The social network is a powerful data structure allowing the depiction of relationship information between entities. Recent researchers have proposed many successful methods on analyzing homogeneous social networks assuming only a single type of node and relation. Nevertheless, real-world complex networks are usually heterogeneous, which presumes a network can be composed of different types of nodes and relations. In this paper, we propose an unsupervised tensor-based mechanism considering higher-order relational information to model the complex semantics of a heterogeneous social network. Based on the model we present solutions to three critical issues in heterogeneous networks. The first concerns identifying central nodes in the heterogeneous network. Second, we propose a role-based clustering method to identify nodes which play similar roles in the network. Finally, we propose an egocentric abstraction mechanism to facilitate further explorations in a complex social network. The evaluations are conducted on a real-world movie dataset and an artificial crime dataset with promising results.

During recent years cloud service providers have successfully provided reliable and flexible resources to cloud users. For example Amazon Elastic Block Store (Amazon EBS) and Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3) provides users storage in the cloud. Despite the tremendous efforts cloud service providers have devoted to the availability of their services, the interruption is still inevitable. Therefore just as an Internet service provider will not count on a single network provider, a cloud user should not depend on a single cloud service provider either. However, cloud service providers provide different levels of services. A more costly service is usually more reliable. As a result it is an important and challenging problem to choose among a set of service providers to fit one's need, which could be budget, failure probability, or the amount of data that can survive failure. The goal of this paper is to select cloud service providers in order to maximize the benefits with a given budget. The contributions of this paper include a mathematical formulation of the cloud service provider selection problem in which both the object functions and cost measurements are clearly defined, algorithms that selects among cloud storage providers to maximize the data survival probability or the amount of surviving data, subject to a fixed budget, and a series of experiments that demonstrate that the proposed algorithms are efficient enough to find optimal solutions in reasonable amount of time, using price and fail probability taken from real cloud providers. © 2012 IEEE.

Due to the growing popularity of smart phones, video streaming on wireless network has increasingly become a pivotal application for customers. Comparing with wired network, packet loss and transmission delay are two of the major hurdles to achieve a friendly user experience. In this paper, we propose an adaptive re-transmission scheme in the radio layer based on the priority of each frame, which gives a good balance between video quality and delay without overhead of involvement from upper layers (application layer / tcp layer). Testing shows a good overall user experience is achieved in terms of video quality and delay.

With the rapid increase in multimedia content and various screen devices, mobile users want to watch content regardless of device type anytime and anywhere, which is called multi-screen service (MSS), performed by service mobility technology. Although existing research studies support service mobility and MSS, they do not take into account inter-domain scenarios and live streaming services. In this paper, we propose mobile device-controlled service transfer (MDST) mechanism, which mobile device is allowed to transfer this service to target device first-hand. To support our mechanism, we extend the service discovery protocol in DLNA and present service flow-based mobility at the mobile device. In addition, we analyze the performance of the proposed mechanisms and confirm that MDST is superior in terms of signaling cost, packet delivery cost, and service disruption delay cost.

A content-centric network is one which supports host-to-content routing, rather than the host-to-host routing of the existing Internet. This paper investigates the potential of caching data at the router-level in content-centric networks. To achieve this, two measurement sets are combined to gain an understanding of the potential caching benefits of deploying content-centric protocols over the current Internet topology. The first set of measurements is a study of the BitTorrent network, which provides detailed traces of content request patterns. This is then combined with CAIDA's ITDK Internet traces to replay the content requests over a real-world topology. Using this data, simulations are performed to measure how effective content-centric networking would have been if it were available to these consumers/providers. We find that larger cache sizes (10,000 packets) can create significant reductions in packet path lengths. On average, 2.02 hops are saved through caching (a 20% reduction), whilst also allowing 11% of data requests to be maintained within the requester's AS. Importantly, we also show that these benefits extend significantly beyond that of edge caching by allowing transit ASes to also reduce traffic.

Throughput maximization is one of the main challenges in cognitive radio ad hoc networks, where the availability of local spectrum resources may change from time to time and hop by hop. Technologies based on 802.16e which called Mobile WiMAX (Worldwide Interoperability Microwave Access) promises to deliver high data rates over large distances and deliver multimedia services and are expected to play a major role in high speed broadband delivery. The maximum allowed number of hops must be carefully considered because higher number of hops will increase the transmission time and degrades the throughput and end to end delay. Multi-hop based network may also improve the system performance by using cooperative relay technique. There are various challenges for the routing in WiMAX mesh such as delay, long transmission scheduling, and increasingly stringent Quality of Service (QoS) support and load balance and fairness limitations. In this paper we use cognitive radio network composed of wireless devices able to opportunistically access the shred radio resource. The core of such networking paradigm is the capability of cognitive radio to monitor spectrum occupation to exploit spectrums holes for transition. Extensive simulations are conducted under MATLAB and compare the performance of our routing protocol with AODV for Mobile WiMAX environment. The propose algorithm shows high throughput, reduce end to end delay, and increase packet delivery ratio.

2D laser scanners are now widely used to accomplish robot perception tasks such as SLAM and multi-target tracking (MTT). While a number of SLAM benchmarking datasets are available, only a few works have discussed the issues of collecting multi-target tracking benchmarking datasets. In this work, a segmentation and data association annotation system is proposed for evaluating multi-target tracking using 2D laser scanners. The proposed annotation system uses the existing MTT algorithm to generate initial annotation results and uses camera images as the strong hints to assist annotators to recognize moving objects in laser scans. The annotators can draw the object's shape and future trajectory to automate segmentation and data association and reduce the annotation task loading. The user study results show that the performance of the proposed annotation system is superior in the V-measure vs. annotation speed tests and the false positive and false negative rates.

This paper researches on IMS multimedia sharing service modes. multimedia sharing service allows service users to share multimedia in a variety of multimedia sharing modes with one or more IMS multimedia sharing service users through IMS multimedia service system (but not limited to) using an IMS multimedia sharing client. This paper concretely studies and designs the functions and service flows for each IMS multimedia sharing service mode, and gives the signaling flows. Then, the paper develops IMS multimedia sharing service client software. Finally, it builds IMS multimedia sharing service system to demonstrate and test what is researched and designed for IMS multimedia sharing service before, verifying its feasibility.

IEEE 802.11s is an emerging standard for wireless mesh networks. Networks based on IEEE 802.11s directly benefit from existing security mechanisms in IEEE 802.11. This limits the attack surface of IEEE 802.11s significantly for adversaries that cannot authenticate with the network. Mesh networks are, however, often conceived for community network scenarios, which are inherently more open than managed infrastructure networks. This openness entails an increased risk of insider attacks, i.e., attacks by compromised stations that can authenticate with the network. Currently, IEEE 802.11s is lacking adequate protection against such insider attacks. In this paper, we hence derive an attack model for insider attacks and present two insider attack strategies to which IEEE 802.11s networks are prone, namely impairing the network performance and preventing communication between a pair of nodes. We design countermeasures that allow to defend the wireless network against both types of attacks. Our implementations only incur marginal computational and memory overheads, while the network security is measurably strengthened.

Using insights from biological processes could help to design new optimization techniques for long-standing computational problems. This paper exploits a cellular computing model in the slime mold physarum polycephalum to solve the minimal exposure path problem which is a fundamental problem corresponding to the worst-case coverage in wireless sensor networks. We first formulate the minimal exposure path problem, and then convert it into the shortest path problem by discretizing the monitoring field to a large-scale weighted grid. Inspired by the path-finding capability of physarum, we develop a new optimization algorithm, named as the physarum optimization, for solving the shortest path problem. Our proposed algorithm is with low-complexity and high-parallelism. Moreover, the core mechanism of our physarum optimization is also helpful for designing new graph algorithms and improving routing protocols and topology control in self-organized networks.
