Malicious Attacks and defenses for Deep-Reinforcement-Learning-Based Dynamic Spectrum Access

Dynamic spectrum access (DSA) is a technology proposed to address issues, such as spectrum scarcity, inflexible spectrum management, and spectrum waste in wireless communication. This is crucial in supporting the escalating demands of spectrum particularly for Internet of Things (IoT)-based applications. modeling the spectrum access problem as a Markov decision process (MDP) and incorporating deep reinforcement learning (DRL) have emerged as a cutting-edge approach to tackle this challenge. However, the application of DRL in spectrum access is vulnerability to malicious attacks, posing significant security threats. We introduce both glass-box adversarial attack and closed-box jamming attack over-the-air to assess the susceptibility of DRL-based spectrum access system. The simulation results demonstrate the destructive effect of these attack methods in disrupting the spectrum access process of DRL models, adversely affecting the overall performance of communication systems. Moreover, we propose effective defense mechanisms to mitigate potential threats posed by adversary on DRL-based spectrum access. By incorporating advanced defense mechanisms, we successfully enhance the robustness of the system, ensuring the secure and stable operation of the spectrum access system.

Different kinds of underwater vehicles are widely used in oceanographic research, marine resource exploration and naval defense. Docking operation is an essential task that can facilitate better energy supply and information exchange for underwater vehicle. This paper proposes a novel docking method for underwater vehicle-manipulator system (UVMS) based on manipulator-aided operation, and modeling and dynamic simulation are implemented by multi-body technique. The manipulator mounted on the underwater vehicle is applied to grasp the assisted docking handle, and the connector positioned on the underwater vehicle is driven to the docking station point only through the motion of manipulator joints. In the docking process, the configuration of the UVMS transforms from a floating base multi-body system into a serial manipulator with a fixed endeffector. The kinematic and dynamic models of the underwater vehicle equipped with the underwater manipulator are developed. By planning the motion of the manipulator, the processes of approaching, grasping, and mating operation under manipulator-aided are simulated. The dynamic analysis of the whole docking process is given, and the simulation results suggest that the novel docking method has the advantages of high efficiency and strong environment adaptability.

Active defense technology is an effective method to address multiple attack threats in industrial control systems, which affects the evolution of offensive and defensive confrontation through various mechanisms. However, how to comprehensively measure its security effectiveness under unified security indicators remains an urgent problem to be solved. This paper proposes a security evaluation method based on the attack-defense graph method to conduct the formal analysis and security risk evaluation of the role of both attack and defense in complex industrial control system scenarios. Different from the previous method of calculating attack risk, we propose an accumulated approach for attack success rates under different attack frequencies, simulating the trend of system attack risk changing over time. According to the characteristics of active defense techniques like honeypots, simulate and analyze the impact of different deployment positions on attack risk. The experimental results show that the deployment of three honeypots in different hierarchies extended the time-to-compromise by 24.4% compared to the deployment in the same hierarchy. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.
