at a specific rate to maximize the benefits as well as to suppress the side impacts. The release rate behaviour is affected by physiological conditions such as ion charge, pH level and enzymatic environment. Since the intestinal tract itself varies broadly in a pH environment, hence it is important to study the profile of drug release in different pH conditions. mathematical model turns out very useful in predicting the drug release as well as reducing experimental works. The objective of this work was to study the mathematical model in describing the drug release profile in gastrointestinal tract liquid simulation. The release profiles of furosemide and sodium-iron chlorophyllin encapsulation were studied in the pH ranges 1.3-1.5 and 6.8-7.4 to simulate the different part of gastrointestinal tract acidity. The Korsemeyer-Peppas, Weibull and Gompertz were applied in describing the profile. Korsmeyer-Peppas model shows more superior (R2>0.912) than Weibull and Gompertz in describing the release kinetic of furosemide and sodium-iron chlorophyllin encapsulations in both pHs of GTS. The n values of Korsmeyer-Peppas are mostly less than 0.5 suggesting the release mechanism was governed by diffusion. © 2019 Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.
