Changes in the velocity and direction of wind, causes to change in the turbine input power and in turn, affects the operation of the system, for instance; output voltage, power and torque of an islanded wind turbine changes proportional to wind speed variations. Therefore, accurate and reliable forecasting systems for wind speed are widely recognized as a major contribution for increasing wind penetration. This paper provides a wind speed forecasting method in order to analysis and modelling the behaviour of wind. Wind speed is first modelled considering superposition of mean speed and turbulence components then the effect of the rotor as a low- pass shaping filter is studied. This procedure could be implemented on a wind turbine simulator on account of numerical and experimental results. Finally the outcome model is applied to the wind turbine and then all procedure is simulated using MATLAB codes.

Performance of electronic sensors used for physical measurements is highly depends upon the operating conditions. Environmental changes e.g., temperature variations do affect the sensor outputs especially for those which are used for very precise measurement. The effect of temperature variation from ambient to the harsh drastically degrades the electronic sensor output performance e.g., piezoelectric sensor in our case. It is very hard to model the output variation of piezoelectric sensor whose output is non-deterministic or random in nature and it also change with temperature. Normal mathematical modelling techniques to correct error are very difficult to implement due to complexity and nonlinearity. Data has been acquired from piezoelectric sensor used for pressure measurement whose output variation is random in nature with respect to the temperature variations. The scope of this paper is to study the behaviour of piezoelectric sensor output signal taking into consideration the different varying temperature profiles. Artificial intelligence technique like Fuzzy is used to minimize the error up to desirable amount. The novelty in our work is that Fuzzy approach has been implemented on this kind of engineering problem. Results have been compared with mathematical technique i.e., curve fitting based upon the error correction criterion. Fuzzy approach has shown significant improvement in error minimization of piezoelectric sensor as compared to the mathematical techniques.

A possible solution to address the problem of Scorpion stings is the capability of detecting its presence earlier before it stings. This paper presents efforts in Scorpion detection using substrate vibration modelling approach. An eight stage approach has been presented in this work. Using sinusoidal signal, signal representing Scorpion behaviour was firstly sampled and then amplified before transmitting to a nearby receiving module. The received signal undergoes filtering for noise removal before being modelled for coefficients determination. The computed coefficients were then clustered for analysis of behavioural determination. Results obtained in this work show that the proposed technique can be used for Scorpion detection.

This paper presents an outline of human-human interaction (HHI) to establish a framework to understand how a behaviour based approach can be developed in the design of a human-robot interaction (HRI) strategy. To approach the conceptual design guidelines for a HRI control strategy, the human dynamic model of human behaviour during performing an object transfer task without any types of communication has been strategically analysed. The extended crossover model proposed by McRuer [1] has been applied to identify the human arm characteristic models under various conditions when executing cooperative tasks. A set of compliant-object-handover tasks have been designed and conveyed (based on Box-Behnken test design[1]), along with the influence variables affecting the human forces, consisting of mass, friction and target displacement. According to the results, the McRuer crossover models were appropriately estimated and reported to be in good matching with the actual experimental data. Additionally, it can be found that a loop gain (KH) is inversely proportional to the object distance moved and is associated with a faster response. The best-fit percentages of human force profiles are almost 100%; therefore, the proposed models can be used to present the human arm characteristics effectively.

Defining shape of membership function for Mamdani’s Fuzzy Inference System within park & ride share modelling

The conducted survey were aimed on estimation of the number of potential Park and Ride users. The system is not popular in Poland and it is difficult to estimate (and calibrate) modal split function based on Stated Preferences survey. Because fuzzy approach can be justified in the case of rough data and significant impact of human factors, it is difficult to estimate necessary functions using traditional mathematical approach. It seems, that fuzzy methodology can be treated as a proper way to describe choice of mode of transport, especially in case of Park and Ride trips. The proposed approach is based on the Mamdani Fuzzy Inference System, where, as the part of the model, the membership functions were estimated according to the experts’ survey. The survey had two level verification using Delphic approach and final results were obtained as an approximation of shapes of the functions proposed by experts. The methodology were tested on the real system implemented in Warsaw. The paper will present procedure for membership function estimation, application of the model. For calculation there was used Matlab software, with Fuzzy Logic Toolbox. Main goal of the paper is to present complexity and uncertainty of the modal split modeling process.

This paper presents a bio-inspired methodology for improving glucose sensor performance for control of diabetes through modelling of the beta-cells of the pancreas. Specifically we utilise the noise shaping capability of gap junction coupling which is capable of synchronising β-cell behaviour to a varying glucose sensor input and reduce random noise. We show that through gap junction coupling of up to 8 cells we can improve sensor performance through a reduction in standard deviation of a glucose sensor signal by 74%. Additionally we present simulations to show how gap junction coupling of silicon β-cells can improve implementation in CMOS through reduction in variation due to mismatch in devices. These improvements will allow more accurate glucose sensing for use in a bio-inspired artificial pancreas.

The incorporation of real human behaviour for nonplayer characters(NPCs) in games is a significant research challenge. The nature of events and actions within a game scenario is associated with temporal and spatial redundancies. Such data cannot be considered in isolation, and should be processed in sequence. Multi Agent Systems are proposed as a potential technology to model natural human behaviour into non player characters in game environments. A three phase solution is proposed for this purpose. During the first phase real data in a game are collected by letting a human player play the game unconditionally and naturally as possible. All objects around the player and each action executed by the player are recorded against the time. The second phase involves the cleaning and normalization of the noise present within data gathered during phase 1. Then for each sequence, data is modelled as HMM along with the player's current action. Rules are generated with these HMM and player actions. The NPC decision making strategy, consequently are implemented by agents using these rules. HMMs are mapped as resource agents and the NPC in the game is mapped as a request agent. Based on the observation sequence that NPC receives, it broadcasts this information to the resource agents and bids for the best deal and tries to find the most suitable state sequence(that is action sequence). Jade is used as the agent framework and Jahmm is used for HMM modelling. As the test bed(simulation platform) of this experiment, Virtual Battle Space2(VBS2) along with the VBS2 Fusion library is used to prototype the approach. The validity of the proposed method is verified by experiments and analysis by statistical methods. Angiogenesis, the formation of de novo blood vessels, has been implicated in many human diseases, including cancer, diabetes, and in recent years, neurodegenerative diseases. Study of the formation of microvasculature, therefore, has important implications in diagnosis and treatment of diseases. This paper describes how we combine a CPU-based Cellular Potts model of sprouting angiogenesis in three dimensions with medical imaging techniques and fluid dynamics equations to create an individual-based GPU accelerated angiogenesis simulation. The use of GPU, optimized for fast, highly parallel mathematical operations, provides an increase in simulation speed and balances resource requirements across hardware. Specifically, micro-CT scans of resin cast rat cerebral vasculature are segmented and imported to instantiate nascent endothelial cells in a homogeneous three-dimensional grid representing the area over which the simulation is performed. A growth factor source is added, and simulation of steady production and diffusion of the vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) is performed on the GPU on the NVidia Compute Unified Device Architecture (CUDA) programming platform. Motion of individual endothelial cells is then tracked over the lifetime of the simulation towards the source of growth factor.

Fish swimming demonstrates impressive speeds and exceptional characteristics in the fluid environment. The objective of this paper is to mimic undulatory swimming behaviour and its control in a body caudal fin (BCF) carangiform fish in a robotic counterpart. Based on fish biology a 2-level behavior based control scheme is proposed. High level control is modeled by robotic fish swimming behavior. It uses a Lighthill (LH) body wave to generate desired joint trajectory patterns. LH wave has intrinsic kinematic parameters Tail-beat frequency (TBF) and Caudal amplitude (CA) which can be modulated to change this trajectory. Parameter information is retrieved from a biological fish memory inspired brain map. This map stores operating region information on TBF and CA parameters. Based on a environment based error feedback signal robotic fish map selects the right parameter/s value showing adaptive behaviour. A finite state machine methodology has been used to model this brain-kinematic-map control. Low level control is implemented using computed torque method (CTM) with dynamic PD compensation, to track encoded patterns (trajectory) for fish-tail undulation. Three types of parameter adaptation for the two chosen parameters have been shown to successfully emulate fish swimming behavior. Joint-position tracking results are found to be satisfactory. Error magnitudes are smaller and its convergence is fast.
