Numerous geosciences applications need denser and more accurate Digital Elevation Model data. Photogrammetry, as the main method of producing DEM, sometimes loses its feasibility in the textureless area or in the case where no aerial photography with highly spatial resolution is available. Under this circumstance, interpolation methods are often utilized to generate denser DEM map. However, these methods are mathematical processes which only consider known points and neglect the ground truth of unknown surface. To correctly reconstruct the surface of terrain from sparse ground control points, this paper presents a new DEM densification algorithm, combining perspective non-Lambertian SFS based on spectral information from single satellite image with DEM interpolation. Single multi-spectral image was used to correctly estimate surface reflection properties at first, and surface relative shape was reconstructed based on Oren-Nayar reflection model. Finally the shape from gradient interpolation method was applied to generate a higher-resolution DEM grid. Experiments demonstrate the ability of the proposed algorithm for the enhanced resolution DEM map from the sparse DEM grid and multi-spectral image.

In order to provide the end-to-end service with QoS support, a novel objective quality assessment adopting the cross-layer optimized mapping from the key components' value of application layer to the subjective score of user-layer is presented in this paper. In this framework, the maximum likelihood estimation to the subjective score in subjective quality assessment with lower complexity is presented at first to avoid the complexity of the least-squares estimation. Then the optimal selection of the key component based on the highest loading is obtained, which take out the correlation among the application-layer parameters and simple the mapping form the key component to the application-layer equipment. At last, an optimal multiple regression line mapping based on the maximum likelihood decision is presented, which utilize the statistical quantifying outcomes of the subject score and adjust the coefficient of the mapping according to the fluctuation of those outcomes. This optimal mapping avoid the un-accuracy resulted from the ignorance of the statistics of the subjective score in the liner dynamic curve fitting. The objective quality assessment in this paper is facile to online monitor by the subject score or quality assess based on network scene. The computation and the simulation show that our suggestion outperforms the old one.

An energy conservation strategy must address two issues placement of virtual machine images and workload characteristics of virtual machines. For performance reason most cloud systems copy a prototype image into the local disk of a physical machine before starting a virtual machine. If the physical machine that stores the image of a virtual machine is off-line, then we cannot run this virtual machine. The workload characteristics of virtual machines determine whether it is data-intensive or CPU-intensive. We assume that the system has a distributed file system therefore a physical machine can run any virtual machine even lilt does not have the image. However, we observe that the performance of a data-intensive virtual machine running on a physical machine without its image could result in 60% performance loss compared with running the same virtual machine on a physical machine that has the virtual machine image. On the other hand, the performance of a CPU-intensive virtual machine is almost independent of whether the physical machine has the image or not. As a result, an energy conservation algorithm must consider the workload characteristic of a virtual machine when finding a physical machine to run it, especially for data-intensive virtual machines. This paper proposes a workload characteristics-aware virtual machine consolidation algorithms. We propose an approximation algorithm and two dynamic programmings to consolidate virtual machines and reduce the number of physical machines. We conduct experiments and compare the numbers of physical machines used by our approximation algorithm with the optimal number of physical machines found by our dynamic programming. The experiment results indicate that our approximation algorithm finds good solutions much faster than the dynamic programming.

Over the past few years, fuzzy time series model has been widely researched. However, previous studies have a problem that determines subjectively the length of intervals. Furthermore, the consideration of a forecasting stage only discusses the relations for previous period and next period. This paper propose a promising hybrid model to get more efficient forecasting. Hence, this study proposes a fusion model, which incorporates a granular spread partition method and the adaptive expectation method to enhance the forecasting results. To verify the proposed model, a ten-year period of the TAIEX (Taiwan Stock Exchange Capitalization Weighted Stock Index) are employed as experimental datasets. From the experiment results, the performances of proposed integrated model surpass the listing models.

Fragment shaders in a graphics pipeline are used to compute the color for each pixel, where lighting, texture loading, and other calculations are involved. The required computing power is proportional to the number of input fragments. In order to improve the power efficiency of mobile GPUs, a content adaptive sampling scheme is proposed to reduce the fragments. The proposed scheme is based on tile-based traversal. For each 4x4 tile, only parts of the fragments are sampled and rendered with the original shader program, and the values of other fragments are interpolated from these rendered fragments if the content checking condition can be passed. With this approach, the sampling patterns are decided adaptively, where more samples are employed for complex regions to avoid quality degradation. Experimental results show that about 30% - 50% fragments can be reduced where high image quality can be still maintained. The proposed scheme can be employed to reduce the power consumption and increase the frame rate for mobile GPUs.
