The mobile devices are assumed to have an "asymmetric" interface structure: a satellite interface and a terrestrial interface for wireless multimedianetworking. The terrestrial interface utilizes multi-hop transmission with opportunistic access schemes while the satellite interface provides a lower bitrate but simpler and less power-hungry transmission.

multimedia Broadcast Multicast Service (MBMS)(1) is an efficiency cellular strategy for shared content delivery, widely popular in Long Term Evolution (LTE) networks. Typical multimedia IP packets possess redundantly large headers, relying on Robust Header Compression (ROHC) for efficiency boost. This work investigates the adaptation of ROHC schemes for MBMS. We formulate and solve the optimization problem of transmission efficiency maximization in point-to-multipoint (P-t-M) transmission mode. Based on this solution, we propose a new MBMS scheme, namely point-to-multigroup (P-t-MG) transmission in which MBMS aim user groups. We provide a grouping and parameter optimization algorithm for P-t-MG to achieve high efficiency under total radio resource constraints. Numerical results demonstrate the advantage of the optimized P-t-M and the P-t-MG schemes over conventional MBMS.

During the life cycle of service and job, states are monitored and contexts are saved. When service failure occurs, the framework takes advantage of the persistent contexts to realize rapid recovery of service and job. The experiments show that J-FRF has a high recovery success rate and lower recovery time, and can be able to better handle the failure of job management services.

The IEEE 802.15.4/ZigBee technology is emerging as an important wireless sensor networking solution for short and medium range communication due to its numerous advantages. On the other hand, multimedia applications have gained increasing popularity that gives us the opportunity to improve this technology to support video transmission. In limited bandwidth ZigBee networks (250 kbps at 2.4 GHz), how to increase the throughput in constrained environments has become the main challenge. Multi-path becomes a crucial feature in supporting video transmission. Using simultaneous multiple paths provides the bandwidth requirements of multimedia applications. Unfortunately, concurrent transmission creates the problem of inter-path interference mainly due to the broadcast nature of the underlying medium. In this paper, we propose an interference-minimized multipath routing to facilitate MPEG-4 video transmission over ZigBee-based WSNs. This latter is evaluated using comparison with an interfering multipath routing version and the single path routing under different video frame rates. Results show that the proposed interference-aware multipath routing for Zig Bee-based WSNs can dramatically reduce the level of interference and thus maximize the overall throughput and improve the received video quality.

Devising a uniform paradigm for the representation of multimedia data contents in distributed systems in the presence of heterogeneity, distribution, and semantic gap is a difficult task. When adding technological limitations to this mix, the problem becomes more complex. In this paper, we present a logic-based model for representing the semantics of complex multimedia data objects. The model employs first-order logic to describe the semantic contents of multimedia data, such as visual objects and color/texture features. The aim of this model is to provide general multimedia content representation that can be used in object-oriented information systems. The novelty of this framework comes from (1) its mathematical capability to represent semantic contents, (2) the hierarchical organization and classification of multimedia data objects according to their semantic contents, and (3) the ease of nearest-neighbor searching through synonym links. Finally, the simulation results are presented and analyzed based on various performance metrics.

The paper deals with software productivity improvement for consumer multimedia devices by means of PC and component technology and shows how this is done for complex real-time content analysis applications used in advanced new storage products of the future. Content analysis is a relatively new and immature technology. It is used for browsing and searching particular content items among thousands of others on "big" embedded storage devices like hard disks. As the storage capacity of hard disk and flash continues to grow rapidly, content analysis is bound to become a key enabling technology in future storage products. A major problem with content analysis features (and many other features as well) is that underlying algorithms are unstable, sometimes unavailable, or at least, very much in their infancy, and as such, subject to frequent changes. The paper describes an approach to facilitate early evaluation and integration of such immature features. This is done by packing each feature, as-is, into components and by providing PC network technology to interconnect them. In our prototyping framework, each component is an independent executable program that runs on some PC in the network, streaming AV data via TCP/IP and being controlled through UPnP networking. Experiences with large-scale prototyping activities we have carried out for the assessment of future content analysis systems, show that a PC based prototyping approach enables the integration of many different media processing features in a short time and that it allows for accurate analysis of the resource (CPU/memory) requirements of such components.

Broadly used Database Management Systems (DBMS) are not able to tackle the requirements of multimedia in querying, indexing and content modeling. Therefore, extenders for multimedia data types have been proposed. These extensions, however, offer only limited semantic modeling and rely on basic index structures which do not meet the whole nature of multimedia, for instance for a Nearest-Neighbor Search. In this context, the paper presents a methodology,for enhancing extensible ORDBMS for multimedia data. In particular, we introduce an MPEG-7 multimedia Data Cartridge which includes a semantically rich metadata model for multimedia content relying on the MPEG-7 standard. Furthermore, to fulfill the needs for efficient multimedia query processing, we created in this Cartridge a new indexing and query framework for various types of retrieval operations.

The processes are exchanging kinds of multimedia objects in addition to traditional test data. The multimedia objects are longer than traditional messages and are structured. In this paper, we discuss new types of causally precedent relations among multimedia objects transmitted in the network. We discuss a protocol to causally deliver multimedia objects in a group of processes. We also show the evaluation of the protocol.

Visions and expected predictions of future networking paradigms often include heterogeneous networks build upon an IP-based core. Future services form a key component within these networks and are expected to include support for nomadic and ubiquitous usage. This paper comprises a discussion of nomadic usage scenarios within service centered networks. Thereafter secure service discovery under nomadic conditions is explained by means of a model introduced in this contribution. This model embraces the nature of nomadic computing as macro-nomadic vs. micro-nomadic depending on the use case. As a conclusion unresolved problems concerning service security within the given boundaries will be presented.
