System behaviour usually is modelled with logical operators and triggering conditions on control flows between processes, activities, tasks, or events. This allows branching control flows in order to increase model comprehensibility. In case of Topological Functioning Model (TFM), where system's functionality is represented by causal relations among functional characteristics, combinations of causes as well as triggered effects may be quite complex. Therefore, specification of them must not decrease apprehensibility of the TFM, while keeping its accuracy, compactness and level of abstraction. Additionally, this specification must also be modifiable and transformable. In this paper we discuss and refine a concept of a cause-and-effect relation and a logical relation in the TFM. Then, we analyze specification means used in BPMN, UML Activity Diagrams, EPCs, flowcharts, Petri Nets and Decision Models and assess which of them are more appropriate for using or integrating with the TFM. The more suitable means will increase the accuracy of specification of logical relations and system behaviour in the TFM. As a result, it would be possible to eliminate human participation in transformations from the TFM to models at the lower level of abstraction.

The pervasive nature of location-aware hardware has provided an unprecedented foundation for understanding human behaviour. With a record of historic movement, in the form of geospatial trajectories, extracting locations meaningful to users is commonly performed as a basis for modelling a users' interactions with their environment. Existing literature, however, has scarcely considered the applicability of extracted locations, typically focusing solely on the consequent knowledge acquisition process employed, due to the difficulty of evaluating the output of such unsupervised learning techniques. Towards the goal of ensuring the representativeness of extracted locations, and using location prediction as an example knowledge acquisition process, this work provides a method of automated parameter selection for both location extraction and prediction that ensures both the applicability of the locations extracted and the utility of the predictions performed. Specifically, we: (i) provide a metric for the evaluation of both extracted locations and predictions that characterises the goal of each of these tasks, (ii) frame the process of parameter selection as that of mathematical optimisation through the presented metric, and (iii) discuss characteristics of the metric while demonstrating its applicability over real-world data, location extraction algorithms and prediction techniques.

The system design of enterprise performance evaluation is researched, traditionally, there is no effective business enterprise performance management mathematical model, the quantitative venture evaluation of enterprise performance is difficult, and the science and quantitative analysis of enterprise performance management is absent. For this problem, an improved enterprise management performance evaluation model is proposed based on grey management theory, the multiple linear regression mathematical model of performance management tendency degree is established, the overall design of the system is established based on questionnaire survey and case risk data analysis, the performance management the risk evaluation and the prediction algorithm is designed, the mathematical modelling of enterprise performance management model is obtained based on performance management tendency degree computing, the grey correlation evaluation prediction algorithm is proposed, the model factor is evaluated and estimated, the practical applications is taken as the background, and the simulation is completed, the test and simulation results show that the model can improve the performance of enterprise management level, promote the company related reform and rectification, it has good application value in field of enterprise human resources management.

An insulin infusion pump (IIP) is a critical software-intensive medical device that infuses insulin satisfying patient needs under safety and timing constraints that are appropriate for the treatment of diabetes. This device is used by millions of people around the world. The USA Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has reported several recalls in which IIP failures were responsible for a large number of serious illnesses and deaths. The failures responsible for this harm to people who are dependent on external insulin were caused by the introduction of hardware or software design errors during the system development process. This paper presents an incremental proof-based development of an IIP. We use the Event-B modelling language to formalize the given system requirements. Further, the Rodin proof tools are used to verify the correctness of functional behaviour, internal consistency checking with respect to safety properties, invariants and events. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2015.

The current design of steel-concrete composite floors might be susceptible to resonance phenomenon, causing undesirable vibrations in the frequency range that is the most noticeable to humans, i.e. 4Hz to 8Hz. In addition, it has been observed in design practice low floor structural damping ratios, which is related to the type of construction, materials, presence of non-structural elements, age and quality of the construction. Therefore, all these combinations make composite floors very susceptible to annoying vibrations induced by humans. Hence the main objective of the work, described in this paper, is to investigate the dynamic behaviour of a composite multi-storey building subjected to human rhythmic activities (aerobics). The structural model represents a typical interior floor bay of a commercial building used as a gym and is composed of three floor levels spanning 20m by 20m, with a total area of 3 x 400m2. An extensive parametric study was developed with the aim of obtaining the peak accelerations, RMS and VDV values once the investigated building develops a multi-modal behaviour. Thus, based on two different mathematical formulations used for modelling human rhythmic actions (aerobics), the worst dynamic design cases i.e. a resonance phenomenon, were induced for each natural frequency of the building that lies in the human force frequency range. The human comfort of the building was investigated and the vibration transmissibility related to the steel columns was verified. Based on the results, the composite multistorey building demonstrated high vibration levels that compromise the human comfort. © Civil-Comp Press, 2015.

In this paper we present a new approach in producing realistic saccade eye movement animations by incorporating anatomical details of the oculomotor system into the dynamics of the eye model. Unlike abstract models of the eye motor behaviour, we make use of a biomedical framework to effectively model the eye globe along with the three extraocular muscle pairs in efficient detail, that the application of the corresponding muscle activation signals, naturally results in realistic motions. That way, we avoid the need of explicitly providing trajectory information, and therefore simplify the process of eye animation. Regarding the calculations of the muscle activation signals needed to drive the animation in a way that imitates a real human eye, we are based on existing knowledge about the way that the nervous system utilizes the extraocular muscles during saccades.

Nowadays, pedestrian bridges are increasingly lively and slender structures due to the development of improved structural materials and aesthetic requirements. As a result of this trend, contemporary footbridges are more and more prone to human-induced vertical and lateral vibrations that can compromise the comfort serviceability conditions. The goal of this paper is to characterize the dynamic behaviour of a curved cable-stayed footbridge subjected to pedestrian loads starting from experimental tests and numerical dynamic analyses. The dynamic behaviour of the footbridge is investigated thanks to an experimental campaign performed by means of an advanced MEMS-based SHM system. Accelerations due to ambient vibrations are recorded and the modal parameters of the structure are identified by means of a classic identification method. Then, to investigate the dynamic response of the footbridge subjected to pedestrian actions, a wide number of experimental tests were performed with different-sized groups of pedestrians crossing the footbridge, running, free or synchronized walking with different pacing frequencies. Then, a finite element model of the footbridge is developed and calibrated so that the numerical dynamic predictions agree with the experimental modal properties. Then, to simulate dynamic loading conditions due to a single pedestrian or a crowd of people crossing the footbridge, two mathematical models are examined. In the first approach both the non-calibrated and the updated FE model are adopted to evaluate the vertical dynamic response of the footbridge when subjected to pedestrian loads. Dynamic analyses are performed by simulating the pedestrian walking through a periodic load model representing the human-induced force as a deterministic force. The second approach is based on the solution of the equation of motion via modal decomposition, considering multi-harmonic forces and experimental mode shapes and frequencies. In the current research, a smart grid is considered as a network of distributed interacting nodes represented by renewable energy sources, storage and loads. The source nodes connect or disconnect in a stochastic manner due to the intermittent nature of natural resources such as wind and solar irradiance. Prediction and stochastic modelling of electrical energy flow is a critical task in such a network to achieve load levelling and/or peak shaving in order to minimise the fluctuation between off peak and peak energy demand. The behaviour of source nodes in this grid is modelled and administered through a scheduling strategy control algorithm using the historical data collected from the system. The stochastic model predicts future power consumption/injection to determine the power required for storage components. The proposed stochastic model based on Box-Jenkins method satisfies two major objectives. It predicts the most efficient state of electrical energy flow between a distribution network and nodes as well as minimising the peak demand and off peak consumption of deriving electrical energy from the main grid. MATLAB/Simulink is deployed to simulate the platform. The performance of the models is validated against autoregressive moving average (ARIMA) and Markov Chain models. The results demonstrate that the proposed method outperforms both ARIMA and Markov Chain model. Results are presented, the strengths and limitations of the approach are discussed, and possible future work is described.

Simulation of High Density Pedestrian Flow: A Microscopic Model

In recent years, modelling crowd and evacuation dynamics has become very important, with increasing huge numbers of people gathering around the world for many reasons and events. The fact that our global population grows dramatically every year and the current public transport systems are able to transport large amounts of people heightens the risk of crowd panic or crush. Pedestrian models are based on macroscopic or microscopic behaviour. In this paper, we are interested in developing models that can be used for evacuation control strategies. This model will be based on microscopic pedestrian simulation models, and its evolution and design requires a lot of information and data. The people stream will be simulated, based on mathematical models derived from empirical data about pedestrian flows. This model is developed from image data bases, so called empirical data, taken from a video camera or data obtained using human detectors. We consider the individuals as autonomous particles interacting through social and physical forces, which is an approach that has been used to simulate crowd behaviour. The target of this work is to describe a comprehensive approach to model a huge number of pedestrians and to simulate high density crowd behaviour in overcrowding places, e.g. sport, concert and pilgrimage places, and to assist engineering in the resolution of complicated problems through integrating a number of models from different research domains.
