IPTV is highly advocated in recent years. Today, the growth of the residential users makes it possible to broadcast live video content through global Internet to a great population of end users. In this paper, we mainly describe the design and deployment experiences of a peer-to-peer (P2P) based IPTV system called Gridmedia since P2P is universally recognized as a scalable and cost-effective means for group communication. In order to reduce the playback latency at end users as well as offer resilience to high churn rate in peer community, Gridmedia organizes end users into an unstructured overlay while proposes an efficient push-pull streaming mechanism to distribute video segments among partner nodes. To further verify the prototype, on one hand we conduct extensive experiments over PlanetLab to confirm the overlay architecture and streaming mechanism in Gridmedia can greatly reduce the average playback latency as compared to previous works; on the other hand the practical deployment of Gridmedia system over global Internet also demonstrated it could reliably support large number of users without need of network infrastructure. We also discuss, in a practical way, the issues when perfecting a prototype to a publicly released platform and system performance during live broadcasting CCTV Spring Festival Gala 2006.

Various forms of ad-hoc networking are slowly emerging. However, a wider diffusion of ad-hoc networking in everyday life will only be possible if existing common applications are adapted for use in ad-hoc networks. There has been some work on adapting Internet-based applications to function in ad-hoc networks. Yet, in order to make ad-hoc networking even more useful and interesting to people, applications must also be able to connect to the Internet. Many new Internet applications are based on sessions, e.g., instant messaging, VoIP and multimedia communications. The session initiation protocol (SIP) is a popular protocol to manage sessions in IP networks, based on centralized servers, and application-level routing. However, in order to establish SIP sessions between an ad-hoc network and the Internet, some logic must be built in the ad-hoc gateway node to make messages flow correctly to and from the ad-hoc network. In this paper, we present an intelligent SIP gateway that makes it possible to route messages properly between ad-hoc networks, and the Internet, even when the ad-hoc IP addresses are not globally routable

The imminent introduction of the 3GPP IP multimedia Subsystem (IMS) into commercial mobile networks is considered to be a major step towards all-IP based next generation networks. This has immediate consequences both for the migration of the core network as well as the integration of future mobile services and applications. This paper presents an experimental testbed which has been designed as a minimal standard-compliant IMS core network. We discuss major practical requirements and describe our implementation of this "IMS in a bottle" approach. Furthermore, we introduce an IMS native location service enabler based on the IMS presence system and demonstrate that this service can be integrated efficiently into the IMS core environment

For seamless service, mobility should be supported in the NGN. For this, there have been many contributions, such as MIPv6, IP2, ***, IMS. In mobility area, handover latency time is the first parameter to consider. However, above all are not compared up to now. Therefore this paper presents the performance comparison of handover latency times. For this, we use NS-2 simulator. In simulation results, we shown that IP2 has minimum value as compared with other mechanisms about the handover latency time

With the development of network, multimedia will be the main application in next generation network. Voice is one of the most important applications. Recently a kind of P2P-based VoIP software, Skype, has been receiving more and more attention both in academia and industry. Skype claims that it's better than other VoIP software, because of its high call completion rate and superior sound quality. This paper will reveal Skype's technique and have a performance comparison between Skype and MSN Messenger, which uses traditional VoIP protocol. The result indicates that the voice quality of Skype is no better than traditional VoIP software and the great benefit of P2P involved with VoIP is that it can solve NAT and firewall problems.

Mobile Stream Control Transmission Protocol (mSCTP) is recently proposed to support mobility in the transport layer without requiring additional network components. mSCTP provides mobility to all applications that use mSCTP as a transport protocol. However, current mSCTP does not include location management service and can not make connection from a Corresponding Node (CN) to a Mobile Node (MN) without assistance of other mobile protocols. We propose mSCTP proxy which supports making an mSCTP connection from the CN to the MN. Proposed mSCTP proxy performs an address transformation by direct interoperation with generic location management service and forward connection set up messages to the MN. Using the proposed proxy, mSCTP can provide a complete mobility support including a connection setup and maintaining an existing connection.

Internet-based communication is currently in a hype. People utilize Internet services more and more to communicate with each other, e.g., via VoIP or chat. The next step would be to reutilize the same applications to achieve ubiquitous communication, anytime and anywhere, also where network support is not available, such as in ad-hoc networks. Existing Internet protocols must be modified for working in the ad-hoc server-less environment. The session initiation protocol (SIP) is a fundamental element in the Internet for establishing multimedia communication sessions. However, SIP cannot be used in ad-hoc networks, as it relies on the support of SIP servers in the network; e.g, in ad-hoc networks it is not possible to locate SIP users since the assistance of a dedicated SIP server is missing. A solution for this problem is presented in this paper, which describes and evaluates a fully decentralized mechanism for locating SIP users in ad-hoc networks

Provisioning multimedia streaming services to mobile users in next generation wireless networks is considered critical to the successful deployment of such networks. Streaming traffic is characterized by the need of relatively high data transmission rates, and the need to limit the wireless network delays during transmission. Such factors contribute to the importance of the design and use of scheduling mechanisms that work at the streaming connection level to manage network resources. In this paper, we consider the problem of designing schedulers that aim at maximizing the achieved throughput subject to constraints on the maximum acceptable delay that can be tolerated by each traffic stream. We propose an adaptive scheduling framework for the non-preemptive delivery of traffic streams in cellular networks where a fixed number of channels are allocated to streaming services. The obtained simulation results indicate the competitiveness of the proposed design when used online to control traffic, and the usefulness of the underlying algorithms when used offline to analyze traffic traces

Network operators are now on a journey towards a next generation network (NGN) built on horizontal "planes", moving away from traditional vertical structure networks for fixed voice and data communication networks. IP multimedia subsystem (IMS) is a part of wider network transformation to next generation (NG) networks. The IMS core network has a common IP based transport plane and a common signalling or control plane, and it can be accessed by different access networks. IMS provides a control layer based on an end-to-end based session initiation protocol (SIP) that can control a session and remain agnostic of the access network. This innovation in the telecom industry where more intelligence is moving to the edge, can be closely linked to another innovation in the IT industry, where applications are being rendered as re-usable components, or services as we may refer to them. Such components, when made available on the Web are referred to as Web services. IBM's service enablement solution in the NGN space is based on three strategic tenets. First of all, it makes use of the common IP transport plane and the Web services realization mechanism as a backbone for composite services within a single session. This would help network operators to generate revenue in a converged telecom network. Secondly, it uses Web services to automate the entire lifecycle of a service. This leads to automation of the service delivery platform (SDP), which in turn allows third party application providers to deploy services by using the services exposed by network provider. Finally, as premium composite services are deployed to the end user, he/she would have a higher quality of experience (QoE). IMS provides a per-subscriber control of QoS as part of QoE. As the subscriber uses various composite services, the IMS ability to control QoE/QoS, becomes a huge differentiator for IMS over just uncontrolled access over the Internet. We examine the impact of physical layer rate adaptation mechanisms on the performance of real applications over 802.11 wireless links in diverse channel environments. Our evaluations are based on a testbed with real wireless devices equipped with commodity 802.11 hardware and a hardware channel emulator. We consider two different and well-known 802.11 rate adaptation mechanisms (Onoe and SampleRate) and study their performance under several realistic workloads, including multimedia streaming and web browsing. We observe that the application performance with different rate adaptation mechanisms is dependent on the specific tradeoffs these mechanisms make at the link layer in an application-oblivious manner between improving throughput and limiting frame loss. More importantly, their relative performance for a given workload is quite sensitive to the channel quality and environment. These observations highlight the importance of choosing the rate selection strategy adaptively in an application and channel aware manner.
