Despite the great potential of nanomaterials in electronic and photonic applications, their incorporation into functional devices will require the combination of top-down lithographic large-area patterning with the high resolution and chemical precision afforded by bottom-up self-assembly. Despite the wealth of existing lithography techniques, there remain significant hurdles to addressing below the 20nm regime. In light of these challenges, there have been significant efforts to use "bottom-up" or self-assembly approaches for patterning. One key, "manufacturable" approach has been to merge self-assembling systems with substrates patterned using conventional lithographic techniques. This paper will show our recent efforts in directing the placement of single stranded DNA and DNA templates on several different substrates that have been patterned by lithography. A variety of substrates have been generated by optical and e-beam lithography and these have been used to produce highly parallel arrays of mesoscale DNA scaffolds and DNA oligonucleotides in a single step. Furthermore, these DNA templates encode multiple nanometer recognition sites that can be further used to generate hierarchical assemblies of both organic and inorganic nanoscale materials. Because a significant challenge of future nanotechnology is the ability to address sub-20nm features, these self-assembled DNA arrays are being explored as potential templates for the assembly and wiring of nanoscale materials for both logic and memory.

A novel printed monopole antenna with dual wideband is presented for simultaneously satisfying wireless local area network (WLAN) and worldwide interoperability for microwave access (WiMAX) applications. The antenna structure consists of a rectangular monopole with a microstrip feed line for excitation and a trapezoid conductor-backed plane for band broadening. The measured 10 dB bandwidth for return loss is from 1.9 to 4.32 GHz and 5.1 to 7.18 GHz, covering all the 2.4/5.2/6.0 GHz WLAN bands and 2.5/4.0/6.2 GHz WiMAX bands.

The demand for high-speed photonic networks on civil and military aircraft has rapidly increased, with the use of optical components and fibres allowing significant achievements in helping to reduce weight, power consumption and cost. Commercial Off-The Shelf (COTS) components have become increasingly attractive to network designers. These offer a variety of transceivers, connectors and multiplexing devices that are inexpensive and easily sourced [1]. However, appropriate packaging will be required for the operating environment. The nonlinear optics of Si photonic wires is discussed. The distinctive features of these waveguides are that they have extremely large third-order susceptibility X(3) and dispersive properties. The strong dispersion and large third-order nonlinearity in Si photonic wires cause the linear and nonlinear optical physics in these guides to be intimately linked. By carefully choosing the waveguide dimensions, both linear and nonlinear optical properties of Si wires can be engineered. We review the fundamental optical physics and emerging applications for these Si wires. In many cases, the relatively low threshold powers for nonlinear optical effects in these wires make them potential candidates for functional on-chip nonlinear optical devices of just a few millimeters in length;conversely, the absence of nonlinear optical impairment is important for the use of Si wires in on-chip interconnects. In addition, the characteristic length scales of linear and nonlinear optical effects in Si wires are markedly different from those in commonly used optical guiding systems, such as optical fibers or photonic crystal fibers, and therefore guiding structures based on Si wires represent ideal optical media for investigating new and intriguing physical phenomena. © 2009 Optical Society of America.

Highly-efficient, low-voltage organic light emitting diodes (OLED) are well suitable for post-processing integration onto the top metal layer of CMOS devices. The use of OLED on CMOS substrates requires a top-emitting, low-voltage and highly efficient OLED structure. So far OLED-on-CMOS application has been limited to microdisplays only. By the use of integrated photodetectors, low-cost CMOS processes and simple packaging, new optoelectronic microsystems with combined sensors and actuating elements can be realized. They can be used for optical integrated circuits (OIC's), for fiber optics, to measure temperature, distance or fill level as well as to transfuse optical signals (optocoupler, optical data communication). Furthermore they can be used for applications which react to failures in optical paths (light barriers) or to capture physical properties of objects by reflection of light (colour-, flow-, contrastor luminescence sensors). We developed an optical microsystem with three different types of sensors: a color, flow and reflection sensor. A corresponding demonstrator shows the functionality of combined sensors and actuating elements based on OLED and CMOS integration. The silicon chip was manufactured in a commercial 1micrometer CMOS technology. The integration of the OLED's takes place in the production line of the IPMS.

We investigate, both theoretically and experimentally, how the use of an all-Optical Decision Element (ODE) in front of a conventional receiver improves, in Return-to-Zero (RZ) systems, the receiver performance when the signal bandwidth exceeds the bandwidth of the available opto-electronic components. A theoretical analysis of the ODE behavior shows the field of applicability of the investigated solution. The experimental evaluation of the performance improvement in an RZ system is realized using an ODE based on two cascaded Nonlinear Optical Loop Mirrors. Benefits in terms of Bit Error Rate for different signal bandwidths and for different received Optical Signal-to-Noise Ratio (OSNR) are presented. Substantial agreement of the experimental results with the theoretical analysis is obtained. The impact of the ODE in the presence of relevant thermal noise at the receiver is also considered. The ODE can extend the use of common band-limited receivers to wide-bandwidth signals, and can be an alternative solution to the development of wide-band receivers.

We present an overview of our work on the design and fabrication of micro/nano-scale photonic circuits and networks on what we call "optical printed circuit boards" (O-PCBs) and "VLSI photonic integrated circuit chips"(VLSI-PICs) of generic and application-specific nature. The O-PCBs and photonic chips consist of 2-dimensional planar arrays of optical wires, circuits, and networks of micro/nano-scale to perform the functions of sensing, storing, transporting, processing, switching, routing, and distributing optical signals on flat boards or chips. We describe and discuss scientific and technological issues concerning the miniaturization, interconnection and integration of micro/nano-scale photonic devices, circuits, and networks leading to small and very large scale integration in terms of photonic scaling rules and discuss their use for the design and fabrication of the photonic integrated circuits and networks. Design rules for the miniaturization and integration of the micro/nano-photonic systems are discussed in comparison with those of the micro/nano-electronic systems. Materials include polymer/organic materials and silicon materials. Structural bases include photonic crystals, ring resonators, and plasmonic structures. Compatibility issues between diverse materials and devices are discussed especially in regard to applications. Recent progresses and examples are presented.

Monitoring of personal wellbeing and optimizing human performance are areas where sensors have only begun to be used. One of the reasons for this is the specific demands that these application areas put on the underlying technology and system properties. In many cases these sensors will be integrated in clothing, be worn on the skin, or may even be placed inside the body. This implies that flexibility and wearability of the systems is essential for their success. devices based on polymer semiconductors allow for these demands since they can be fabricated with thin film technology. The use of thin film device technology allows for the fabrication of very thin sensors (e.g. integrated in food product packaging), flexible or bendable sensors in wearables, large area/distributed sensors, and intrinsically low-cost applications in disposable products. With thin film device technology a high level of integration can be achieved with parts that analyze signals, process and store data, and interact over a network. Integration of all these functions will inherently lead to better cost/performance ratios, especially if printing and other standard polymer technology such as high precision moulding is applied for the fabrication. In this paper we present an optical transmission sensor array based on polymer semiconductor devices made by thin film technology. The organic devices, light emitting diodes, photodiodes and selective medium chip, are integrated with classic electronic components. Together they form a versatile sensor platform that allows for the quantitative measurement of 100 channels and communicates wireless with a computer. The emphasis is given to the sensor principle, the design, fabrication technology and integration of the thin film devices.

Functionalization of semiconductors (SC) has been widely used for various electronic, photonic and biomedical applications. In this paper, we report on selective functionalization achieved by peptides that reveal specific recognition of the SC surfaces. A M13 bacteriophage library was used to screen 101() different 12-mer peptide on various SC substrates to successfully isolate after 3 cycles one specific peptide for the majority of semiconductors. Our results conclude that GaAs(100) and GaN(0001) retain the same sequence of 12-mer peptide, suggesting that the specificity does not depend on the crystallographic structure but it depends on the chemical composition and the electronegativity of the surface, thus on the orientation of the material. We also note the presence of at least one proline (Pro) amino acid in each peptide, and the presence of the histidine (His) in the specific peptides for the II-VI class SC. Pro imprints a constraint to the peptide to facilitate adhesion to the surface, whereas the basic side chain His is known for its affinity towards some of the elements of class II SC. Finally, fluorescence microscopy has been employed to demonstrate the preferential attachment of the peptide to their specific SC surface in close proximity to a surface of different chemical and structural composition. The use of selected peptides expressed by phage display can be extended to encompass a variety of nanostructured semiconductor based devices.
