Paper describes the creation of mathematical model for active damped mechanical structure. The model is consisting of differential equations for structure's motion and an equation of the control loop. This model is used to design and examination the control loop algorithm and for testing the behaviour of the whole system before applying it on the real structure.

Prokaryotic bacteria are a widespread group of organisms on Earth. Bacteria inhabit practically all environments where some liquid water is present. Bacteria form structures such as biofilms and play a significant role in infections in the human body. In order to understand the behaviour of bacteria systems it is important to understand the behaviour of a single bacterium first. A bacterium is considered as an active particle and the numerical task of describing the interaction of a bacterium with a substrate is solved by applying the discrete element method. One of the factors influencing the stability of a biofilm structure are adhesion forces which allow keeping the bacteria system sticked together. The present theoretical investigation gives a characterisation of the influence of adhesion on a bacterium. The adhesion force is described by the van der Waals force by applying a recently developed adhesive-dissipative model. The investigation presents the theoretical behaviour of the bacterium interaction while different models such as DMT and DLVO are used. Obtained results show the approach and deformation process of an adhesive-dissipative bacterium by presenting force displacement diagrams.

Electric vehicles and hybrid electric vehicles are rapidly gaining popularity as an important means of decarbonizing the transport sector in tackling sustainable energy supply and environment pollution problems. To build a proper battery model is essential in predicting battery behaviour under various operating conditions for avoiding unsafe battery operations and in developing proper controlling algorithms and maintenance strategies. This paper presents a comprehensive review of battery modelling methods. In particular, the mechanism and characteristics of Li-ion batteries are presented, and different modelling methods are discussed. Considering that equivalent electric circuit models are most widely used in the battery management system, a detailed analysis of the modelling procedure is presented.

The motivation for this paper comes from a real need to have an overview about the challenges of modelling and control for very demanding systems, such as wind turbine systems, which require reliability, availability, maintainability, and safety over power conversion efficiency. These issues have begun to stimulate research and development in the wide control community particularly for these installations that need a high degree of 'sustainability'. Note that this topic represents a key point mainly for offshore wind turbines with very large rotors, since they are characterised by challenging modelling and control problems, as well as expensive and safety critical maintenance works. In this case, a clear conflict exists between ensuring a high degree of availability and reducing maintenance times, which affect the final energy cost. On the other hand, wind turbines have highly nonlinear dynamics, with a stochastic and uncontrollable driving force as input in the form of wind speed, thus representing an interesting challenge also from the modelling point of view. Suitable control methods can provide a sustainable optimisation of the energy conversion efficiency over wider than normally expected working conditions. Moreover, a proper mathematical description of the wind turbine system should be able to capture the complete behaviour of the process under monitoring, thus providing an important impact on the control design itself. In this way, the control scheme could guarantee prescribed performance, whilst also giving a degree of 'tolerance' to possible deviation of characteristic properties or system parameters from standard conditions, if properly included in the wind turbine model itself. The most important developments in advanced controllers for wind turbines are addressed, and open problems in the areas of modelling of wind turbines are also outlined.

In recent times, the robotic vacuum cleaner Roomba has become popular in households. However, it might bump into or impede humans because it lacks the ability to recognize them. This study aims to provide Roomba with a human avoidance function through the use of environmental sensors. These sensors detect the positions of both a human and Roomba. Then, the sensors calculate and transmit the velocity depending on the distance between the two positions as predicted by using a Kalman filter. Roomba, upon receiving this data, can use it to avoid him/her. This study experimentally demonstrates that Roomba can use the proposed human avoidance function, effectively.

In this paper, an independent neural networks is constructed for modelling and to perform fault diagnosis of a proton exchange membrane fuel cell systems which has a nonlinear behaviour. The fault detection is investigated based on the residual generation. The difference between the model and the process plant gives the modelling prediction errors which later been used in detecting faults occurring in the systems. The RBF network acts as a classifier to perform fault isolation. The faults are introduced in a simulator model of fuel cell systems developed by University of Michigan where five faults are introduced in online simulation. The simulation results show that both neural network models able to detect and isolate five faults accordingly under open-loop scheme and the results are almost similar.
