Recent advances in wireless communications technology and low-power, low-cost CMOS imaging sensors enable a new sensing modality employing ubiquitous distributed video sensing. In many video sensing applications multimedia streams are often required by the base station to provide detailed information of the target spot in the sensor field. Such applications demand a strict throughput requirement for each data stream and expect the underline routing scheme to yield throughput-aware data paths for video data delivery. As a result, data path throughput estimation becomes increasingly important for successful video delivery algorithm designs. In this paper, we propose a data path throughput estimation model for singleton streaming applications, where only one data path is instantiated between source and destination. Coupled with distributed TDMA packet scheduling scheme, this path throughput estimation model can be employed by path formation algorithms to construct data paths from source to destination to yield throughput-aware video delivery. OPNET simulation results indicate that our model is accurate and our proposed TDMA packet scheduling scheme is favorable for video streaming applications.

Smart mobile devices such as camera phones typically will be carried by people all the time. These devices are true "multimedia" devices that acquire, process, transmit and present text, image, video and audio data. However, due to the limitations in hardware and networking, multimedia applications and systems have not been adequately supported on mobile devices. The development of network convergence and multimedia service are driving the management of heterogeneous devices. According to the disadvantages of the existing device management mechanisms, a converged protocol for the management of heterogeneous devices is proposed to facilitate the convergence of service. Following the top-down model, the converged device management protocol (CDMP) is designed with the characteristics of the smallest Meta-Method set, the data synchronization mechanism, and application independence. Different from the existing DM protocols, CDMP can satisfy any management requirements of mobile and fixed devices with strong extensibility of Meta-Method set and common message structure. Then CDMP is validated by illustrating the configuration procedure based on CDMP. Finally, the simulation is implemented to evaluate CDMP performance in terms of message traffic.

As a new networking topology, Wireless Mesh Networks (WMNs) have advantageous properties in terms of robustness, range extension and density, but also have significant potential disadvantages, which determines some classical load-balancing algorithms are not very suitable for WMNs. In this paper, we propose a novel load-balancing algorithm to improve the networks performance. The new scheme, which is called CHLB, guarantees the QoS for different data streams through cross-layer design to accomplish the load balance without bringing heavy extra-load. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm can give the effective load-balancing results and remarkably improves the WMNs performance.

Device-to-device (D2D) communication as an underlaying cellular network empowers user-driven rich multimedia applications and also has proven to be network efficient offloading eNodeB traffic. However, D2D transmitters may cause significant amount of interference to the primary cellular network when radio resources are shared between them. During the downlink (DL) phase, primary cell UE (user equipment) may suffer from interference by the D2D transmitter. On the other hand, the immobile eNodeB is the victim of interference by the D2D transmitter during the uplink (UL) phase when radio resources are allocated randomly. Such interference can be avoided otherwise diminish if radio resource allocated intelligently with the coordination from the eNodeB. In this paper, we formulate the problem of radio resource allocation to the D2D communications as a mixed integer nonlinear programming (MINLP). Such an optimization problem is notoriously hard to solve within fast scheduling period of the Long Term Evolution (LTE) network. We therefore propose an alternative greedy heuristic algorithm that can lessen interference to the primary cellular network utilizing channel gain information. We also perform extensive simulation to prove the efficacy of the proposed algorithm.

In this paper, macroblock (MB) mode prediction in extended spatial scalability (ESS) with error resilience is investigated. We extend the MB mode derivation method originally proposed by our lab to improve the efficiency of inter-layer prediction in ESS [7], to error prone transmission conditions. The performance of our method is evaluated in metrics such as PSNR gain and complexity reduction, which is represented by percentage change in number of MBs for each partition type at the decoder for various tested sequences. Simulation results show that significant complexity reduction is reportedly achieved with average 50% increase in the number of MBs with 16x16 mode in enhancement layer and average PSNR-Y gain of 1.35 dB at the decoder compared to JVT-W030 under testing conditions specified in JVT-V302.
