Rate control is an important issue in streaming applications over wireless network. TFRC is a widely accepted rate control protocol in wired networks, but it has a serious shortcoming that it cannot distinguish the wireless channel error based loss rate from the total packet loss rate measured at streaming client. In this paper, we focus on wireless streaming over 3G network, and propose an amended TCP-friendly rate control protocol TFWSRC which makes use of the characteristic of 3G network to distinguish the congestion based packet loss rate from the total packet loss rate. TFWSRC proposes a convenient method to measure the total end to end packet loss rate without considering the jitter problem. It not only inherit the TCP-friendly features of TFRC and also adopts a flexible increasing strategy of packet sending rate to ensure the presentation quality at streaming client

Localization research has focused on improving the accuracy of pinpointing the physical location of a target. We think that the energy efficiency and the quality of the localization services (QoLS) are equally important properties of localization systems. We refer to the QoLS as the timely supply of the location information to the applications. Energy efficiency and quality are seemingly two contradictive goals in terms of determining the rate of triggering the localization systems to perform the necessary computation and communication. In that, a lower location sampling rate contributes to a lower level of energy consumption but in the meantime compromises the timeliness of acquiring the location information. Opting for energy efficient and quality localization services, we propose a mobility-aware mechanism that adapts the sampling rate to the target mobility. Results from our simulations confirm that the adaptive sampling approach is promising and effective

This paper introduces a novel "HoLiSTiC" framework for visual sensor networks (VisSNs) and studies security issues within this context. The HoLiSTiC paradigm, which encompasses many existing VisSN proposals, effectively exploits heterogeneous wireless sensing and communications for more flexible, practical and scalable visual surveillance. Security aspects of HoLiSTiC are considered by highlighting open research problems. Secure routing issues in unidirectional optical free-space sensor networks that form the foundation of the HoLiSTiC transport network are discussed. In addition, a novel distributed security paradigm based on independent media sharing is presented to demonstrate how the interaction of signal processing, networking, and cryptography can benefit VisSNs.

As the Internet is widely used, high performance networks and systems prompts appearance of various applications and the appearance requests higher capacity resources. Recently, studies on grid are actively conducted to reorganize each computing resource, which used to be scattered for each application requesting these high capacity calculation resources, into a virtual high capacity resource by connecting to networks. The network needed in this grid environment has been progressed along with the WDM-base Lambda network that can build a high-bandwidth network for relatively low cost. This article presents two ways that improve network performance on grid environment. First way is approach to reorganize the existing network into L2/OPN (optical private network) by using Lambda networking to avoid traffic congestion. And second way is manage TCP windows buffer size to present a suitable TCP size for the grid environment

In this paper, we propose a service analysis framework for eliciting key service functionalities and core technologies when various future mobile service scenarios are given. The proposed analysis framework, called scenario based service analysis process (2SAP), consists of 4 sequential analysis steps, a scenario transformation, a scenario decomposition, an analysis of functions for each situation, and an elicitation of service functionalities. We then propose business model creation methodology consisting of four consecutive development processes, service elicitation, elicitation of participants, roles of participants and value distribution using analysis results of 2SAP approach. Finally, we propose three types of next generation mobile business models, direct management model, platform rental model, and brokerage model, based on roles and activities of participants.

One of the key technological challenges to advance our knowledge-based society is the development of mobile multimedia communication systems and networks. With rapid advances in wireless packet networking technology, it is becoming possible to provide mobile users not only with data, voice, but also with video communication services. Many emerging mobile applications require the playback of video on the mobile hosts, and today's wireless networks are getting ready to provide sufficient bandwidth for support of compressed video transmission. With the increase in the bandwidth of wireless channels and the computing power of the mobile devices, it is expected that video service will be offered for wireless networks in the near future. In this paper we are especially interested in the issue of wireless video multicast, in which there may be hundreds and thousands of mobile hosts receiving the same video from one sender. Reliable video distribution over WLANs is still a challenging problem to solve. Transport of video content is very sensitive to bandwidth variability, delay jitter, packet error rates and types of packets in which errors occur. We present VideoMsg an audio-video distribution system over WLANs which provides the best combination of technologies for the transmission of video information to heterogeneous mobile users.

Traditional e-learning scenarios are based on a client/ server architecture and are not primarily designed for mobile scenarios. To offer e-learning in mobile scenarios, difficult technical challenges involving platform heterogeneity, wireless communication protocols, screen resolution and other usability matters must be dealt with. Ultimately, e-learning objects have to be dynamically converted and customized according to the target platform. This applies to multimedia content, as well as to the native format (e.g. XML) in which the content is stored. The "Mobile Delivery Server" (MDS) is our advanced software approach to resolve some of the problems and limitations described above. The MDS introduces a new middle layer service for the technical needs of mobile e-learning scenarios. The MDS also provides compatibility of learning objects with a broad variety of mobile clients and allows the distribution of platform dependent players.

In wireless network environment, different traffic classes exhibit a variety of characteristics and service requirements [4,5,7], such as data rate, maximum tolerable packet error rate and delay bounds. Although IEEE 802.11e [9,10] addresses the QoS issues and classifies the traffic into four prioritized access categories, there is still no guarantee of real-time transmission service due to the lack of an effective coordinating mechanism [11] among contending clients and a satisfactory scheduling method for various delay-sensitive packets from multiple traffic flows. In this work, we propose a nearly complete polling list solution to IEEE 802.11 WLAN by enhancing the original PCF protocol with better demand assignment features. A flexible and fair polling list method among the various time bounds is investigated in the proposed scheme. The performance evaluation based on NS-2 network simulator [12,13] shows that our schemes are well suited for variable bit rate service in real-time multimedia applications.

With this focus, the Internetworking Program at Dalhousie University has established an Advanced Internetworking Laboratory (AIL) research and development space in Atlantic Canada. The major aim of the AIL is to provide a comprehensive platform for collaborative academic-industry research into networking applications development. This paper identifies the key design metrics used in establishing the research laboratory infrastructure. In particular, the architecture of our research centric test bed is presented considering design objectives of all three stakeholders in this project: academics, industry and technology providers

Advanced, large-scale applications targeted for the next generation Internet are motivating advances in scalable and adaptive highspeed networks and middleware. This paper provides a framework and middleware for heterogeneous distributed applications. And also describes how they have been applied successfully in practice to improve the reusability and quality of software system. An application written in one language is capable of playing media files and giving a request to an intermediate server, which is written in another language. The communications between these two different languages are established by converting the requesting application in to intermediate form. Therefore the converted application seems to be same language application as Intermediate Server. Finally the intermediate server, streams the requested media file to the client from the servers group which are under the control of the intermediate server.
