The amount of information that can be handled by computers is increasing every year. In order to satisfy this growing demand, computers need to augment the number of components in a chip and, at the same time, operate at higher speeds. This is leading long electrical interconnects to reach their limits in terms of speed and power dissipation, motivating the search of new alternatives. One of the alternatives is to use optical interconnects, because they can operate at very high speeds, dissipate less power and are more immune to electrical interference. On the other hand, optical circuits in these optical interconnect systems cannot be much larger than their electronic counterparts, what opens an opportunity for photonic crystal circuits, due to their great potential to reduce dimensions in integrated optical circuits technology. In this presentation, we analyze a few photonic crystal devices which target optical interconnect applications. © 2006 IEEE.

We show that the use of tunable photonic structures opens up unprecedented possibilities in information processing. In particular, we introduce an all-optical adiabatic bandwidth compression and frequency conversion process that overcomes the classical bandwidth-delay constraint in optics. This process requires only very small index modulations (deltan/n<10(-4)) performed at moderate speeds, and yet can alter the spectrum of a photon almost at will. As examples of this process, we show how light pulses can be stopped and stored all-optically in multitude of systems without using any resonant or coherent electronic interactions. We also show how light pulses can be time-reversed using only linear optical elements and modulators. Such systems open up new opportunities in both fundamental sciences and technological applications.

In a point-to-point optical link the basic way to modulate the optical signal with information is IM - Intensity Modulation - and the way to demodulate is the DD - Direct Detection. The typical optical sources employed are semiconductor devices, and the method to detect optical signals is also semiconductor devices. In both cases, the optoelectronic devices have a linear relation between the optical power and the electrical signal. For a student usually more accustomed to the electronic field, the relation between the power and electric current is a quadratic relation. Moreover, the decibel, or "dB", unit employed to describe SNP., channel losses, and so on, it is a power relation. The way to measure the power it is the same in both electric and optical fields. In both cases it is necessary to measure the current thought a resistor, but the relation between current and power is different in each case. In this paper we present a way to show to the student the linear relation between optical power and electric current in optical sources and detectors. We will use the mathematical relation P=P (I) to represent, by software, the characteristic function of the optical source. By applying an analogical or a digital function to the current we will describe how is made the IM. Only an additional parameter will be studied: the dependence of the characteristic with temperature. In a first exercise the student will analyzed briefly how is detected light on a photodiode, studying the linearity of the generated current I=I(P) with respect to the optical power. No reference to optical wavelength or noise will be made.

Powerful refrigeration methods are being deployed to cool electronic devices in test and in end-use application. Cooling capacity control is required to prevent over- or under-cooling. Various levels of control precision are also required. Test applications demand precise temperature control while many end-use applications will accommodate a less sophisticated approach. Important determinants of the method employed to control refrigeration capacity include target operating temperature, absolute and dynamic power dissipation of the device being cooled, control precision required, refrigeration system design and construction, as well as application-related details of the electronics assembly. A variety of capacity control methods are needed to cover the breadth of electronics cooling applications. Control free, or open loop systems meet the needs of some applications. Other systems employ thermal expansion (TX) and hot-gas by-pass valves to provide controlled cooling of very high power electronics cooling vapor compression systems. Modulation of condenser efficiency by varying fan speed provides a very simple but limited range of temperature control. A broad range of precise temperature control requires a combination of approaches to precisely meter refrigerant flow to the cold plate and, if needed, to apply parasitic heat. This paper overviews various vapor compression refrigeration control architectures as they apply to electronics cooling. Comparative cost and performance data are presented.

The uses of all classes of space systems both military and commercial are rapidly increasing. In turn the surveillance of these systems and their activities are becoming of increasing importance to the uses of these systems. Unfortunately, the present surveillance infrastructure is not keeping pace with the demand for information and new infrastructure and capabilities are needed. As a result new technologies are being developed to support the need. These technologies can be used by both the military and commercial use and thus "dual-use technologies" have come into reality. The background conditions, current research directions, and their dual use applications are briefly examined.

The influence of alloy composition on the noise behavior of heterostructure semiconductor devices is investigated by using a rigorous two-dimensional physical simulator. The model takes into account non-stationary transport properties and quantization effects to allow a better understanding of the carrier transport properties inside the heterostructure devices and consequently to explain the noise performance of these devices by making use of the microscopic nature of the model. As an example, the model is applied to study the effects of alloy composition and the resulting band discontinuity on the 2DEG properties and on the noise performance of Hetero-FETs at millimeter-wave frequencies, and to extract the optimum alloy composition which leads to the minimum noise figure in different frequency ranges.
