Digital convergence is becoming increasingly important to both network operators and end users. Network operators look to Next Generation Network (NGN) solutions to meet the ever growing user demand and to the IP multimedia Subsystem (IMS) as a catalyzer for attractive and innovative services which aim at improving user Quality of Experience (QoE). IMS, presented as the first working implementation of a Service Delivery Platform (SDP), takes great strides to ease migration to NGN as well as help the network become transparent to the end user. Location Based Services (LBS) also play an important role in QoE by supplying relevant information on the user's whereabouts directly enhancing their day-to-day activities. The combination of LBS within IMS holds great promise for future services where service delivery mimics a network responding directly to user activities. This helps dissolve the difference between the network and the User Equipment (UE), thus increasing user adoption through a transparent network and service delivery. This paper presents two personalized LBS implemented within an IMS test bed acting as a proof of concept for providing improved QoE on an IMS infrastructure as well as demonstrating that service creation is relatively easy to achieve in IMS.

Summary form only given. The traditional approach to routing in ad hoc networks consists of maintaining routing tables listing entries for all or selected network destinations. Unfortunately, because the identifiers assigned to nodes (e.g., IP addresses or MAC addresses) in a network with mobile nodes have nothing to do with the topology of the network, network-wide dissemination of updates or queries must be used to maintain such tables, which renders the signaling of the routing protocols unscalable. This talk describes a new approach for scale-free routing that is called SURF (Scale-free Untethered Routing Framework). With SURF, the network itself assigns identifiers to nodes and updates these identifiers as the nodes move. The identifiers define a total ordering in the network with respect to one or multiple root nodes, which means that one or multiple routes from any source to any destination are defined automatically by the identifiers of the two nodes. To allow the sources to learn the identifiers of the destinations, a publish-subscribe distributed directory service is provided, such that a destination publishes its existence at an anchor node and a destination subscribes to destinations by contacting the proper anchors. The talk will show how SURF can be applied to different types of specialized networks, including those in which relay nodes have severe constraints (size, processing power, energy consumption).

Streaming service is becoming more popular for many users to access multimedia content. With different demand of clients and different service charge given, streaming servers must provide different levels of quality of service (QoS) and apply more effective resource management scheme. This paper proposes an enhanced model of harmonic proportional bandwidth allocation scheme to re-utilize the released bandwidth. Our proposed strategy uses one part (defined as β) of the released bandwidth to raise service quality of clients and increase total bandwidth utilization. The rest part (i.e., 1-β) of the released bandwidth reduces the delay time of clients by serving more clients who are not allowed to be served originally, where β is between 0 and 1. In the simulation, we discuss what the value of β is better when simultaneously considering the two factors including the total bandwidth utilization and the delay time of users, respectively. Furthermore, our proposed strategy is validated through the simulation that the high utilization and lower delay time properties for streaming servers can be obtained no matter whether the probability of clients that leave services is high or low even in different request scheduling policies.

The recent emergence of Cloud computing in the IT world has opened doors for new revenue streams and business models. The movement towards a service-oriented architecture and an all-IP based communication system has led to the IP multimedia Subsystem (IMS) being accepted as the Next Generation Networks (NGN) service control-provisioning platform. The Telco 2.0 domain can benefit from service enhancement and Web 2.0 technologies such as Cloud computing. This can be achieved by opening gateways and APIs guarding rich underlying network resources (e.g. location) to 3 rd Party ASPs, thus adopting the delivery of Network as a Service (NaaS). Telco services are faced with opportunities to make use of powerful computational power and storage services offered by cloud environments to accelerate business-processing speeds.

Summary form only given. In this paper, Wyner-Ziv (WZ) video coding is a particular case of distributed video coding (DVC). Although some works, with improved performance, have been made in recent years, the coding efficiency of state-of-the-art WZ codec is still far from that of the state-of-the-art prediction-based codec, especially for high and complex motion contents. Moreover, most reported WZ codecs have a high time delay in decoder, which hinders its practical application in real-time systems. The performance of the SI creation process based on adjacent previously decoded frames is limited by the quality of the past and the future reference frames as well as the distance and motion behavior between them. In this work, by combining coding tools developed in recent literatures on transform domain WZ coding with some newly developed modules on both encoding and decoding sides, an efficient and practical WZ video coding architecture, dubbed as Distributed video coding with PArallelized design for Concurrent computing (DISPAC), is proposed to better the rate-distortion (RD) performance. Another unique feature of DISPAC, lies in the parallelizability of the modules used by its WZ decoder which increased the decoding speed largely. Experimental results conducted on a concurrent computing environment (consisting of multi-core CPU and GPU processors) reveal that DISPAC codec can gain up to 2.8 dB in the RD measures and 14.35 times faster in the decoding speed as compared with the-state-of-art WZ video codec, respectively. By shifting the computational complexity from the encoder to the decoder and integrating with appropriate trascoding techniques, DVC has been expected to provide a video codec solution for Cloud computing mobile devices (such as mobile phones).

Resource Scheduling is a centerpiece of data centers. However, most previous works concentrate only on one-dimensional model, which ignoring the fact that multiple resources such as CPU, memory and network bandwidth are consumed simultaneously. As cloud computing allows uncoordinated and heterogeneous users to share a data center, competition for multiple resources has become increasingly severe. Motivated by the differences on integrated utilization obtained from different packing schemes, in this paper we model this scheduling problem as a multi-dimensional combinatorial optimization problem with constraint satisfaction. Due to the NP hardness, a novel heuristic algorithm called Multi-Attribute Decision based Integrated Resource Scheduling (MADIRS) is presented to obtain the approximate optimal solution. The simulation results show that our algorithm significantly outperforms the existing approaches in terms of efficiency and performance for a diverse set of workloads.

The influence maximization problem is to find a set of seed nodes which maximize the spread of influence in a social network. The seed nodes are used for the viral marketing to gain the maximum profits through the effective word-of-mouth. However, in more real-world cases, marketers usually target certain products at particular groups of customers. While original influence maximization problem considers no product information and target customers, in this paper, we focus on the target marketing. We propose the labeled influence maximization problem, which aims to find a set of seed nodes which can trigger the maximum spread of influence on the target customers in a labeled social network. We propose three algorithms to solve such labeled influence maximization problem. We first develop the algorithms based on the greedy methods of original influence maximization by considering the target customers. Moreover, we develop a novel algorithm, Maximum Coverage, whose central idea is to offline compute the pair wise proximities of nodes in the labeled social network and online find the set of seed nodes. This allows the marketers to plan and evaluate strategies online for advertised products. The experimental results on IMDb labeled social network show our methods can achieve promising performances on both effectiveness and efficiency.

Services such as multimedia, VoIP, video-conferencing, social networking and others impose new requirements on providers and constraints on network designers. Fair Queueing algorithms like CSFQ or Stochastic Fair BLUE have been used to improve the quality of the packet transmission. Such mechanisms usually supervise the bandwidth consumption per-flow and become helpless in the presence of P2P traffic. In quest for high quality transmission, multimedia applications are designed to use more and more P2P paradigms. As P2P traffic is also exposed to congestion, few works address congestion control in mixed traditional IP (for short called IP traffic) and P2P traffic. In this paper, we propose a model flow for the mixture of the two and present a principle and a method based on per-subscriber flow control, for congestion control. An architecture based on the Token-Based Traffic Control for P2P applications is introduced. The token resource consumed by each subscriber is counted and controls for both core and edge routers are generated in the case of IP and P2P traffic. The traffic is measured at core routers and the measurement data is conveyed to edge routers. They label the Token-Level on incoming packets according to the congestion index, and police the total input token of each P2P subscriber. Simulations results and the analysis of the impact on the performance of this approach on some P2P experiments are given.

As the size of data set in cloud increases rapidly, how to process large amount of data efficiently has become a critical issue. MapReduce provides a framework for large data processing and is shown to be scalable and fault-tolerant on commondity machines. However, it has higher learning curve than SQL-like language and the codes are hard to maintain and reuse. On the other hand, traditional SQL-based data processing is familiar to user but is limited in scalability. In this paper, we propose a hybrid approach to fill the gap between SQL-based and MapReduce data processing. We develop a data management system for cloud, named SQLMR. SQLMR complies SQL-like queries to a sequence of MapReduce jobs. Existing SQL-based applications are compatible seamlessly with SQLMR and users can manage Tera to PataByte scale of data with SQL-like queries instead of writing MapReduce codes. We also devise a number of optimization techniques to improve the performance of SQLMR. The experiment results demonstrate both performance and scalability advantage of SQLMR compared to MySQL and two NoSQL data processing systems, Hive and HadoopDB.
