Free-space optical (FSO) communication has attracted significant interest recently. This technology can potentially complement or be an integral part of next-generation networks. FSO links provide several advantages compared to conventional radio frequency links, including higher data rates, license-free spectrum, and power efficiency. Furthermore, they could be used to access users in remote areas where optical fiber communications are unavailable. Here, we present a simulation framework for modeling, designing, and analyzing classical and quantum communication systems over terrestrial and satellite free-space optical links. We address different FSO use cases in terrestrial, ground-to-satellite, satellite-to-ground, and inter-satellite links using direct- and coherent detection schemes. For the FSO channel modeling, we discuss two methods. The first approach considers atmospheric scintillation, pointing errors, the Doppler effect, attenuation due to the beam diffraction, and scintillation-induced divergence. The second method captures the wavefront of the optical beam using the phase screens technique, which provides a more detailed description of the signal propagation. Additionally, we provide essential details about system-level simulations to analyze and optimize the entire link performance. Finally, we discuss the simulation environment for designing quantum-key distribution (QKD) systems as an FSO use case. Using this simulation framework, we investigate the performance of several different FSO application examples: a terrestrial link with spatial diversity receivers, inter-satellite communication from low Earth to geostationary orbit, and a polarization-encoded BB84 with decoy states QKD over a satellite downlink.

The understanding of processes that govern soot production in aero-engines is fundamental for the design of new combustion systems with low environmental impact. For this, the development of numerical models that allow for soot accurate prediction for a limited computational cost is required. Many combustors, more specifically those used in aero-engines, feature rich flame regions typically exploited in the so-called Rich-Quench-Lean (RQL) technology. Thus, it is important to complete the data on soot formation in turbulent flames that exist in the literature, by considering rich turbulent flames operating in the premixed mode. To this purpose, a model scale swirled combustor, called EM2Soot, was designed at the EM2C laboratory to analyze soot production under perfectly premixed rich conditions. In this work, the effect of the equivalence ratio on soot production in this burner is experimentally characterized and numerically simulated. Measurements of Planar laser Induced Fluorescence of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PLIF-PAH) were performed to examine soot precursors presence, whereas soot volume fraction is measured with Planar laser Induced Incandescence (LII). Large Eddy simulations (LES) are carried out using an analytically-reduced chemistry for the gas phase simulation in combination with a three-equation model for the solid phase description. By considering a range of equivalence ratios, the soot volume fraction from the experiments was found to reach a maximum near phi = 1.8, whereas a lower level of soot volume fraction was measured for lower and for higher equivalence ratios. The large eddy simulations performed in parallel are found to be in qualitative agreement with experimental data in terms of PAHs location and soot presence. The soot volume fractions f(v) are notably overestimated with respect to the LII measurements, suggesting the need for improved modeling schemes. The use of laser technology in high-speed train headlight systems effectively addresses the problems of insufficient brightness, short life and high energy consumption associated with traditional halogen lamps. laser headlights offer higher brightness, longer life and lower energy consumption, significantly improving the safety of trains operating at night. However, the waste heat generated by laser diodes can lead to temperature increases, which can affect beam quality and output power, and even cause damage to the laser medium. Therefore, thermal management of laser diodes becomes a critical issue. This paper uses COMSOL simulation to optimize the thermal management of laser headlights to control operating temperatures, suppress thermal lensing effects, and ensure the safety and efficiency of high-speed trains during nighttime operation.

This paper addresses the modeling and analysis of a new bidirectional isolated dc-dc converter (BIDC) based on a multilevel inverter topology. The novelty of the study is the utilization of the reduced switch five-level inverter topology instead of the conventional full-bridge dual active bridge. It has the advantage of lower voltage/current stress on the switches at higher voltages as compared to traditional BIDCs. power transfer between primary and secondary sides is controlled by PI controller-based single phase shift (SPS) modulation technique. The proposed converter stands out for having: i) employing a reduced number of switches compared to other multilevel inverter-based bidirectional dc-dc converter topologies ii) high voltage gain iii) low harmonic level iv) suitable for integrating multiple input multiple output electrical systems and to be used in bipolar dc microgrid applications. In order to validate the performance of the proposed converter, a simulation model has been developed in Matlab/Simulink environment. The performance of the suggested converter and the controller scheme under steady-state and dynamic conditions have been revealed through the simulation results. © 2022 IEEE.

Recuperators with design temperatures at and above 800 degrees C can further increase the thermal efficiency of supercritical CO2 power cycles by enabling higher turbine exhaust temperatures. Mar-M247 is a well-suited nickel-based superalloy for high temperature service due to its high creep strength that prevents excessive material thickness being required for pressure containment. While not compatible with the diffusion bonding process due to its low ductility, additive manufacturing using a high-speed laser directed energy deposition (DED) process presents a promising solution with the ability to produce non-conventional flow channels for enhanced heat transfer. A design process is presented that includes aerothermal and mechanical evaluation to maximize performance within the constraints of the manufacturing process. The conceptual design stage evaluates the feasibility of numerous heat transfer concepts from a unit cell perspective. A 2-D heat transfer network and pressure drop code allows prediction of flow distribution in each passage and its effect on overall thermal performance. Established literature correlations, along with CFD simulation, inform the prediction of heat transfer coefficients and friction factors for the flowpaths and enhancement features in the heat exchanger core. Sizing codes for the heat exchanger distribute wall thicknesses for pressure containment according to creep life data for Mar-M247. Mechanical evaluation using FEA modeling with the intent of the ASME BPVC Section VIII, Div 2 assesses the operational safety of the design. The capabilities of the laser DED process and the build strategy for minimizing total build time is discussed, along with the results of build trials that evaluate the settings of the powder nozzle and laser and their effect on deposition rate and susceptibility to build defects. The conventional wired charging arrangement utilized for ship-to-shore charging of underwater vehicles is susceptible to specific issues concerning unreliable connection mechanisms and safety concerns. This research article introduces an innovative approach involving system-level modeling and design of wireless power transmission for marine applications. The proposed configuration comprises three primary elements: (a) a mobile transmitter located on the shore (Shore-SMT), (b) a stationary receiver situated onboard, and (c) an additional mobile transmitter on the ship side (Ship-SMT). The concurrent rotation of the dual magnetic transmitters in proximity to the receiver coil conductor generates induced voltage, which is conducive to safe operation in a marine setting. The COMSOL® Multi-Physics environment is employed to model and simulate the proposed system utilizing the finite element method (FEM). © 2023 IEEE.

This paper aims to develop a low-cost laser engraving machine. Materials like plastics, acrylic, glass, wood, cardboard, and leather have been used to engrave desired inputs. It have been found that this laser engraving process has a higher precision and accuracy as compared to traditional embellishing and embossing. The laser beam acquires thermal energy, which emerges from the machine and engraves the material. CREO 2.0 software is used for the 3D modeling and simulation of the machine. Arduino and different controller boards are tried and used in assembling the machine in less time. Different dependency and dimensional tests are conducted in order to validate the machine. The results are found to be satisfactory in terms of quality and cost. The final assembly is experimentally verified which is based on a 2D gantry that is mounted with a laser LED payload for laser engraving on various compatible materials.

The increasing demand in the communication and navigation satellite industry for i) greater throughput, ii) flexibility in terms of signal generation, iii) higher efficiency, iv) improved payload reconfigurability, has generated the need to develop more accurate simulation/emulation payload models. Inaccurate modelling of payload elements induces a non-negligible risk of over- or under-designed elements as well as an incorrect prediction of the main KPIs derived from emulation/simulation tools. Therefore, assessing the accuracy of currently used models and possibly developing new, more accurate ones turns out to be an essential feature of new-generation system design tools to derive accurate performance metrics, to enable correct dimensioning of all system features, to better specify budget parameters (in particular equipment specifications), and to efficiently support engineers in payload design. In this respect, High-power Amplifiers (HPAs) are very sensitive components within the overall payload architecture, because they are non-linear devices that behave differently depending on the input signal features such as occupied bandwidth, average power, Peak -to-Average power Ratio (PAPR), etc.. Extensive measurement and characterization activities on such devices performed in Thales-Alenia Space laboratories on GNSS payloads suggested that the standard narrowband/memoryless model of an HPA (i.e., AM/AM and AM/PM characteristics) is not sufficiently representative to derive accurate results concerning (next generation) GNSS signals featuring bandwidth up to 100 MHz or more, especially in terms of the in-band and out-of-band distortions actually introduced by this element. Such inaccuracy, initially considered insignificant, turned out to be not negligible when the payload simulation model is used to define and optimize the specifications as well the on-board Navigation Signal Generation Unit (NSGU) design. In this paper, we present our new design of a thermoelectric cooling driver for laser projection systems. It is a reliable, effective cooling solution for semiconductor laser diodes that are used instead of traditional displays or projectors when higher brightness or contrast is required. Typical applications are multimedia shows, quality improvement in production facilities or marketing in public areas. The laser animations usually require rapid changes in the output power that are difficult to predict. Our driver is capable of reacting to them by actively pumping the excess power generated by the diodes into the main heatsink of the system. The heat transfer speed is regulated by the driver in real time to maintain an optimum working temperature.

A control-oriented model for melt-pool volume in laser powder bed fusion additive manufacturing

Control of part geometry to achieve desired geometric accuracy is critical for fabrication of complex components via laser-based additive manufacturing (AM) processes. Especially for laser Powder Bed Fusion (LPBF) AM, which uses laser heat source with a much smaller focus diameter and builds parts with much finer resolution, the requirement on geometric accuracy poses additional challenges. For example, simulating a LPBF process using finite-element analysis (FEA) requires significantly higher computation power and time compared to simulating other AM processes such as the direct energy deposition (DED) processes, which makes FEA models difficult to use for real-time control and/or optimization. This paper aims to develop an analytical, control-oriented model on the dynamics of melt-pool volume in building a multi-track part using LPBF. The derivation of the melt-pool dynamics starts from a lumped-parameter-based governing equation on the energy balance of the molton puddle, combined with characterization of thermal history and temperature contributions from past tracks. Based on this analytical model on melt-pool volume, a nonlinear inverse-dynamics controller is designed to adjust laser power such that the melt-pool volume is regulated to a constant set point during the build process of a multi-track part. The performance of the control is evaluated by FEA using Autodesk’s Netfabb Local simulation. This proof-of-concept study lays the initial foundation for developing more advanced control-oriented models for melt-pool geometry in LPBF and future work includes experimental evaluation of the proposed modeling and control design.
