With 250,000 NTD invested, 6 man power allocated, and 9 month time elapsed, we present BL-Live. The seemingly dumb, senseless BL Hall at National Taiwan University is transformed to an intelligent office building by a 30+ node sensor network. Two everyday services, Elevator Report and Smart Office, are implemented to better utilize the resources of the building and of the building residents. Our experience allows us to re-examine technical issues such as manufacturing cost, form factor, deployment, data communication, and energy efficiency. Many of the lessons we learn are not only surprising but also inspiring, which in turn leads us to think that more deployment experience and experience sharing are critical to the advances and commercialization of sensor networks.

The MultiFlex system is an application-to-platform mapping tool that integrates heterogeneous parallel components - H/W or S/W - into a homogeneous platform programming environment. This leads to higher quality designs through encapsulation and abstraction. Two high-level parallel programming models are supported by the following MultiFlex platform mapping tools: a distributed system object component (DSOC) object-oriented message passing model and a symmetrical multiprocessing (SMP) model using shared memory. We demonstrate the combined use of the MultiFlex multiprocessor mapping tools, supported by high-speed hardware-assisted messaging, context-switching, and dynamic scheduling using the StepNP demonstrator multiprocessor system-on-chip platform, for two representative applications: 1) an Internet traffic management application running at 2.5 Gb/s and 2) an MPEG4 video encoder (VGA resolution, at 30 frames/s). For these applications, a combination of the DSOC and SMP programming models were used in interoperable fashion. After optimization and mapping, processor utilization rates of 85%-91% were demonstrated for the traffic manager. For the MPEG4 decoder, the average processor utilization was 88%.

This paper proposes a cross-layer optimization framework that provides efficient allocation of wireless network resources across multiple types of applications to maximize network capacity and user satisfaction. We define a novel optimization scheme based on the Mean Opinion Score (MOS) as the unifying metric. Our experiments, applied to scenarios where users simultaneously run three types of applications, such as realtime voice, video conferencing and file download, confirm that MOS-based optimization leads to significant improvement in terms of user perceived quality when compared to throughput-based optimization. A large number of high-dimensional index structures suffer from the so called 'dimensional curse' problem, i.e., the retrieval performance becomes increasingly degraded as the dimensionality is increased. To solve this problem, the cell-based filtering scheme has been proposed, but it shows a linear decrease in performance as the dimensionality is increased. In this paper, we propose a parallel high-dimensional index structure using the cell-based filtering for multimedia data so as to cope with the linear decrease in retrieval performance. In addition, we devise data insertion, range query and k-NN query processing algorithms which are suitable for the cluster-based parallel architecture. Finally, we show that our parallel index structure achieves good retrieval performance in proportion to the number of servers in the cluster-based architecture and it outperforms a parallel version of the VA-File when the dimensionality is over 10.

In the past decades, a number of research results have been reported for energy-efficient task scheduling over uniprocessor and multiprocessor environments. While researchers have started the exploring of slack reclaiming for tasks during run time, little work has been done for multiprocessor cases. This paper proposes a set of multiprocessor energy-efficient task scheduling algorithms with different task remapping and slack reclaiming schemes, where tasks have the same arrival time and share a common deadline. Tasks are reassigned to processors dynamically, and the slack time is reclaimed to slow down the execution speeds of the remaining tasks for energy efficiency. Extensive simulations were performed to provide insights. The energy consumption could be reduced up to 29% in the experiments, compared to the previous work.

An emerging challenge to the realization of ubiquitous, mobile telecommunications is not ostensibly based on any underlying transport or network protocol but on the sheer complexity of technology presented to the user. Common scenarios of future mobile telecommunications often involve multiple devices with varied characteristics and rich and diverse multimedia applications delivered over heterogeneous wireless environments. Most users, however, cannot be expected to appreciate these technologies or participate in its configuration. To address this issue, a user-centric system is proposed that aims to hide complexity from the user. Incorporating concepts of the Personal Distributed Environment [1], the proposed system uses a Personal Assistant Agent to interact with, and react to, the environment and a Personal Content Manager to be aware of content types, device capabilities and manage a user's digital content on behalf of the user.

Recently, wireless LAN is achieving remarkable growth, and maturity. On the other hand, by the advance of the Internet, the demand for the multimedia communication services which include video and voice will be expected to grow. Therefore, in the future, the mechanism of QoS guarantee must be realized even in wireless LAN environment. So far, IEEE 802.11e EDCF has been proposed, which is a contention based channel access method to achieve the QoS guarantee in wireless LAN. However, this cannot realize the desired throughput ratio or deterministic target throughput in principle. In this paper, we expand the EDCF to solve such QoS issues and enable more flexible QoS control. Moreover, we show the effectiveness of our proposal by computer simulation. Copyright 2006 ACM.

MANETs are important and integral part of next generation wireless networking. Real time multimedia communication over MANETs is challenging due to reasons like network topology changes, limitations of wireless links and demanding requirements of multimedia. Channel adaptivity is adopting applications to the dynamic and unpredictable network conditions. QoS adaptivity is adopting lower layers to multimedia application requirements. The novel cross layer context exchange approach called ConEx, presented in this paper improves the efficiency of this two-way information exchange. This paper focuses on adaptive multimedia applications over mobile ad hoc networks, which addresses the challenges of multimedia applications. ConEx uses publish-subscribe event notification system for vertical context exchange across layers of the mobile host and horizontal context exchange across the MANET. ConEx architecture and implementation issues are discussed in this paper.
