Among different emerging disruptive technologies, P2P computing has shown its usefulness in designing decentralized and scalable online learning systems. One important feature of P2P systems explored in this context is that of direct peer-to-peer communication. It has been shown in several recent research works that the direct communication between peers increases the interaction among peers and eventually the social and emotive support through peer-to-peer learning. Thus, P2P infrastructure helps creating a small social networking in online groups, in which end users (peers at the edges of the Internet) can benefit from using a P2P infrastructure and thus overcome the limitations of reduced social interaction in web-based e-Learning systems. However, due to the dynamics of peers joining and leaving the system in an unexpected manner, such systems strive to provide availability of information. In this work we propose a replication-aware approach to increase availability of information in P2P super-peer systems. Our context is that of project-based learning in which members of a peer group work together online to accomplish a common project although our replication scheme can be used also for multimedia content distribution of learning objects. © 2012 Crown Copyright.

With the exponential growth of multimedia in todays Internet, Content Delivery Networks are seen to play a key role in the dissemination of multimedia content to the plethora of Internet enabled devices. It has been recognised that delivery networks are provisioned for peak demand, leading to prolonged periods of poor resource utilisation. The recent emergence of the cloud-computing paradigm as a commercial reality has created a proposition whereby content providers can outsource their distribution requirements to third party cloud providers when the need arises, ensuring high quality of service, while minimising costs. In previous work we proposed an Elastic Video Endpoint, a virtualised multimedia distribution point, which can utilise cloud resources to dynamically provision extra bandwidth in real time. Current cloud delivery systems commonly have pre-allocated storage that in many cases is over provisioned, in this work we present experimental results to demonstrate the ability of the proposed system to dynamically provision storage in real time to facilitate the efficient dissemination of multimedia content.

The heterogeneity of client devices is increasing leading to different resolutions, qualities and form factors. Due to the amount of multimedia to be processed, transcoding and protection can be no longer performed linearly. For that reason, this article describes a solution to distribute and parallelize the transcoding process as well as the content encryption relying on cloud computing. Moreover, this article shows the benefits of this approach showing several experimental results.

Our modern densely populated cities have created an Achilles heel for public safety services where natural or man-made disasters often result in high casualties. The 2005 London bombings have exposed the inadequacy of current First Responder (FR) communication systems for modern response operations. Additionally, FR organisations presently pay a tariff each time Public Protection and Disaster Relief (PPDR) communication technologies are used, rendering current PPDR communication expensive as compared to emerging license-exempt IP-based technologies. Decentralised ubiquitous networking proposes an alternative way of providing innovative secure wireless systems for IP-based, infrastructure independent PPDR communications. The ad-hoc setup capabilities of ubiquitous systems will reduce the cost for emergency response whilst allowing more flexible ways of communicating. Key characteristics of such systems are their ease of deployment and the interoperability across FR teams for national as well as cross border operations. In this paper we discuss how decentralised ubiquitous networking can assist emergency communications.

Online social network has reshaped the way how video contents are generated, distributed and consumed on today's Internet. Given the massive number of videos generated and shared in online social networks, it has been popular for users to directly access video contents in their preferred social network services. It is intriguing to study the service provision of social video contents for global users with satisfactory quality-of-experience. In this paper, we conduct large-scale measurement of a real-world online social network system to study the propagation of the social video contents. We have summarized important characteristics from the video propagation patterns, including social locality, geographical locality and temporal locality. Motivated by the measurement insights, we propose a propagation-based social-aware replication framework using a hybrid edge-cloud and peer-assisted architecture, namely PSAR, to serve the social video contents. Our replication strategies in PSAR are based on the design of three propagation-based replication indices, including a geographic influence index and a content propagation index to guide how the edge-cloud servers backup the videos, and a social influence index to guide how peers cache the videos for their friends. By incorporating these replication indices into our system design, PSAR has significantly improved the replication performance and the video service quality. Our trace-driven experiments further demonstrate the effectiveness and superiority of PSAR, which improves the local download ratio in the edge-cloud replication by 30%, and the local cache hit ratio in the peer-assisted replication by 40%, against traditional approaches. © 2012 ACM.

The use of multimedia applications is increasing every year. These trends include the deployment using wireless local area network (WLAN) that allows users to access various services. The most significant thing in the use of wireless networks is the delay, collusion, attenuation and interference. In addition, it is difficult to provide quality of service (QoS) in WLAN as the network capacity also varies with the offered load [1]. There are several problems in QoS support for multimedia applications. For real-time multimedia applications, packet loss and packet drop due to excessive time delay is a major factor affecting the quality perceived by the user. For video streams, delay is a very important factor to consider when transmitting the entire video frame from the sender to the client. Level of losses incurred due to packet delay depends on the delay data transmitted in the form of a video stream. Video streaming applications usually impose an upper limit (threshold) packet loss. In particular, packet loss ratio required to be kept below the threshold for achieving an acceptable visual quality. Packet loss ratio is high due to network congestion or network traffic is very high (overload) that cause degradation of the quality of multimedia, especially in wireless networks with limited bandwidth. To reduce the rate of degradation is the necessary framework of adaptive mechanisms in the wireless network so that video streaming applications such as teleconferencing can work well.

Data-centric network plays an important part in the next generation network architecture. And name system is one of basic elements in data-centric network. This paper describes an approach which achieves the name system design criterion. In naming, a combination of three entities is used to achieve security, scalability, and flexibility. In name resolution, a three-layer structure is proposed to achieve precise and semantic resolutions.

There will be a great of Heterogeneous networks in Next Generation Network. Mobile Satellite system (MSS), great supplement of terrestrial network, provide large scale network coverage and is able to support IP multimedia services. We propose a SIP-based soft handoff scheme for integrated architecture of MSS and UMTS, as well as add satellite access gateway (SAG) in satellite station and terrestrial access gateway (TAG) in GPRS network as SIP proxy of Mobile Host (MH) to realize SIP soft handoff. This scheme could reduce the delay obviously and make the packet loss rate to zero.

Information heterogeneity of ITS Indonesia becomes an obstacle to provide interoperability. The transportation information resource sharing is affected by this condition. ITS generally comprise a distinguished form of large-scale, distributed information system deployed in some form of tangible or virtual network. Cloud computing could benefits ITS for it's essential characteristics, which are on-demand self-service, broad network access, resource pooling, rapid elasticity, and measured service. By establishing Cloud ITS based on cloud computing, it is feasible to accommodate transportation information sharing platform.

Traditional transport layer protocols have been designed to perform end-to-end error control transparently to the intermediate nodes (e.g., TCP). However, the resource constraints featured by Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) require a different paradigm where intermediate nodes are able to cache packets and if possible retransmit them on-demand to avoid incurring costly end-to-end retransmissions. Lately, wireless multimedia sensor network (WMSN) is being considered as a new research area whereby WSNs are targeted for the delivery of multimedia traffic. In this paper, we propose a NACK-based repair mechanism coupled with an adaptive MAC layer retransmission scheme in order to improve the performance of the transport protocols. Specifically, our goal is to be able to reduce real-time end-to-end delay while maintaining reliability and energy efficiency in the presence of high channel error rates. Our simulation results show that the ensemble of both mechanisms provides better good-put performance while simultaneously improving energy efficiency. Furthermore, the improved protocol also achieves lower deadline miss ratios which makes it suitable for multimedia transport. While we demonstrate the effectiveness of the mechanisms by incorporating them into the basic Distributed Transport for Sensor Networks (DTSN) protocol, they are generic enough to be applicable to other WSN transport protocols.
