Unreinforced masonry non-structural infills in RC structures are widely used in many countries. However, they are often designed with simplified methods which do not consider accurately their interaction with the structure. The limitation of their damage induced by earthquakes is of major interest for the prevention of extensive economic losses and possible threats to human lives. During the last decades several researches have been accomplished all around the world, and many different aspects have been investigated. The increasing interest on masonry infill is due to both the observation of unsatisfactory behaviour of infilled frame structures after real earthquakes and the difficulty to reach a widely scientifically recognized solution. Even if measures for the prevention of infill damage are to some extent included in modern seismic design code, an effective design procedure has not yet been achieved. The object of this study is to perform a numerical Finite Element Model simulation of a reinforced concrete frame specimen infilled with unreinforced Autoclaved Aerated Concrete masonry infill, in order to be able to study accurately the influence and the interaction of the non-structural wall to the reinforced concrete frame. A meso-modelling approach has been followed and the calibration has been performed according to the results of in-plane cyclic tests on single bay - single storey bare and infilled frames which have been carried out at the Department of Civil engineering and Architecture of the University of Pavia [1, 3]. In order to obtain the parameters of the infill material, the numerical simulation has been performed, in first instance, with reference to tests of mechanical characterization and to inplane cyclic tests on load-bearing AAC masonry, similar to the one used for the infill [2, 3]. In a demanding environment such as search and rescue, where human-robot collaboration provides potential benefits, understanding complex human behaviour will promote greater success. We propose that robots need to be equipped with embodied models of both human behaviour and the environment. Here we emulate some conditions of a disaster area to test collaboration between a robot and human, with added environmental distraction (noise) and cognitive load. With this setup, we generate empirical data as the basis of human performance modelling, using machine learning techniques. The experiment was repeated in three phases, first to capture baseline data for the basis of the model and later comparison with the second phase, where the robot adapted its working pace based on participants' performance, and the third phase, where the robot instead provided feedback to the participant based on their performance. Results suggest that, in a situation which is tense and stressful for human, having a robot adapting its behaviour towards that of a person can improve the overall success rate of the task at hand.

Recently it has been noted that user behaviour can have a large impact on the final energy consumption in buildings. Through the combination of mathematical modelling and data from wireless ambient sensors, we can model human behaviour patterns and use the information to regulate building management systems (BMS) in order to achieve the best trade-off between user comfort and energy efficiency. In this work, we have modelled user occupancy and activity patterns using Machine Learning approaches. We have applied non-linear multiclass Support Vector Machines (SVMs) to deal with the complex nature of the data collected from various sensors to accurately identify user occupancy and activities of daily living (ADL) patterns. To validate our results, we also used other methodologies (i.e. Hidden-Markov Model and k-Nearest Neighbours). The experimental results show that our proposed approach outperforms the other methods for the scenarios evaluated.

Ceiling fans recirculate air within a space and affects the comfort of the occupant. It is widely used in India. It reduces the perceived temperatures, by assisting cooling by evaporation through skin. Many mathematical models and studies are available, which show the variation of comfort temperatures subsequent calculation of discomfort hours with varying ceiling fan air speed. Studies have also shown deviations of local comfort surveys with the PMV/PPD and ASHRAE Adaptive standards in predicting human comfort. In addition, these comfort indices are not tailored to address Indian climatic context and culture. Therefore referring to the BIS code SP41: 1987 we have used a new methodology to calculate the indoor space conditions and indoor discomfort hours of an actual office building in a hot and humid climate in India, using variable speed ceiling fans. The new method includes modelling of the building's ventilation system in Energy Plus and then subsequently calculates the discomfort hours based on the comfort criteria of SP41:1987 for naturally ventilated buildings. The study concludes by assessing the performances and results achieved in thermal comfort and energy consumption by the building design and spelling out the operation protocol of the building vis- A-vis ventilation and cooling.

The method used for purchasing the corrosion behaviour the WC coatings deposited by plasma spraying, on a martensitic stainless steel substrate consists in measuring the electrochemical potential of the coating, respectively that of the substrate, immersed in a NaCl solution as corrosive agent. The mathematical processing of the obtained experimental results in Matlab allowed us to make some correlations between the electrochemical potential of the coating and the solution temperature is very well described by some curves having equations obtained by interpolation order 4.

Energy gives personal comfort to people, and is essential for the generation of commercial and societal wealth. Nevertheless, energy production and consumption place considerable pressures on the environment, such as the emission of greenhouse gases and air pollutants. They contribute to climate change, damage natural ecosystems and the man-made environment, and cause adverse effects to human health. Lately, novel market schemes emerge, such as the formation and operation of customer coalitions aiming to improve their market power through the pursuit of common benefits. In this paper we present CASSANDRA, an open source1, expandable software platform for modelling the demand side of power systems, focusing on small scale consumers. The structural elements of the platform are a) the electrical installations (i.e. households, commercial stores, small industries etc.), b) the respective appliances installed, and c) the electrical consumption-related activities of the people residing in the installations. CASSANDRA serves as a tool for simulation of real demand-side environments providing decision support for energy market stakeholders. The ultimate goal of the CASSANDRA simulation functionality is the identification of good practices that lead to energy efficiency, clustering electric energy consumers according to their consumption patterns, and the studying consumer change behaviour when presented with various demand response programs. Comparison of different modelling approaches of drive train temperature for the purposes of wind turbine failure detection

Effective condition monitoring techniques for wind turbines are needed to improve maintenance processes and reduce operational costs. Normal behaviour modelling of temperatures with information from other sensors can help to detect wear processes in drive trains. In a case study, modelling of bearing and generator temperatures is investigated with operational data from the SCADA systems of more than 100 turbines. The focus is here on automated training and testing on a farm level to enable an on-line system, which will detect failures without human interpretation. modelling based on linear combinations, artificial neural networks, adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference systems, support vector machines and Gaussian process regression is compared. The selection of suitable modelling inputs is discussed with cross-correlation analyses and a sensitivity study, which reveals that the investigated modelling techniques react in different ways to an increased number of inputs. The case study highlights advantages of modelling with linear combinations and artificial neural networks in a feedforward configuration.

mathematical representations of human control behaviour have played a very important part in manned aviation, especially in the definition of aircraft handling qualities requirements. New challenges posed by advances in aerospace technologies, such as fly-by-wire flight control, large flexible airframes and flight simulation, have led to increasingly complex mathematical representations of pilot behaviour. However, all these areas tend to be investigated separately and in parallel with human factors studies. The motivation behind this review is to promote discussion between the flight dynamicists and other engineers and scientists on the methods of modelling and simulation of today's pilot. A review of pilot model components used for flight control system design that focuses specifically on physiological and manual control aspects is presented in this paper. Models of varying complexity that are considered to be the state-of-the-art within the flight control and handling qualities engineering community are discussed. These include simple sensory models, biomechanics models and complex nonlinear pilot manual control models. In each area, the challenges posed by inter-subject variations and the need to understand the aircraft as a complex man-machine system are highlighted. However, the presented discussion is limited to a thin slice of this field thought to be fundamental to modelling manual control dynamics exhibited by aircraft pilots. (C) 2014 Elsevier Masson SAS. This paper proposes a framework for automated highway driving of an A-double long vehicle combination. The included driving manoeuvres are maintain lane, lane change to right and left lane, abort lane change to right and left lane, and emergency brake. A combined longitudinal and lateral driver model is used for the generation of longitudinal acceleration and steering requests. The behaviour of the driver model, both regarding heuristics and safety thresholds, is inspired by human cognition and optical flow theory. Traffic situation predictions of feasible lane changes are calculated using the driver model in combination with prediction models of the subject and surrounding vehicles. The traffic situation predictions are used for the evaluation of constraints related to vehicle dynamics, road boundaries and distance to surrounding objects. When the framework is started, the subject vehicle is initiated in the maintain lane state respecting the road speed limit and the distance to surrounding objects. A lane change manoeuvre is performed on request from the driver when the corresponding traffic situation prediction and control request become feasible. The framework has been implemented in simulation environment including a high-fidelity vehicle plant model and models of surrounding vehicles. Simulations show that the framework gives anticipated results when initial conditions are varied. Results are shown for maintain lane and lane change manoeuvres at constant longitudinal velocity, varying from 20-80 km/h and lane changes combined with retardation including leading vehicle braking from different initial velocities ranging from 30-80 km/h.
