modelling and simulation is an alternative way of testing the dynamic behaviour of a real system – in some situation, testing the real system are expensive, time consuming, not comfortable, and dangerous. mathematical model describing the dynamic behaviour of a system can be represented by using white, black, or grey box model. This study focuses on developing a simplified Auto Regressive Moving Average (ARMA) model (a type of linear black model) to represent the dynamic thermal behaviour of iHouse – simplification is done based on the theoretical knowledge of the building. The performance of the simplified ARMA model developed in this study is compared with the performance of the models developed in previous studies, which are: (1) House Thermal Simulator;(2) and ARMA model. Result shows that the simplified ARMA model developed in this study consists of simpler set of mathematical equations, but can still simulate the dynamic thermal behaviour of iHouse with the accuracy that is almost on par with the models developed in previous studies. © Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2017.

Handling the increasing complexity of modern products like mechatronic systems requires knowledge from different disciplines. Engineers are called to collaborate across companies and disciplines in order to acquire the knowledge needed. However, collaborative design is an established way of product development in practice, there is an increasing need to describe and understand the challenges between processes, methods, and tools as well as the persons involved. We propose an overall framework containing an explanation model and a concept to support the application of methods and communication. The explanation model comprises three views namely process, personal, and technical-methodical view to describe the elements within collaborative design in detail and give insights for the interrelations between the views. The purpose of the model is to analyze collaborations to plan and implement new methods and tools as well as changes in corresponding processes. Based on a detailed description of the single views and prior research on interrelations between personal, process and technical-methodical view, an overall framework and a detailing explanation model are introduced.

Dietary habits are one of the main causes of fatal diseases such as cardiovascular disorder, cancer and diabetes. This paper aims to illustrate a proportional relationship between diet and behaviour of the immune system which responds when a human body is being attacked by pathogens. However, if a person's diet is well balanced their immune system will improve and vice versa. Nonlinear ordinary differential equations are formulated to describe the behaviour of the immune system and its response when a human body gets infected by a pathogen. This model considers two populations: normal cells and immune cells. In addition, the model has been monitoring the behaviour of the immune system for thirty days using Mathematica 10.0 software. The results prove that well balanced and regular diet can boost the immune system and improve its response to protect a human body from diseases. In conclusion, a balanced diet plays a huge role in reducing the percentage of lethal diseases.

Robot Swarms (RS) is an approach that leads to the combined functioning of multiple robot systems to achieve a desired collective behaviour. Robot Swarms possess multiple benefits e.g. RS employment in calamity salvage missions: Swarms of robots of various sizes could be sent to the spots where salvage specialists can't reach securely to detect the presence of life. Swarms can be utilized as a part of military to frame a self-governing armed force. Apart from a large number of advantages, the biggest challenge for RS is its non-predictable behaviour. Architectures and protocols for working of swarms of robots have already been designed and implemented, but to improve the non-predictability of swarms either experiments with robots are to be carried out or computational simulations are performed. However, with these approaches, a deep analysis of all the possible behaviours is very difficult. To improve the non-predictability of RS we used a potent technique, formal verification to confirm that it is bug free. Researchers have realized that computer simulations alone are not capable of evaluating a system or protocol against all possible scenarios. This has encouraged us to employ model checker tools like UPAAL to evaluate Path Planning Algorithms and Alive human Navigation through RS in disastrous situation. After verification of probabilistic behaviour of swarms, finally, we can safely claim that the collective working of a robot swarm will be free of any undesirable behaviour.

Excessive vibration problems related to building floors concerning the human comfort have been reported by several researchers in the past two decades. The reason for those vibrations is mainly related with the current trend for the design of slender and flexible structural systems, with the inherent low damping. Consequently, such floors are prone to resonant motion which may reach high vibration levels once their natural frequencies lie in the same range of the human induced forces. In this sense, the human activities, such as walking, jumping or bouncing have been described in some design guides by pure forces acting on the structure. This assumption has conducted to a more or less conservative structural design depending on the chosen loading model function. Recent studies have demonstrated that the use of biodynamics models in order to represent the human behaviour may lead to a more realistic, reasonable and economical design, as they take into account the human body dynamic properties. This paper aims at evaluating the body dynamic parameters by means of a force plate and an accelerometer mounted on the human body when a rhythmic activity (jumping) is developed. This way, experimental tests are carried out both on a rigid surface and on a vibrating floor so that the mass, spring and damping of the identified human biodynamic model can be obtained through an optimisation method. The demand for solar photovoltaic (PV) system is growing rapidly driven by new technology and strong economies of scale. PV systems directly convert solar energy into electricity without release any pollution into the environment and deplete natural resources. PV technology has matured and its reliability keeps improving. However, PV system is more expensive to produce than conventional sources of energy due in part to the cost of manufacturing PV devices and in part to the conversion efficiencies of the equipment. Besides, important attention in designing, developing and installing the PV systems is time-consuming. In this paper, we propose a mathematical model to predict the PV systems behaviour and performance by considering the plausible factors. The factors accept in this model are solar irradiance and manufacturers' information for the type of PV panel. A case study at the eastern part of Peninsular Malaysia was conducted to examine the effect of factors on the performance of PV. Through the comparative analysis, the results have a good agreement.

Studying tumor growth using mathematical models from magnetic resonance (MR) images is an important application that is believed to play a major role in cancer treatment by predicting tumor evolution, quantifying the response to therapy, and treatment planning. Reaction diffusion is the most popular model because of its simplicity and consistency with the biological growth process. However, most of the current growth models focus on presurgical images and likely without treatment. In this paper, we propose a new reaction diffusion model to consider the chemotherapy and radiotherapy effects on the tumor growth modelling for patients with low grade glioma. The proposed model does not consider the tensor information from diffusion tensor imaging. Instead it uses a weighted parameter to promote higher diffusivity in white matter. The radiotherapy and chemotherapy effects are considered as a loss terms in the proposed model. The preliminary results of the proposed model on synthetic and 2 real MR images show that, our model can effectively simulate tumor growth with high accuracies when treatments are administrated to low grade glioma patients.

Recent knowledge collected on drug molecules and their intermolecular interactions can be used to predict the mechanisms underlying the human physiological processes. In this scenario, computer-aided drug design (CADD) is commonly employed to facilitate the progression of potential inhibitor identification. Amongst the various computational approaches, pharmacophore modelling is classified as a decent technique to identify the lead inhibitors or drug molecules that fit chemically different structural classes. Besides, biological networks and designed biochemical mathematical models have been employed to explore the pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics in biological systems. Moreover, molecular dynamics (MD) simulation, a broadly used computational approach based on Newton’s equation of motion for a given system of atoms, delivers the information about protein–ligand interactions. Additionally, synthetic biology approach has been broadly employed as a precise and vigorous technique to accelerate the genome sequence data and reduction in DNA synthesis cost. Synthetic biology has been also reported to investigate the biological circuit and behaviour or the role of human physiological system. Prominently, the competences to design potential drugs are highly dependent on the fundamental understanding of drug molecules and their biochemical interactions. In this context, the gap between number of identified hit molecules and authentic or genuine drug molecules can be bridged by utilizing the recent bioinformatics approaches. © 2018, The Author(s).

Today, most large and complex systems such as aircrafts or power grids integrate physical and human aspects with computing and networking, and therefore constitute socalled socio-cyber-physical systems (SCPS). Their engineering, from prospective and conceptual studies (to determine the scope of the system) through design and construction to operation, maintenance and upgrades, necessitates the cooperation and coordination of many teams representing different disciplines and viewpoints. In addition, such systems are subject to many constraints such as tight budget and schedule;high dependability, safety and security;need to innovate;long lifetime;changing and uncertain environments. This paper presents a modelling and simulation (M&S) based engineering approach that can address the challenges of large and complex SCPS, and more generally, of systems of SCPS (SoS). Contrary to "classical" M&S approaches relying on deterministic behavioural models that can be developed only in the final stages of the design process, the proposed approach relies on constraints models that specify envelopes of required or assumed behaviours, and that can be applied at any phase of the system lifecycle. Also, in order to manage complexity and the variety of viewpoints, the approach supports models composition, whereby models from different teams or at different phases of the process can be aggregated (top-down or bottom-up) and verified for consistency.

Asteroids have been observed both from the ground and through space missions for decades, which accumulated large amount of their observational data. These data are used to estimate the sizes, orbits, and even possible chemical compositions of asteroids. Even though the chemical composition is generally difficult to be accurately determined without a sample return or in-situ observation by a spacecraft, asteroids are classified based on their reflectance spectra, which are compared with those of meteorites, which are known to be mostly originated from asteroids. This scheme works reasonably well for some asteroid types, but others, mostly featureless ones in reflectance spectra, remained controversial due to the fact that the observational data of asteroids and measured data of meteorites are different in terms of the data coverage, precision and resolution. Our aim is to connect asteroids with meteorites based on sparse modelling in order to search for the optimal integration scheme for two different databases without relying on preliminary knowledge. For the above purpose, we develop large databases of asteroids and meteorites for easy application of sparse modelling. Through our analyses including principal component analysis, Bayesian spectral deconvolution and dimensionality reduction, we found that our data-driven approach can extract potential information without using empirical knowledge. Our methods show a new type of data handling scheme for asteroid and meteorite data, potentially having a significant contribution for future missions. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.
