An ideal ubiquitous computing environment can be a network system of such intelligent and human-friendly robots that never appear in front of humans except when needed. In this paper the distributed intelligent robot network (DIRN) is proposed as one kind of wireless sensor and actor networks (WSAN) consisting of one brain node and numerous sensor and actor nodes with human-friendly interfaces. In order to realize well-coordinated DIRNs, it is very important to develop a systematically computable knowledge representation language universal for any kind of device as well as efficient networking technologies. As a candidate for this purpose, the multimedia description language L-md was evaluated by applying it to simulation of DIRN-world interaction.

Despite the great potential demonstrated by the multimedia-rich data in various business applications, none of the prior research has addressed the design of high-quality access to the multimedia content in heterogeneous wireless networking environment. In this research, we have presented a partial pre-retrieval and buffering scheme to improve various quality of service (QoS) parameters for multimedia content for in such context. Specifically it addresses the three important QoS parameters namely delay, delay variation, and information loss that directly impact the mobile user's quality of experience indicators. Here we have also presented the analysis of the buffering requirements and the related issues for high-quality access to the multimedia content in such environment. Results of this research have potential to improve the understanding of these multimedia QoS parameters for ubiquitous wireless infrastructures. Copyright 2005 ACM.

Existing works on MIMO systems have been restricted to either uncorrelated frequency-selective channels or correlated non frequency-selective channels. Practical MIMO systems however, suffers from the effects of frequency selectivity and channel correlation due to the high transmission rate and proximity of the transmit antennas. This paper presents a low complexity adaptive MIMO-OFDM system. The system exploits the time, frequency and spatial dimensions to provide high data rate and robust signal transmission in frequency selective channels with varying correlation levels. Compared to existing MIMO-OFDM systems, the proposed system provides up to 2-3 dB gains under low channel correlations and more than 5 dB gains in highly correlated channel.

Modem mobile processors offer dynamic voltage and frequency scaling, which can be used to reduce the energy requirements of embedded and real-time applications by exploiting idle CPU resources, while still maintaining all applications' real-time characteristics. However, accurate predictions of task run-times are key to computing the frequencies and voltages that ensure that all tasks' real-time constraints are met. Past work has used feedback-based approaches, where applications' past CPU utilizations are used to predict future CPU requirements. Inaccurate predictions in these approaches can lead to missed deadlines, less than expected energy savings, or large overheads due to frequent voltage and frequency changes. Previous solutions ignore other 'indicators' of future CPU requirements, such as the frequency of I/O operations, memory accesses, or interrupts. This paper addresses this shortcoming for memory-intensive applications, where measured task run-times and cache miss rates are used as feedback for accurate run-time predictions. Cache miss rates indicate the frequency of memory accesses and enable us to derive the latencies introduced by these operations. The results shown in this paper indicate improvements in the number of deadlines met and the amount of energy saved.

In this paper, we propose a novel loopback approach in a two-level streaming architecture to exploit collaborative client/proxy buffers for improving the quality and efficiency of large-scale streaming applications. At the upper level we use an overlay to deliver video from a central server to proxy servers, at the lower level a proxy server delivers video with the help of collaborative caches. In particular,a proxy server and its clients in a local domain cache different portions of a video and form delivery loops. In each loop, a single video stream originates at the proxy, passes through a number of clients, and is passed back to the proxy. As a result, with limited bandwidth and storage space contributed by collaborative clients, we are able to significantly reduce the requirements of network bandwidth, I/O bandwidth, and cache space at a proxy. Furthermore, we develop local repair schemes to address the client failure issues for enhancing server quality and eliminating most repairing load at servers. For popular videos, our local repair schemes are able to handle most of single-client failures without service disruption and retransmissions from a central server. Our analysis and simulations have shown the efficacy of loopback in various settings.

Next generation wireless networks are expected to support multi-class variable bandwidth realtime multimedia applications. High user mobility and inherent instability of wireless channels makes quality of service (QoS) provisioning a challenging issue in wireless networks. In this paper, we propose a novel resource management scheme for QoS provisioning in wireless networks for multimedia calls. We improve handoff call dropping probabilities and reduce bandwidth fluctuations a call suffers by making the call time adaptable to bandwidth changes. Simulation results show that our scheme maintains low handoff call dropping probabilities and significantly reduces bandwidth variations at the end hosts.

This paper presents an Embedded Video Surveillance System for vehicle over WLAN and CDMA1X First, it constructs high speed automobile communication environment by fusing CDMA1X and WLAN wireless network;In order to fit the bandwidths sharply variety of wireless channel, adaptive video compression algorithms based MPEG4 is utilized to encode the high quality video. Moreover, unique transmission mechanism using media server and media gateway is presented, which can support large scale concurrent users up to 1000. This transmission mechanism uses the buffer on media server to smooth the video transport in wireless channel. It uses the floor surface and the human body as an Ethernet-cable, and weak electric fields as the transmission media. Portable and wearable devices can connect to the network while the user stands or walks on the floor;connection speed is 10Mbps. Home and office appliances can also access the network if they are just put on the floor. CarpetLAN also provides an indoor positioning function, which is urgently needed for realizing "ubiquitous" communication.
