In this paper we compared different types of interfacial engineering methods to achieve pseudo-ductile behavior in carbon fiber reinforced polymer composites. We achieved this behavior with the help of fused deposition modelling (FDM) using poly(Ε-caprolactone) (PCL) whereas we printed this material onto the surface of the carbon fiber (CF) weave as the interface engineering material to induce the pseudo-ductile behavior. Furthermore, we investigated the effect of surface filling (SF) as well. In the other hand we investigated the feasibility of a new method whereas we used CO2 laser to burn of the sizing from the CF surface. Both methods aim to achieve the pseudo-ductile behavior with interfacial engineering where tailored weaker zones between the matrix and the fiber reinforcement could be created. The task for these zones is to slow down the crack propagation during the damage process. In all occasions the different amount of PCL as an interfacial engineering material had effects on the pseudo-ductile behavior and with scanning electron microscopy (SEM) we also showed the feasibility of the CO2 laser for surface treatment as well. © 2019 International Committee on Composite Materials. In the past, various traditional methods used experiments and statistical data to examine and solve the occurred problem and social-environmental issue. However, the traditional method is not suitable for expressing or solving the complex dynamics of human environmental crisis (such as the spread of diseases, natural disaster management, social problems, etc.). Therefore, the implementation of computational modelling methods such as Agent-Based Models (ABM) has become an effective technology for solving complex problems arising from the interpretation of human behaviour such as human society, environment, and biological systems. Overall, this article will outline the ABM model properties and its applications in the criminology, flood management, and the COVID-19 pandemic fields. In addition, this article will review the limitations that occurred to be overcome in the further development of the ABM model.

The noise behaviour of gearboxes is influenced substantially by gear mesh excitation. Therefore, low level of mesh excitation is one of major design goals being considered as soon as possible in the design stage. There are many approaches are available for the evaluation of gear noise behavior in the literature. These can be categorized into quasistatic and dynamic approaches. Despite comprehensive results, the dynamic simulation is quite time-consuming and needs extensive effort on modelling. Therefore, this approach is not suitable for the gear design stage. When the calculation time is critical, the quasistatic approaches are advantageous thanks to the simplification of mathematical terms in the calculation. Therefore, they are preferred in the design and optimatization stage. However, quasistatic approaches are focused mainly on evaluation of noise behaviour of single-stage gearboxes so far. In order to enable the evaluation for multistage gearboxes, the tooth excitations of each gear mesh can be extended into the bearing force. Furthermore, the bearing force level can be derived from this measurement and used as vibration indicator. In this paper, validation of the bearing force and bearing force level is investigated by means of vibration measurements on a multistage gearbox. The correlation of the numerical bearing force and measured structure borne noise is investigated. Additionally, the geometrical position of the result excitation due to engagement angles varies in time for multistage gearboxes. The spectral analysis of the total excitation is performed by means of its orthogonal components.

modelling and optimization have long been established as a means of achieving efficiency in energy systems also in sustaining the environment. In Nigeria, where environmental pollution have become a challenge, the problem of pollution and safety has become a global concern whereby sustainable power generation systems with zero greenhouse emission will serve as a better way of sustaining the environment. Simulation been a basic similitude tool to real life engineering design enable the engineers to understand the interactive flow process within an operating systems, postulating operation results, designing process systems or optimizing the operating system with optimum accuracy. This tool enables an engineer to establish the geometrical parameters for the actual design of the system. Cyclones, which are widely used as air pollution abatement equipment, are used in processing industries for removal of particulate matter (PM). A 1D2D centrifugal fan power driven cyclone is attached to a batch-type fixed-bed downdraft gasifier was modelled and simulated to determine the behaviour of the gasification products and the optimal efficiency of the cyclone. Applying mathematical modeling and CFD tools to understand the effect of the gas stream on the cyclone performance and a new optimized cyclone geometrical ratios based on the mathematical model was attained. Establishing the cyclone modelling was done by applying the heat content simulation tool (MATLAB-Software package) and using the response surface methodology (RSM) approach. The geometrical parameters in cyclone separators significantly affected the flow field and performance parameters. Analysis of the experimental design informed the researcher on the relationship between the effects of inlet dimensions and the vortex finder diameter on the performance of the cyclone. mathematical control models are widely used in tuning manual control systems and understanding human performance. The most common model, the crossover model, is severely limited, however, in describing realistic human control behaviour in relevant control tasks as it is only valid for tracking with a compensatory display. This paper first discusses the state-of-the-art in modelling human control in tracking with pursuit displays. It is shown that, although both tasks seem very similar, the separate presentation of target and system output signals allows operators to adopt a huge variety in control strategies, which makes the development of a universal model for pursuit control a challenge. Two recent models are then described which can act as precursors to such a universal model. Third, system identification choices and issues are discussed for pursuit tracking tasks. Finally, it is argued that it is inevitable that time-varying rather than time-invariant methods are needed to properly describe human behaviour in the pursuit tracking task, as skilled operators will learn to characterize the probabilistic nature of the task, which cannot be captured in a single, linear, time-invariant model.

This paper explores the application of real-time spatial information from urban transport systems to understand the outbreak, severity and spread of seasonal and pandemic influenza outbreaks from a spatiotemporal perspective. We believe that combining travel data with epidemiological data is the first step to develop a tool to predict future epidemics and better understand the effects that these outbreaks have on societal functions over time. Real-time data-streams provide a powerful, yet underutilised tool when it comes to monitoring and detecting changes to the daily behaviour of inhabitants. Historical datasets from public transport and road traffic serves as an initial indication of whether changes in daily transport patterns corresponds to seasonal influenza data. It is expected that changes in daily transportation habits corresponds to swings in daily and weekly influenza activity and that these differences can be measured through geostatistical analysis. Conceptually one could be able to monitor changes in human behaviour and activity in nearly true time by using indicators derived from outside the clinical health services. This type of more up-to-date and geographically precise information could contribute to earlier detection of influenza outbreaks and serve as background for implementing tailor-made emergency response measures over the course of the outbreaks. © 2019, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

In the STAMP model, based on control theory, the control relationships between various system elements enforced by the closed Control Loops (CLs) are logical and functional. A literature survey emphasized the fact that for the moment STAMP and its main tools STPA and CAST are not associated with any numerical tools. The main rationale of our work is to understand whether STAMP matches to be a quantitative model. Furthermore, in a case that we find that numerical tools can be used in STAMP, we intend to bridge the gap between the logical-functional approach in STAMP and any of the suitable quantitative approaches applied in engineering Control Theory (ECT). As a first step, a literature comparison was performed between the basic control parameters existing explicitly at the moment in the STAMP model, and those well known in the literature of ECT. The results reveal that there are many similar terms, especially related to conceptual and general definitions. However, we have observed that there are also basic quantitative parameters from ECT which are not yet referred to in STAMP as quantitative safety evaluation parameters. Another main finding is an inherent difference in various ECT related parameters and the CLs at the various hierarchical levels. ECT was originally developed to deal with physical systems. Thus, any machine related internal control loops within the lower-physical level of a Sociotechnical System (STS) can be directly addressed with quantitative methods from ECT. However, most of the human-machine interactions in the lower levels and the human and societal controls in the higher levels are at the moment not suitable for those methods. We assume these ECT parameters may have an important role in designing and examining systems safety and hence we suggest, should be integrated into STAMP model, in purpose to be able to enhance systems safety. © The Authors, published by EDP Sciences, 2019.

The airflow in human airways is numerically investigated in a symmetrical three-dimensional airway bifurcation model using Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD). Numerical simulations are carried out for two different geometrical models. Based on Weibel's model of human airways, the first model consists of the trachea (generation 0) and the first daughter generation branches. To develop the second model, the geometry of the first model is extended to the second-generation daughter branches. Simulations were carried out for three different inlet velocities utilizing both the standard k-ε-model and Large Eddy Simulation (LES) model. The aim of the study is to evaluate the use of the LES model and the standard k-ε-model for modelling the airflow in the human airways. The results show that the standard k-ε-model better predict the bronchial flow in comparison to published experimental data. Moreover, Asthma drug delivery is also investigated. Particles of 9 μm diameters, reflecting the size of common asthma-treatment drugs, are induced at an inlet velocity of 3.03 m/s and a mass flow rate of 200 mg/s.

In this paper, we outline the implementation of Hibler’s visco-plastic (VP) sea ice model into OpenFOAM, an open-source finite-volume modelling toolkit. Hibler’s visco-plastic model is arguably the most widely used description of sea ice rheology, and finds application in most global climate models. The VP model has been shown to accurately capture the bulk behaviour of sea ice at large length scales. Under convergent conditions, the VP model allows the sea ice to deform plastically, while for small strains, near drift like conditions can be captured. Unfortunately however, due to the potential for large viscosities, the VP model tends to become numerically unstable. The general consensus in literature is that an implicit solution scheme is required, which tend to become expensive when used in global climate models. Suggestions to improve the convergence behaviour include techniques such as successive over-relaxation or via the addition of an elastic term, known as the elastic-visco-plastic (EVP) method. In this paper, we aim introduce the concept of dynamic relaxation, which in addition to matrix conditioning, can be used to both stabilise and accelerate the iterative convergence behaviour. The paper discusses the application of the methods of hybrid intelligent multi-agent systems of heterogeneous thinking to solve the problem of planning the restoration of the regional distribution grid after large-scale accidents. In case of large-scale shutdowns in the distribution grid, the problem of optimizing the material resources (stocks, stuff, equipment, human resources) of the energy supplying organization arises to minimize the consequences of the outages. It is characterized by the decision-making time shortage, heterogeneity of continuously incoming information, distribution of the subject and control object, partial observability of the latter, as well as its dynamic nature, which determines the interdependence of the performed actions and the complexity of erroneous solutions correction. Abstract-mathematical models are limited and irrelevant to such problems, and time limits do not allow for a comprehensive collective discussion of the problem by experts. In this regard, the development of intelligent information systems that integrate the knowledge of experts of various specialties, the coordination of many optimality criteria and restrictions in the context of dynamic directly unobservable environments and the lack of time for decision-making, is proposed in this paper.
