Graphene is an arrangement of graphite atoms tucked in a single layer and a promising wonderful material for various applications. It has amazing capabilities in terms of conductivity, robustness, thermal conductivity, great electron mobility etc. It is a strong material yet lightweight and flexible. This 2D material is million times smaller than human hair. It is showing numerous advantages over conventional material silicon and a potential replacement. Its extraordinary properties have been explored which are consequently useful in fuel-cells, super-capacitors, transportation, defense, medicine, energy, photovoltaic devices and many more. This paper reflects the properties of this wonderful material followed by the applications in different domains of life. The primary focus is the extensive exploration of graphene applications in electronics. The focus of this review is on electronic applications of graphene and its derivatives in numerous arenas like fuel cells, supercapacitors, batteries, photovoltaic devices, photonic devices etc. and how graphene made these already in use appliances more efficient and improve research in this direction.

The design of photonic/opto-electronic structures is a crucial field of research due to the wide range of applications in which these devices are utilized, such as communications, sensing and imaging. The traditional approach to design, which involves numerical simulation and iterative adjustments, is both time-consuming and computationally intensive. The ability to design-emulate photonic structures quickly and efficiently could bring new technologies to market at a faster pace and can also facilitate the process of extracting critical performance metrics from complex fabricated devices. The Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Laser (VCSEL) and its use as a transmitter broadly used in data center interconnects is an example of a rather complex nonlinear system also exhibiting bandwidth limitation mechanisms attributed to its frequency response and parasitic effects, and thus its numerical simulation based on conventional rate equations can only partially approximate its behavior. When it comes to modelling fabricated devices, such physical models are notoriously difficult to parameterize in order to fit to observed laboratory data; in contrast, the emulation of the experimentally recorded behavior with the use of nonlinear models based on neural networks provides a much more efficient path to modelling, and with potentially higher prediction accuracy [1]. In this work, two types of bidirectional recurrent neural networks (RNN), namely Long Short-Term Memory (bi-LSTM) and Vanilla (bi-VRNN) were used to simulate the dynamic behavior of an experimentally characterized VCSEL-based, PAM-4 transmitter, exhibiting a high prediction accuracy approaching 100%.

Reliability of Li-ion batteries (LIB) is major concern for FHE devices due to needs of flexibility without degradation of state of health (SOH) of the LIB. In this regard, a thin form factor based LIB below 1mm of thickness is regarded as the candidate material to meet such needs because it is able to be fold, bent and twisted with limited performance drop. In addition to this, LIB has high specific power (W/Kg) and high specific energy (Wh/Kg) and a lower memory effect which could make the LIB more attractive for wearable applications. While studies on chemo-physical effect such as SEI growth, material decay, etc. due to repeated charging and discharging LIB has been conducted greatly, but such effects due to the flexing LIB have been rarely conducted. In this study, degradation of thin flexible power source reliability has been studied under twist, flexing, flex-to-install of magnitude to replicate stresses of daily motion of human body using motion-control setups in a lab-environment. Additionally, AI-based regression model has been developed to predict the SOH of the battery with multiple variables including physical, ambient and chemo-mechanical experimental conditions which could be challenged to be treated by the manpower. The developed models can be used to predict the life of the battery and analyze acceleration factors between test conditions and use conditions for variety of test conditions based on the individual variables and their interactions.

A double-check tandem network is presented for the inverse design of electromagnetic devices in an instantaneous manner. Based on the reported tandem network model, we use two or more pre-trained forward models to train the inverse model sequentially. Such method is employed for the inverse design of photonic band structures. The results show that the double-check tandem network model eliminates the dependence of bounded activation functions and overcomes the vanishing gradient problem.

The dual Active Bridge (DAB) is getting greater attention in the research area after the introduction of Wide Band Gap devices for high frequency power converters. The DAB is one of the bidirectional converters in the High Voltage (HV) DC to Low Voltage (LV) DC conversion with galvanic isolation, is widely preferred for industry applications. The Power flow between the active converters is established by popular phase shift control. The reduction of switching losses by Zero Voltage Switching (ZVS) and Zero Current Switching (ZCS) techniques is not simultaneously possible in the phase shift control by keeping the LV side DC voltage constant. Hence, higher losses and reduction in efficiency. In this paper a modified phase shift control is proposed with ZVS control loop to judiciously maintain the ZVS/ZCS for the HV side converter active switches. The proposed control dynamically controls the LV side DC voltage for varying load to supplement the required reactive power from the LV side of the converter. This paper mainly emphasizes on the estimation of ZVS control for varying load and the controller implementation in the real time control hardware. The control implementation methodology is discussed with the support of necessary experimental results presented in the paper

A multifunctional hexagonal lattice dual-core photonic crystal fiber (DC-PCF) with elliptical air-hole around the cores is designed for optical communications. Numerical analysis of the proposed structure suggests that the DC- PCF is highly birefringent and single-moded in the standard operating wavelengths of optical communications. It can be used as a polarization splitter for the two orthogonal modes at a length of 39.8 mm at 1550 nm wavelength, and as a WDM MUX-DeMUX for both horizontal and vertical polarization fundamental modes at the lengths of 9.9 mm and 16.65 mm, respectively, to separate the 1300 nm and 1550 nm wavelengths. Hence, the proposed DC-PCF, with a low splice loss of around 3 dB at 1300 nm and 1550 nm wavelength windows, is suitable for applications in integrated and compact optical communications systems where multifunctional and short optical and photonic devices are required. © 2019 IEEE.

One of the stringent issues in modern electronic applications is related with the necessity of keeping the operating temperature of electronic components within safe levels. The use of passivation, board, and encapsulation materials with large thermal conductivity provides an efficient way of removing the excess heat without increasing the volume and weight of the electronic circuitry. Following this trend, diamond films deposited by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) offer a simple and efficient solution to maintain the operating temperature within safe limits. This paper discusses the use of CVD diamond films with HEMT devices, photonic integrated circuits and high power LEDs.

The Materials Genome Initiative (MGI) is a multi-agency partnership that seeks to accelerate the pace of materials development across the Materials Development Continuum. Through use of a computationally-led and data-driven approach, MGI promotes the rapid discovery and deployment of advanced materials that will ensure sustained American leadership in sectors including energy, electronics, and photonics. The goals of the MGI include 1) leading a culture shift in materials research through use of an iterative feedback-loop approach, 2) integrating experiment, computation, and theory throughout the materials research community, 3) making digital data accessible and useful to the larger community, and 4) creating a world-class materials science and engineering workforce. The Designing Materials to Revolutionize and Engineer our Future (DMREF) program at the National Science Foundation (NSF) partners with a number of other federal funding agencies to promote these objectives. DMREF includes participation from ten divisions in three directorates at the NSF to address fundamental materials discovery and development. This program currently funds about one hundred projects that cover the full spectrum of materials research. Among these are a number of projects that focus on electronic and photonic materials and devices in both the organic and inorganic realms. Graphene-based origami and kirigami metamaterials are among those being developed thought this methodology. The principles of the MGI are described and examples from specific DMREF projects are provided.

An optical coherent receiver for the down conversion of radio frequency (RF) signals from 10-18 GHz to 2 GHz is presented. Light from a distributed feedback semiconductor laser is split between two lithium niobate Mach-Zehnder modulators driven either by a tunable local oscillator (LO) tone or a RF signal coming, for example, from a receiving antenna. The modulated light signals are combined with an optical coupler and filtered by two fiber Bragg gratings (FBG) that select one optical sideband from each signal. Detection of the filtered light by a balanced photo-detector produces an electrical signal at an intermediate frequency equal to the beat difference between the RF and LO frequencies. Most current RF photonic systems are made from individually packaged devices that are interconnected with fiber-optic cables. In order to reduce size and weight and make the coherent receiver suitable for use in smaller airborne and mobile platforms, optical and opto-electronic components are packaged within a common enclosure where light routing is performed by micro-optics. A printed circuit board (PCB) is included within the module. It comprises a micro-processor to control and monitor the laser, the FBGs and thermo-electric coolers to ensure a robust operation over time and fluctuating environmental conditions. The module including the PCB, laser, modulators, optics, optical filters and balanced detector has a size of 89 x 64 x 32 mm(3).
