The improvement of mathematical models for semisolid alloy flow properties requires profound understanding of the underlying physical nature. To date, it is commonly accepted that the shear thinning behaviour of these suspensions is caused by the solid phase microstructure, while the liquid phase is assumed to be Newtonian with a viscosity in the lower mPas-range. Recent measurements however, demonstrate non-Newtonian behaviour of fully liquid metals with pronounced shear thinning and high viscosities (multiple Pas) in the low shear-rate *** gathering and analysing rheological measurement data of various alloys (Sn14.2%Pb, A356 and X210CrW12), the relevance of the new findings for semisolid metals is investigated. The results indicate that the previously unexamined non-Newtonian flow behaviour of the liquid matrix has, besides the solid fraction, the most dominant influence on the shear thinning behaviour of semisolid alloys. The influences of shear-rate and solid fraction are nearly independent of each other which allow the construction of master-curves;a general flow curve for the suspension where the solid fraction is considered by a scaling factor. Consequently, a modelling approach is suggested in which the dependency of solid fraction is considered independently of the shear-rate. © (2015) Trans Tech Publications, Switzerland.

This paper presents our recent research on finding correlation between weather events and medical (cardiologic) events and trends. Such correlation is intuitive, however no solid proof exists. Such correlation was investigated, but it most cases it drives to conclusion that differences are visible in large periods of time (like year seasons, winter for example). We are trying to show, that such correlation is visible in much shorter time periods (as couple of days) with unusual weather behaviour). We examine standard statistical methods, advanced events and trend detection methods and neural networks (self organizing maps) usage. Continuous advances in bridge engineering often result in design of elegant, long-span and lightweight structural forms that fully exploit complementary mechanical properties of steel and concrete materials. These composite steel-concrete structures often possess large span-to-depth ratio that might lead to increased sensitivity to dynamic actions, such as wind and human-induced excitation. To ensure satisfactory performance of these structures against dynamic loading, reliable modes are required. In addition, due to creep and shrinkage of concrete, a reliable evaluation of time-dependent deformation development under long-term static loading is required. This paper describes an analysis of static and dynamic performance of a slender steel-concrete composite bridge situated in the Structures Laboratory at the University of Warwick. The 19.9m long bridge has a high slenderness ratio of 45, and a fundamental vibration mode having natural frequency of 2.5Hz. The static and dynamic behaviour of the bridge has been monitored for a year. Key experimental data are presented in this paper. A number of finite element models are developed in Abaqus software and evaluated against the test data. It was found that detailed modelling of the boundary conditions is crucial for successful prediction of the dynamic properties. Creep and shrinkage effects caused large deformation which could not be captured by the model developed. Therefore, a more sophisticated modelling approach and further studies are necessary to improve modelling of long-term static effects. Subjective vibration assessment concluded that the bridge is serviceable for short vibration exposure, while long exposure in walking posture resulted in increased vibration levels and probability of complaints.

We have applied topic modelling to the full-text British HCI and CHI corpora in order to automatically derive one hundred topics and their trends. We use these to compare the distributions of topics and changing foci of two conferences over the last five years. These data suggest that that, while the two conferences have significant overlap, they make quite distinct contributions to HCI. © The Authors.

This paper presents preliminary results from turbulence modelling in channels. Identifying key characteristics of turbulence within tidal flows and providing a basis for further study of turbine specific turbulence behaviour. Numerical simulations have been performed using Code_Saturne [1], EDFs open source finite-volume code. Comparisons of Large Eddy Simulation and unsteady-averaged Navier Stokes methods for capturing the turbulence signatures present in empty channel flow are presented. Paying particular attention to resolved power spectral density distributions of turbulence. As well as vorticity isoplane analysis. Synthetic eddy inlet conditions [2] were used to model fully turbulent flow at the inlet. Results of numerical simulations of a test flume are presented using three turbulence modelling techniques - LES, R-ij - epsilon SSG and k - epsilon. It is found that the k - epsilon model performed most poorly at resolving the turbulent eddies. Whilst the R-ij - epsilon SSG model is proven to be a possible alternative to the more computationally expensive LES model when looking at large to mid scale turbulence. Analysis of viscosity isoplanes indicates that both the R-ij - epsilon SSG and k - epsilon turbulence models dampened out large scale turbulence at a greater rate than the LES model - though a reasonably similar distribution of turbulent eddies still propagated downstream with the R-ij - epsilon SSG model. Whilst the results from all three models could benefit from further mesh refinement the turbulent forces acting across a hypothetical turbine region is show to be anti-symmetric. This anti-symmetry across the rotor plane requires further study and inclusion in wake-mixing models used in tidal farm layout tools.

Rain drainage in urban catchments is highly complex and depends on numerous and widespread restrictions to water flows caused by the layout of urban areas and building morphology, as well as by the size of sewers which are usually designed for low return period values (2 10 years). The higher the rainfall return period, the higher the influence of such limitations and the correspondent hydrographs show reductions in peak values due to the reservoir effect generated by flood waters. The modelling of such processes is based on mathematical algorithms of transients associated with rainfall-runoff phenomena and with 1D/2D flow routing processes that, during more intense rainfall, occur simultaneously in the sewer and on the surface (dual drainage systems). However, when flood risk planning relates to the catchment scale for a vast territory with many urban areas, the model no longer focuses on a detailed simulation of what happens inside each urban area, but rather on an estimate of the main characteristics of the urban floods and of the hydrographs discharged into the receivers. In this case, it is necessary to use simpler models, but which are still able to provide a reliable representation of such phenomena. For such purpose, the conceptual model URBFEP (URBan Flood Equivalent Pipe) has been developed in order to obtain a reliable representation of these restricted urban flood processes. This model is presented here, demonstrating its ability to represent the real behaviour of urban sub-catchments in comparison to the results obtained in physically based simulations in a set of real urban areas selected as pilot cases. The inverted pendulum is a classical control problem, which is an absolutely unstable system with the characteristics of higher-order, unstable, multivariable, nonlinear and strong coupling. There can be varieties of methods to be applied to control inverted pendulum system, such as PID control, optimal control, robust control, sliding mode control, fuzzy control, neural network control, human-imitating intelligent control. In this paper, firstly by using the principle of Newtonian mechanics, the mathematical model of the inverted pendulum system was established and the differential equations and state space representation were derived. Secondly, a controller was designed by using the Linear Quadratic Regulator (LQR) cost equation. Thirdly, the PID controller was designed in which the tuning of the PID parameters was focused. Finally, the simulation results show the inverted pendulum could be balanced with the both controllers. © 2014. The authors - Published by Atlantis Press.

Farm mechanisation is a practice of doing work on agricultural farms by means of machinery instead of human or animal labour. Land preparation, tillage, planting and harvesting operations are all farm practices that have been mechanized. Three forms of bed preparation are commonly used in farming namely;flat, heaps and ridges. Ridge-making has been mechanised, leaving heaping to be done manually using the locally fabricated hand-made hoe. In this research work, an attempt is made to design a four-bar mechanism to give the required working part motion for soil heaping operation. The angles and distance of the four positions were obtained and specified as input for the synthesis of the four-bar mechanism using four-position synthesis programmed in MATLABTM and the link lengths calculated were input to Automated Dynamic Analysis of Mechanical Systems (ADAMS) to simulate the behaviour of the mechanism from which the best design was selected. Results suggested that the method of four-position synthesis could be used to design an appropriate mechanism for the heaping operation. The mechanical advantage of the mechanisms obtained was in the range 0.5 - 2.1. Different parameters of interest like the output force were also obtained for each of the mechanisms.

Tsunami may pose severe damages on the structures and cause loss of human lives. In this paper, a comparative study on the numerical simulation of tsunami wave loads on 3D onshore structures is carried out using the meshless local Petrov-Galerkin method based on Rankine source solution (MLPG-R) and the commercial computational fluid dynamic software StarCCM+. In this study, the tsunami wave is simplified as a collapsing water column. The results indicate that both methods have a similar accuracy level for modelling violent wave impacts but the former has better convergent property and much higher computational efficiency compared to the latter. The effects of a water pool in reducing the tsunami wave impacts are discussed. Copyright © 2014 by the International Society of Offshore and Polar Engineers (ISOPE).

Angiogenesis, the formation of de novo blood vessels, has been implicated in many human diseases, including cancer, diabetes, and in recent years, neurodegenerative diseases. Study of the formation of microvasculature, therefore, has important implications in diagnosis and treatment of diseases. This paper describes how we combine a CPU-based Cellular Potts model of sprouting angiogenesis in three dimensions with medical imaging techniques and fluid dynamics equations to create an individual-based GPU accelerated angiogenesis simulation. The use of GPU, optimized for fast, highly parallel mathematical operations, provides an increase in simulation speed and balances resource requirements across hardware. Specifically, micro-CT scans of resin cast rat cerebral vasculature are segmented and imported to instantiate nascent endothelial cells in a homogeneous three-dimensional grid representing the area over which the simulation is performed. A growth factor source is added, and simulation of steady production and diffusion of the vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) is performed on the GPU on the NVidia Compute Unified Device Architecture (CUDA) programming platform. Motion of individual endothelial cells is then tracked over the lifetime of the simulation towards the source of growth factor.
